...when the game started and everyone was so poor we actually had to kill animals and when they died some had furs (which were so numerous that they were either left in the corpse or thrown away)? And people actually picked regs up from the ground to use or sell?....

...

I remember...

- Buying bolts of cloth, making clothing, selling the clothing (at a profit), then selling the bolt back at half the price originally bought, but with only 5 or so yards of cloth left.

- You only got the menu to make something with a tool if you succeeded the skill check

- That small house was sacred and a tower was out of reach for a single player.

- Nested bags of loot on monsters (orcs could have up to 10 bags, the last one always had gold, bread, and possibly a magic item)... Sometimes the bags would have No Draw tiles.

- Healing healed 6 points max and was bugged to not work again for a LONG time.

- "Skill walls"... Some skills would NOT pass a certain point.

- Talking while hidden (something I'll always miss)

- ~ used to show up blank thus allowing for "blank casting". I found it useful at the bank for banking purposes (especially combined with talking while hidden)

- Interactive NPCs and NPC spam wanting you to kill other NPCs (also red and blue named NPCs running the town shops and they weren't invulnerable)

- Thieves could play the guard lines by stealing out of town, then running in if you attacked them to call the guards on YOU

- Super Llamas

Just a small list /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

Do you remember entering Britannia for the first time with 100gp, three of each reg, an empty spellbook, candle and a dagger? I didn't pass ANYTHING without picking it up. I figured I could sell it somewhere!

Do you remember asking an NPC the weather and they told you?

Do you remember banking and having someone steal something right out of your pack?

Do you remember when escorting was an incredible money maker and you could escort unlimited escorts at once (now it's just a waste of time, sadly)?

Do you remember putting that last scroll in your spellbook to make 64 spells? I do - time, place and where I got the scroll.

Do you remember tents?

Thank you UO for the memories...

Or when you would finally gain a few tenths in a desired skill, only to have it drop back down because some jerk would light a fire at bank "you have gained .1 in camping" Damn learn by watching....

Or better yet, when you could only see your skills in full points(not tenths), and you had no idea when you were gaining, untill you gained a full points worth?

I also remember that I died from snake bite 1/2 hour into the game while picking up regs just outside of the guard zone in Moonglow. I ran to the bank as fast as I could "help......HEEEEEELP!!!!!" OOOooooooooooooo.......

I haven't seen a snake around Moonglow in a looong, long time.

I remember the first time I played an alchemist. Didn't have the healing skill and couldn't cast anything. Collecting regs wasn't enough to make heal potions, and after killing one cow I could just about make enough money for one heal potion to kill another cow.......that was providing someone hadn't bought a few ginseng and pushed the price up! So it went on for 2 days until I could cast a lesser heal.

Also, remember the gully between the mountains west of Brit? That was the most likely place to find a PK as a newbie on Europa!

I was a lumberjacker and bowcrafter on my archer/swords/fencer/wrestling/magery hehe noobie.

I remember who elated I Was when I sold a bow 34-36 instead of 28-33. I don't think I Ever got to make heavy x-bows. I gave up crafting in favor of becoming a pvp'er and changed my template completly. (Course back then 7xGM was non-existent and people didn't even know there was a cap, or what it was)

I used to make good money hiding in the Fire Elemental room in Deceit due to that. Of course, someone would usually get "smart", reveal me and try to attack me.

Anyone remember the last time the game was actually fun? I think it was sometime before Feb. 2003...

Remember when a [young] player was actually a new player to game instead of a vet with a new account?

Remember trying to apply DP poison to a weapon and accidently drinking the poison instead? (I do/php-bin/shared/images/icons/laugh.gif)

Remember sailing and not running into a parked boat every few tiles?

Remember the first time you died while alone on your boat and the panic about how you get rezzed and back to your corpse?

Remember actually having to stand there and loot your corpse after you died?

Remember that feeling of awe the first time you popped into game with your very first character, for the very first time?

Do you remember when Moonglow was the place to be to train up newbie skills? (There were always several players in the areas outside the fence working a weapon or magery. Now it's deserted)

Remember killing your very first mongbat or great hart and feeling a huge sense of accomplishment?

I remember being back in Moonglow on my 3rd day. I went out on a hunt with my new best friend and we both had no idea how to heal. So after we'd killed something, we'd wait for about 15 mins for our health to regenerate before moving on :p

Remember how you could drink pots with bows equipped? /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif Too bad they cgabged that.

Remember how you bought your first house? I sure do, they didn't cost 43k thats for sure. I went to despise every day killing red mage NPC's, looting thieir gold and selling their robes to the provisioners at 35 gold a pop. Bought my first house that way, and placed it whereever I wanted to place it.

Placed my first house on fire island because my original guild had all the houses on it.

Anyone remember the bone magi room in Deciet? The one that took you guys to Illustrious? There would be 50 people in the room all ebolting at once hoping for kill shot and the fame...Soon as you hit 4th level fame, you joined an Order/Chaos guild and people looked at you like..omg, it's a ninja! And if you lost 4th level fame, you were kicked out of O/C and if you had a shield on you exploded? Hehe...

Remember the downside of 50 people camped in that room? A gate would open and you knew damn well it was a balron coming through it. and it would smoke half the people there before it was killed.

Yep, the real fun of uo /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

The very first thing that killed me in game was a cat. My First charactor was on Pacific and I had pre order UO so I had I was online the first day that UO was released out of beta. I can remember spending my days South West of Trinsic with a group of ten trying to kill one orc mage. We would die, run to the healer and grab what ever we could find to fight with. We all ended up with each others stuff before the fight was over. The weapon of choice back in those days was NPC sold Viking sword. The only players that had mages where the beta players. The rest of us would spend a week of playing every nite in a group saving up enough money to buy our first NPC viking sword. After a couple weeks we moved to minoc and started our smiths so we could make the stuff we needed. Monster where just to tuff to kill with Newbee weapons.

I remember:

Being able to gate monsters into town... heh
being able to trap monsters behind crates in a house, or use flour bags to create a wall that monsters couldn't pass...
being able to take my main backpack off and drop it on the ground...
casting earthquake in town
having to put your guild abbr in your name (TUPAC NWA!)
dragons that would talk to you... (designers)
Using the back of moonglow bank because the front was too crowded...
when bedrolls were useful
being excited about FINALLY being able to get into Wind!
The "You were naughty this year!" x-mas present bag with coal, switches and a note! (I found a full one of these and a no draw tile in my bank the other day!)
Sharing houses with people because no one could afford to buy their own.
Summoning a LOT of fire elementals at once.
The ABYSS Shard...
Barneys vs Freds at Britain graveyard 10 minutes before server down

I remember:

When you finally got a boat it was the coolest thing ever..
Getting whacked by DP halberds
Actually running away from a horde of mongbats
When camping, cooking and hiding were the skills to have.
When GMs actually showed up and helped you instead of getting a damned auto response msg.
Plus when GMs would control the monster AI and chase you all over fire dungeon. :<

I am so glad I posted this..I have tears from laughing so much!

...when you knew the exact time (down to the minute, or even second) that all the tanners would spawn 1000 hides and you would camp there to buy them all then sew bustiers and sell them to all the BS NPC's?

eye the crowd of other players camped out waiting to say "vendor buy"
vendor buy (close window)
vendor buy (close window)
vendor buy (close window)
vendor buy (freak out because you actually see all the hides and then almost panic as you hold down the + button until you buy them all)
realize you are trying to hold 1000 hides and don't have a pack animal.
ICQ guild member ("HELP!! - I forgot the pack horse!")

memories.....we actualy bought a castle deed doing this. And we actually placed one near some water. Then we blocked off access to our front door with tents...

remember when wrong was a good place to hunt ? if you didnt mind getting ocasianally pk'd /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

if you went to shame you would know to recall at 5k becuse you would get pk's before you hit 8k /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

GM armor and wep was awsome for killing earthys in shame.

any fighter who wanted to protect himself in a dungion carried a few traped pouches and a GP katana or kryss.

magery was a huge accomplishment (if you didnt use any or know any bugs) becuse of its cost !! now its harder and more expensive to gm a dexer..

you could train healing skill off curing yourself till about 80

on chessy there used to be reds all over brit, one time i remember going east of brit along the watter where there was a female pk that took out a group of like 8 including myself that went to rid the forest of her evil !! we died, but it was fun, firefeild was what toasted most of us /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

you could place a house if you where able to make the gold to place one (there was open housing spots in fel long before tram)

the lost lands where best place to hunt and not get pk'd, aslong as you didnt stay near DEL..

pk's used to like using deamons to solo pk (npc fort between brit and yew) and did a good job.

people used to run from brit forge thrue graveyard to the mountain pass to mine ingots and try to fun back to forge before getting pk'd

the rocks outside brit cematery and near the beach east of east bank where safest places to mine.

people collected raw meat from aniimal kills just for an extra 6GP

I remember the time before they even had that tutorial! It certainly was not there when we started the first 2 accounts. We only saw it when we started new characters on a third account. However I do remember the lag on dial up. We played for 3 years on 22.6 conn on a P2 233 with 32G Ram, and playing Europa from southern Mississippi.

I remember server wars lasting up to 2 1/2 hours, and blue robed counselors standing atop the crypts at Brit cemetary, pointing out players to the pks standing with them. The only thing that saved me was my high hiding, gained from hiding at the banks due to the heavy thief population on Europa.

I remember people holding hostage the entire sheep population on Moonglow (sometimes hundreds), in their little houses. The wool would respawn every 2 1/2 hours, and they would log in, shear, log out. The only way to get any wool on Moonglow was to find a willing mage to Meteor Storm the house.

Do you remember you used to get a message saying "there is black pearl to the east" or "nightshade to the west" and the pk's who put reagents on the ground to attract unsuspecting newbies close to their house so they could be killed from the comfort of home? Do you remember when the mages who macroed unattended in town casting water elementals or other spells were undisturbed by gm's? When there was only iron ore and no others? When you could never run out of arrows in the middle of a fight... as long as you kept shooting arrows would magically fly from your bow even if you had none? When you could trap something in crates and fight it to gain skill (and no one considered it an exploit). When you could outrun an arrow or fireball for a while but they would chase you around like a heat seeking missle? I had a friend that ran from rat valley to Yew with a heat seeking ebolt chasing him the whole way. Do you remember Rat valley where you went as a newbie to fight pk's or pk?

I remember the first critter I died to was a chicken. =P I wiff'ed too much and that bandy barely helped and that carnivorous chicken had me for dinner! Died to pigs too, cows, harts and OMG great harts/bulls sooooooo pwned me!

I remember when I was first brought to the wall... it was amazing and I was the happiest person to pick up the armor pieces dropped by the bone knights and selling them. The gold per piece was godly to me and I was astonished that critters dropped more than 30 pieces of gold (all I was killing was lizardmen and an occasional ogre).

I miss the wall the most... it was so much fun just chatting and daring each other to take on the PE below.

OMG! LOL

I was psychologically scarred from my experience in that tutorial, lol I should have sued for mental anguish /php-bin/shared/images/icons/laugh.gif

It was in it's infancy stage, and was broken at some point. I had no clue what I was doing in there, and I got to some point where you had to kill some monsters (can't recall what), but you had to kill them before advancing.

Well you couldn't advance for some reason, and they kept spawning and spawning and spawning. Me and some other poor player spent 3 days there trying to get out. I was frustrated to tears. My b/f was trying to explain to me how to use the "Help" option, only I didn't have the options he was telling me to use. Neither did the guy I was stuck there with.

I can't remember how we got out of there. I think my b/f finally paged a GM for me to tell him that we were stuck there. After getting through the tutorial, I landed up dumped in Haven. The book said to watch for "Murderers". I was totally freaked. It was a horrible beginning to this game.

I hope they don't have the stupid tutorial walk through anymore, but if they do, I sure hope they fixed it!!!

Great thread! It brings tears to my eyes! Things I remember :

- Hoards of summoned elementals roaming around the bank scaring off the newbies (like me) who thought they were real monsters...

- The fist day Seige opened and the shard was filled with newbies. I remember outside skara about 15 of us trying repeatedly to deal with a few orcs including an orc mage that continually roasted us. Of course after we all got going they wiped it and we had to start over..

- The Abyss shard

- The old test center with it's testing community and periodic wipes.

- When UOA was considered a huge exploit.

- The days before the "exceptional" tag on GM armor and the old crafting menus four menus deep as well as the smithing "delay" of having your hammer swing a bunch of times to bang out one piece of armor.

- When houses had no lockdowns or decay and you could stack full bags and chests to the roof on every tile.. of course if you let the wrong person in anything was fair game.

- Gaining archery by swatting things with a bow and not having any arrows.

- Training skills for hours and hours and hours sitting in your house.

- When provoking anything was a criminal act.. bards back then were a very rare soul.

- Seeing those rare robed counsellors and seers and being able to talk to them.

and so many others I'm sure I'll remember after I hit the submit button!

-P.E.

oh yes.. I knew I'd forget a couple..

- The days before stat lock and skill locks when skills would decay if you didn't use them.

- The days before the evaluate intelligence and meditation skills existed.. pure mages back then... naaa Tank mage!

I remember the very first char i made, i only created with 8 str....... i couldnt even hold a hatchet to chop trees to gain str! so I deleted her and made my bronwyn. (who i still play today, 6 yrs later!)

Chopping trees......... chopping trees....... chopping trees... For str and gold. and the excitement of creating a decent bow!

Taking revenge out on a grizzly bear , who was red and killed me. I worked for 3 days to kill that dam bear..... then i proudly displayed his fur on my house floor.

Forgetting and carrying yoru house rune AND the key on you..... getting pked and loosing yoru house.

making copies of yoru enemies house keys... and passing them out to everyone you saw.....

spying on people when you were a ghost..... ohhhhhh good times those!!

being terrified to leave town.

getting lost on Occlo island!!

Not being able to GET to occlo, because there werent any mages who could gate, and you had no money for a boat....

thinking u had to drop the rune on the ground before you could recall..... fizzling for an hour before casting it..... and loosing your precious rune.

Real girls were few and far between..... and we all looked like guys because female armor had hardly ANY AR

Server and newbie wars!

sitting with a guildmate,, in the same spot for hours on end gaining skill

paralyzing dragons and killing them in 2 seconds.

using blade spirits to gain parry and healing

Gming archery in 3 days with a bear boxed up in yoru house.

your heart stopping if you heard a lich laugh... and later being brave enough to hit the lich lord room in deceit, casting EV on the floor above it and reaping in the fame.... and fighting off the theives.

fighting in the harpy room with yoru guildmates,,,,,, making a box of crates around you so you didnt die instantly to 30 harpies. Then you make 3k after 2 hours and are extatic!

When 10k was unheard of to have

Our first guildhouse was a tent..... and it had trees in the middle of it.

Playing on a pc133 with a 14 con

hiding outside of shame entrance..... hoping to find some pks to kill... and you got creamed anyways.

fighting pks in the penn (on baja)

thats all i can think of now:) god i miss the old days.

I remember being able to loot peoples houses. You would cast on yourself until you had very little energy and then apply a bandage before dealing the final deadly spell, you then walked through the house door (all doors used to be locked because items couldn't be locked down in houses), and once through the door hopefully the bandage would kick in and ress you inside the house. You could loot everything that you could carry, or the items with the greatest value.
