Another point re Unholy Bones, the amount of chops required to destroy them varies, and relates to the the strength of the monster that'll spawn.

You can actually cut them up from across the room.....
Ooooh, didn't know that... And here was me running in close to hack 'em up!

Powergaming a newbie on a new shard
Was typing it halfway for another thread, but closed the wrong window nd lost it...so here goes my second attempt.

Newbie quests in Haven are a very good source of starting skills and blessed equipment eg undead slayer spellbook, blades for cutting corpses, lrc wizard hat. Blessed equipment remain with you even when you die.

1) Use KR to crate a char, it allows you to pick 4 skills and 120 skill points, plus the dark knight quest. The 2D client only allows you 3 skills and 100 points.

2) For the first char, you will want a scribe mage to make money/mark runes/make runebooks/scribe scrolls. You also want to start off with skills at 49 instead of 50 to take advantage of the newbie quests. The NPCs woun't offer to apprentice you if you already have 50 points in the skill they teach.

3) I like to create a character with 49 scribing, 49 necro (to get the initial necrobook/regs), minimal magery (to get the initial spellbook/reg), any remaining points into chiv (spellbook). Use an elf with maxed-out INT.

4) First thing when you emerge in New Haven, buy a packy. You need it to carry the gold you will be making. Next, find and escort your first NPC. Put whatever you don't need in your bank, and all gold/regs/blank scrolls/scribe pen on you.

5) Accept the focus trainer's quest (she's just next to the bank). Just double click her, read through the instructions on how/where to train and accept her quest. Additional note on the "where" - A gong sounds when you enter an enhanced skill gain area that you are eligible for. Also, an icon will show in the buff/debuff list (the one you get when you click the blue button in your character status gump)

6) Make your way to the mage shop up north. Buy out all the blank scrolls and nightshade from the 4 mage vendors there. Remember to buy 1 nightshade for each blank scroll. Don't spend all your gold on blank scrolls, only to find that you have no money to buy nightshade. Accept apprentice quests from both the meditation (3rd floor)and inscription trainers (2nd floor).

7) Stay on the second floor library room where the inscription trainer is in, and start scribing poison scrolls. That 1 point in magery that you started with, gave you a pouch with 30 of each reg, and a spellbook with 12 spells, including a spell called poison. Poison is one of the cheapest spell to cast/scribe. You should hit 50 inscription in a few tries (2 tries if extremely lucky). Double click the inscription trainer to collect your Hallowed spellbook. This book has 1st-5th spell circles all filled and is an undead slayer to boot.

8) You can now do the necro quest or continue scribing until you hit 50 med or 50 focus or the shop keeper runs out of blank scrolls. The latter should happen first. But rememember to collect your rewards from the respective trainers once you hit 50 med (lrc wizard hat) or 50 focus (mana regen bracelet).

9) Once you feel like taking a break (eg shop keeper ran out of scrolls, waiting for mana regen, it's getting old, you've earned your first 10k of gold), you can work on getting a full necro book. Go to the necromancer building east of the mage shop. Accept the necromancy quest.

10) Head out east to the old Haven ruins. You will hear the gong to signify that you are in the right area. The undead here will not aggro you. Equip your undead slayer spell book, then use the necro spell "Pain Spike" to kill the undead. Zombies are the weakest, Skeletons are a bit stronger, Spellbinders are a bit stronger than skeletons because they cast curses. Should take you no time to get from 49 necro to 50 . Now go back to the necro trainer and collect your full necro book.

11) Now you can continue scribing to make more money, train scribing higher level spells, work on the Magery, Resist, Hiding/Stealth/Ninjitsu apprentice quests, or go loot LRC, +skill, resist items from public corpses at popular hunting spots. Once you can cast mark, you can mark runebooks for your other characters and start creating a warrior or even crafter.

Holding a Mage Weapon causes your Magery skill to drop by the displayed amount, the greatest amount of which is -29. Wands (which are easily found in bandit/gypsy chests) tend to have the MW property in addition to Spell Channeling.
Great thread. One small correction: the greatest Mage Weapon is -30 not -29. I have a repeating crossbow that has -30, so I've seen it first hand. The -30 must be very rare though, because that is only one I've ever seen, and my neph who played a couple years longer than me had not seen one until I found mine.

when training a new Skill on a char i allways remove all other skills i do not need to a SS you get much faster GGS gains that way.

I allways grow plants inside a backpack of a char; never locked in a house. So if i decide over a 4 day weekend not to water my plants, they don't all die because the char wasnt logged in, they dont advance a stage.

I also save medable MR 2 junk Armor pices, they make great scribe suits

if you want to move heavy Boxes inside your house (like from the first Floor to the 4th Floor) Lock them donw on the front steps and then customize your house.

They will go into the moving Crate.

Since you can get your moving crate anywhere in the house you just need to claim it on the Floor you now want the boxes and take them out of the crate
if your house has teleporters, you can also leapfrog the heavy item so it's on the ground next to the teleporter for the floor you want to move it to. hold down control/shift to bring up the item tags of everything around you & right click to remove the items tags for everything except your heavy item. step onto the teleporter and in the 1 second delay before you *poof* to the next floor, grab the item tag of your heavy item (while still holding down control/shift). that will allow you to teleport with the heavy item even if it's waaaaay heavier than you can carry. then drop it on the floor when you arrive and leapfrog it to the desired location.
i just discovered this by accident a few weeks ago. you have to be fast and it takes a few tries sometimes to grab the item tag before you teleport to a different floor, but sometimes it's easier than going into customization mode, especially if you have a lot of elven items that you'd have to unlock b4 customization :)
just make sure your house is either private, OR use the detect hidden skill first to make sure no one is lurking in your house.

RE: Harlequin's advice on Recall scrolls...
Every time an NPC mage respawns as a result of something that causes a vendor reset, it will sell spell scrolls either of 1st circle only, 1st & 2nd circle, 1st-3rd circle, or 1st-4th circle spells. This is totally at random. Just because one can buy recall spells off an NPC mage in a given town currently, does not mean that the mage will still be there, selling them, after a server publish or an event that affects NPCs cycles in replacements(berserkers killing NPCs in Vesper, or the shadowlord corruption of towns, etc.)
Basara and Harlequin - I find that 99% of the time, one of the 3 Umbra Necromancers will have recall spells for sale. There's only been one time I can remember that none of the 3 had any in stock, and in that situation I was able to buy them from a New Haven mage. I find New Haven mages usually don't have recall spells for sale.

Security Question:

What is the Account Security Challenge Question?

In order to add an extra layer of password security, new accounts are required to choose a security challenge question and answer. However, existing accounts can also add this feature, and we strongly recommend that all our players do so.

To add a security challenge question to your account, please do the following:

1. Visit the Account Management page.
2. Select Create Account.
3. Select Already have a member account and log in using your EA member account name.

Note: This may be different than your UO account name–in particular, older accounts may follow the pattern "uo_youruoaccountname." If, by adding the uo_ characters, your account name becomes more than 16 characters, this feature will not work. Please click the E-mail Us link to give us the complete information about your account, and a support representative will assist you.
4. The next screen should give you the option to select a security question. Follow all prompts to create a security challenge question and answer. Type carefully and choose an answer that only you would know.
5. Click OK. The security question will be applied to your account.

This security question will be used whenever someone requests a password for that account. If you have forgotten your security question answer, please click the E-mail Us link, and submit a request to have your answer reset. We strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of this feature.

Be careful, or at least very fast, when testing newbie items by trying to lock them down in your house. Newbie items decay very, very fast, much faster than normal items. In fact, I think at one time they decayed in around 90 seconds. Just be prepared to grab it as soon as you see the message that it can't be locked down.

If you're a newbie character and your armour doesn't have the resists that it could, locked boxes that you find in shops hold traps that can kill you, and most locked chests you find out in the wilderness (dungeon chests, chests that spawn with brigand camps, etc.) will kill you. The most damage a character of mine has ever recieved was when I was quite new, had all-40s resist and suffered 130HP damage from a gypsy treasure chest - that's an instant kill for several templates.

If you can cast magic, remember that the Magic Untrap spell pretty much never works. Your best bet is to stand back several tiles - make sure you keep a safe distance - and cast Telekinesis on the box or chest repeatedly (I'm hitting a bit of a mental block here; I know this works with shop boxes and I could swear it works with wilderness chests) until it no longer creates an effect. Most boxes in shops have three traps - a poison spell, a dart and an explosion - so you usually only have to cast Telekinesis three times, although I've seen a few with only one spell or with four - keep casting until you no longer get the "You set off a trap!" message.

Also, when stealing from chests in town, there are certain items, like the hanging lanterns you'll find in most inns and the skeletons found in chests in Wind, that are too heavy for thieves to steal, so don't waste your time. A rule of thumb is that your stealing skill divided by ten equals the weight, in stones, of the heaviest object you have a chance of taking. So if you only have a stealing skill of thirty, trying to take the forged metal from the blacksmith will get you guardwhacked repeatedly.

If you ever die behind a building and can't get to your corpse, and it looks like it's inside the building when you know you died outside, this is a glitch. It's still outside, even if you can see it on the floor inside. Don't bother trying to remove barrels or anything to get to it, because this'll just be a waste of time - use circle of transparency. (I know this seems like a real no-brainer, but in my "youth" I lost a corpse because it appeared to be trapped behind a dozen barrels in the corner; I dug through all the barrels only to find that I couldn't get to it because it was still technically outside.)

I think it varies wildly by shard, and how/when the vendors were reset. After a vendor reset, sometimes I'll find a dozen mage NPCs with level 4 scrolls - other times I have to go through nearly every city in trammel, to find just one selling them.

How do you get a skill to be on your screen at all times? Similar to how you can with a spell by dragging it from the book to the main area. I've seen screenshots, but never figured out how to do it.

You open the skill window, find the skill you want to dump to the window (this is usually only "usable" skills that have the little blue gem beside them.)

Click and hold on the name of the skill, then move to the main window and it should put the skill use button there. This is the 2d client, KR you would use the hotbars usually.

I will try to post a screen shot when I run into it. My places are not the most organized and did some moving recently, so you can only imagine. I got it probably 12-18 months ago from an idoc, so no telling when the original owner got it. Someone enhanced it with frostwood, so they didn't think of it as particularly rare it seems. I've never seen any others tho.

Vendors

For those that only have one account and want to stock vendors with gold, grab a Bulk order book with a single BOD. Place the bod inside, price it with the amount of gold you would like to transfer on to your vendor. Once priced, place the book on the vendor and hit escape (making the book not for sale).

You can then purchase the bulk order deed from your own vendor.

This is the most effective way to transfer gold from your bank account straight to your vendor.

Saying 'Balance' to a banker NPC tells you how much cash is in your bank, but does not include checks - use a house placement tool, and when you pick a design the real total you have in the bank (cash and checks) is shown as the 'bank balance' available to build the house.

Here is a picture of the repeating crossbow -30 mage weapon:
I would consider that exceedingly rare. I changed the tip to reflect that -29 isn't the largest magery deficit, but worded it so that people would expect it to be the best they could do for training purposes.

BTW I sell -29 magery wands on my scribe vendor for mage training, and it is tough to find those suckers. I seem to do best with low level treasure chests, but just doing a couple runs of dungeon chests and I won't find one hardly ever. It's possible the spawn is weighted, but then again when the RNG can spawn anything between -21 and -29, it may just be my bad luck. ;)

For sneaky characters

1) For safe banking in Fel, hide yourself and use the banker's context menu to access your bank without revealing yourself

2) 80 stealth is enough to always succeed in stealth attempts if you are wearing med-able armour

3) Once you hide, you can immediately walk to start stealthing, no need to wait for the skill timer or double click the sneak skill

4) Stealthing checks both your stealth and hiding skills, and consequently, gives you skill gain to both. On the flip side, you will be revealed if you fail either one of the checks

5) If you have ninjitsu, 50 ninjitsu will give you the ability to use smoke/eggbombs. However, eggbombs are much cheaper to make.

6) Assign one of your UOA marcos to use eggbombs and trigger it whenever you are in danger. I use my mouse wheel button, in case people do not know, the mouse wheel can be clicked like a button

7) If you attempt to hide while too near a mob that has aggro'd you, you will get the normal "you can't hide right now" message. Unfortunately, if you try to use the eggebomb now, it will tell you that "you must wait to use another skill". Always use eggbombs first, don't try to save on them. A 50 gp eggbomb will potentially save you thousands of insurance money

8) Also use invisibility in conjunction with hiding in the presence of mobs that can cast reveal. When you cast invis, it will break aggro. Spell casting monsters will attempt to cast reveal once at the tile where you invised yourself. If you can't or are too slow to move out of the reveal range, just hit your hide / eggbomb macro when you get revealed. As long as you did it before you were re-aggro'd by the spellcasting monsters, they will not recast reveal

9) To add on to the invis/hide tactic, just opening corpses to see what it contains does not reveal you unless it belongs to a player. So you can check out what's in a corpse and identify all the loot you want first, then make preparations/hover your mouse cursor on the chosen loot and quickly grab them all in 1 go to minimize revealing your presence

10) Using the above trick, I have looted tons of threads/plane swords/shields/paragon chests/gold during the Moonglow invasion by following berserker daemons as they kill other mobs. Once I open the corpse, I will drag the gold, but leave the gump open near my loot bag, ready to be looted by a single click on the "ok" button. Next, I hover my cursor on the chests/threads etc. When I am ready, I will begin to cast invis, while my character is going through the casting animation, I will grab all the threads/planeswords/shields/paragon chests, then click the "okay" button on the gump for the gold. Just last target yourself when the target cursor comes up. If any mob aggros me and catches me in their reveal, I will just eggbomb.

11) You can also stealth when you are invis'd. Though you will be revealed if the invis timer runs out.

12) If you have already 50 ninjitsu, bumping it up to 70 will let you use llama/ostard forms, allowing you to move twice as fast while hidden. You can even sprint short distances without revealing yourself

13) If you die, the mob that killed you will likely hang around your corpse. Having stealth allows me to safely loot my stuff back 99% of the time. Only times where it's a bit iffy is when there are alot of corpses around. In this case, there's an advantage in having yourself guilded, since the show incoming option or allnames macro will show your corpse in green. This allows you to quickly identify your corpse. Just dbl click your corpse even if you are far away, this sets your last item. Then keep your use last item macro pressed and approach your corpse. You can also run past to do a drive-by if fighting mobs with area attacks like Crimson dragons.

14) When you are hidden/stealthing, switching to animal form will reveal your position. Other people will see a puff of smoke/sparklies that accompanies the spell casting

15) Shadownjump reveals you the same way to, other people will see the sparklies on the tile you jump from AND the tile you jump to

16) When running away from players, animal form into llama mode (or any of the >70 skill that lets you walk at double speed), run in 1 direction, slow down to a walk (so that you don't auto reveal yourself on that first step after hiding), use smokebomb to hide, then immediately switch direction. Most people will think you are still heading in the same direction

17) Shadow jump is more sensitive to z-axis than teleport. So if you can't get to a certain tile by shadow jump, you can try teleporting

18) Chances to deflect an attack to mirror images is equal to Ninjitsu - 30. Meaning if you have 120 ninjitsu, you can deflect 90% of all attacks. This is much higher than the 40% from 120 parry/120 bushido/wielding a 2-handed weapon

Looting
1) Sometimes, corpses of mobs stack on each other and the bottom one doesn't open (it gives you a "you must wait" and opens only one of them). Just hold your use last item macro down and you will eventually open it

2) If the corpse is in an inaccessible area, you can cast teleport/shadowjump and target the corpse

3) Disable gump offset so that all containers/corpses that you open will be placed at the top right of you client window. Then open your loot bag and position it directly below that position. This way when you loot, you minimize the dragging you have to do and thus speed up your looting. Minimizing moouse movements to improve efficiency by up to 500% is taught in designing efficient human interfaces like application frontends or webpages

4) Similarly, try to set macro keys to cast spells/use skills as much as possible, especially those you use often or those you need to use quickly (like recall and sacred "retreat")

5) Cutting up copses and animate dead/spirit speak closes that corpse's gump for everyone that has already opened it. Can be used to buy you a bit of time to loot a public'ed corpse if you are far away, a tad annoying to other people though

Change the "Newbie" section to "Non-Siege/Mugen newbie"(aka Prodo newbie). Don't forget to add links to the FAQs for tamers/thieves, etc. Most/All of that info is shard-type specific. If you're looking for a permanent sticky you should go with things that work everywhere.

Much of your advice should be in the UO Codex of Wisdom or on the website (Hint hint devs.. stop adding things and start getting everything else fixed/up to date).

/rant.. even if it's not a rant.. more of a sarcastic plea.

[edit] I myself had to learn much of this information through this forum or through personal contact. For those of us who did not receive a cd and booklet in the mail, those of us who rely on the UO website for information.. a lot of the keypress information should be listed somewhere on the UO site. Done! Good suggestions. The links are to stratics FAQs and such, since this is a stratics post, so the UOGuide peeps will probably want to edit that for their own links. BTW it would be great addition to have a list of Abyss shard tips (hint, hint). :p

And I always thought it would be nice if they had a database of cycling tips that was included in the info you get when you open the client (patch notes and current events etc). Never too late for that...

I haven't checked this, is this how it works?

I know for 2D users when you make a character you can choose 3 skills, and you have 100 points to choose between those. I usually do 50/49/1 so I can get the items for the "1".

In addition, the KR versions of the standard templates are 4x30, instead of KR's 3x30.

In fact, I recommend in the FAQs and my (Currently unreleased) Tailor Guide revision for UO Stratics, that it's better to start any of the big 3 (Tailor, smith, tinker) crafters as a standard Blacksmith Template in KR (Mining, Smith, Tinker & Tailor, all at 30 - 2d doesn't have the Tailor), as it is cheaper for a beginning player (including someone starting on a new shard), and the mining, smith & tinker quests are so easy to get 50 skill with (and 30-50 tailor easy enough without a quest) that it actually wastes time and gold to go the 50/49/1 option. Bowcraft is easy enough to buy, then train up with the Heartwood quests, so it's not worth sinking a 50 or 49 in, either.

Frankly, the only characters I'd personally start as "Advanced/Custom" would be bards & tamers, and such esoteric crafting skills as alchemy or Carpentry (and those two I'd do as 50/50 on a character, and stone the skills over to other characters - or stone them, delete the character, then create a new character in a different slot (or refill the slot a week later) with a standard smith, and have it absorb the skills)

BTW it never would have occured to me to dog the berserker daemon's steps for free loot. Very nice tip for us lazy pvmers!
Thanks for spotting that, have edited the orig post :D

I start mine with 49 blacksmithy (since it takes more expensive resources) and again, 49 instead of 50 to get the +10 smithing newbie quest hammer (20 uses, but recharges). All the crafting skills can be bought to at least 33.3. Since anything less is not worth it, might as well give myself a bigger lead on the more expensive skills.

Tinkering would be the other skill I would dump 49 points in, again because you need iron or wood, which is more difficult/expensive to gather than cloth. Plus the tinkering newbie quest gives a blessed 600 charge tinker tool.

The carpentry and tailoring quests only give you a newbie craftsman's satchel that contains tools/resources, but no magic stuff or recipes like the heartwood quests :(

At the very worst, you can sell the blessed items for gold. They should fetch a pretty good sum.

Another thing to mention is the +10 mining pickaxe from the mining quest. 20 charges, but it also recharges like the blessed smithing hammer. I don't use it to mine, since I don't want a boosted mining skill to reduce my skill gains. Instead I use it to smelt ores with a higher success rate. Gonna squeeze every ounce of iron out of my hard-earned ore :D

And yes, alchemy and fletching are another 2 expensive skills. For me, they went to a second crafter.

Crafter 1
120 Smithing
120 Tailoring
100 Carpentry
100 Tinkering
100 Mining
100 Armslore
80 Magery

Notes: This provides the best synergies for making all the house-add ons, slap on +music jewels, songwoven sleeves, singing axe, bard talisman to get the 45 music needed to make exceptional instruments. Mining can be replaced with fletching if you don't want to load a second crafter with armslore. However, seeing that mining and fletching doesn't have any carpentry synergies, that slot would be the first to go when SA comes out...

Besides, I have completed training my combat miner :D

Crafter 2
100 Cooking
100 Alchemy
100 Posioning
100 Inscription
100 Fletching
100 Armslore
100 Magery

Notes: Since he has alchemy, I use him as a gardener too. Both my crafters have the same name, so I can "maker's mark" any craftable with my name. But if you have a bunch of soulstones, you can possibly save a character slot. Both chars have magery for hunting in order to get fame to Glorious Lord.

I haven't checked this, is this how it works?

I know for 2D users when you make a character you can choose 3 skills, and you have 100 points to choose between those. I usually do 50/49/1 so I can get the items for the "1".
Yep this is true:
1) Use KR to crate a char, it allows you to pick 4 skills and 120 skill points, plus the dark knight quest. The 2D client only allows you 3 skills and 100 points.
Another nice KR feature eh? I have both clients installed and play 2D most of the time. Tested it a bit, now I just use KR to start new chars.

The only painful thing about doing the min-maxing thing in KR is moving the sliders to give 49, 49, 21, 1.

Having to adjust 4 sliders is alot more difficult than adjust just 3 sliders...

Oh, KR also gives you 10 extra stat points too IIRC.

This is a tip/warning for new characters created in KR if you are going to do the DK quest do not attempt to recall to the DK untill your chance to recall is 100% because if you fail the first time it ruins the rune and will never work again so use a recall scroll and make sure you have atleast 35 magery before attempting !

Yes, I forgot about that. The rune is currently bugged, if you fail to recall off it, you can't recall off it again.

And the Dark Knight is pretty tough for a newbie. Definitely not a monster that a newbie with only 50 in all skills can easily handle.

Edit: You have to be using the KR client to recall to teh Dark Knight. But you can train the character up using 2D.

I think this thread is worthy of being pinned in place. So many things I never knew after playing for so long :D

Sarsmi, sorry, I made a typo : * Once you hide, you can immediately walk to start stealthing, no need to wait for the skill timer or double click the sneak skill.

The "sneak" I highlighted in bold should be "stealth". Been playing Fallout 3 a bit too much lol.

Adding 1 more, - mounting a polar bear (a vet reward ethy) gives a "A polar bear" message for everyone in the area that has UOA configured to show incoming names (not sure if it without UOA). So mounting a polar bear while you are stealthing will essentially let people know that someone is around. Use a different ethy instead.

Got it, and thread updated, and decided to nest the tips in the categories with spoiler tags to combat unwieldy lengthiness. :p

Hey Mith, is there any way to be able to rename the spoiler tags to something else? I tried {spoiler=tips}{/spoiler} but there was no love.

I'm not sure if moving the text into 'Spoiler' tabs did something odd, the last entry in the Newbie Tips section is "Powergaming a newbie on a new shard (by Harlequin)" - should that be a link to somewhere else, or is there missing text after that line?

Agreed! - I have started 3 new characters since October using KR and then switched back to 2D. I play KR from time-to-time and the mods make it all the better, but I just love 2D. :coco:
