Not so, firing a typical english longbow at max elevation of 45 degrees (80-120Lb pull over 29-32 inches) using a flight arrow, ranges of up to 400 yards were attainable. A well trained archer would be expected to get at least 2 more arrows in the air at max range before the first one hit the target.
This was only done to lower the morale of the enemy because damage at this range would have been minimal and arrows cost money as we all know /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif.
