The plots do not look square, but will accommodate up to 15x15. Just curious what the extra space is.


and when do we get dates for the drawing(s) and other info?

Oh, and also, where is the line of distinction between southern and northern sections?

Is it me, I am a bit lost on this ?

We do have lumber jacks, carpenters, masons, blacksmiths, minors, glassblowers, and tinkers just to name some of the trades and the gardeners are going to rebuild Magincia by planting Flowers ? Grass huts maybe? Wicker furniture? tree houses? ok sounds ah slow I guess.

Is gardening even a skill ? :heart::grouphug::heart:

Would be nice of pre existing plot holders on Magincia that had to endure being attacked from any number of critters for three years would be able to upgrade their current plots to 15x15.

Well sorry if you missed the BIG MAIN ROAD that separates the northern section from the southern section of the city. I hope they draw your line for you though.

does anyone remember when we had to build the forts at the brit pass? When we collected wood and ingots ? For some reason I thought it would be something like that. we would all pitch in and gather resources like iron wood glass and have to spend time working on the town buildings and it would slowly progress as mild-stone were met... WTF was I thinking ha :confused:

I would hate to see them go for 500m+. Though I see this splitting the main place of commerce, and kind of just spread it out. Too bad it won't bring in more stuff and/or players.

We seem to be told new and then that what we do in this virtual world will actually have consequences; it never seems to pan out though.

To be fair the one who would have made it an actual rebuild instead of whatever garbage they are trying to pass off on us now is no longer the producer.

I'm actually surprised at the level of trash they have managed to produce on this one. They have truly surpassed even my low expectations with an even lower result. What do you get when you mix anger, disappointment and apathy?

There's really only one plot where it might be debatable whether it's in the northern or southern section. Other than that it's pretty obvious if you're looking at the road anyway. If they're dividing it some other way than that road then it is more confusing, but it seems to me anyway that is how they are looking at it. But yes, if Fayled is right then maybe the main road is different on the proposed map.

Ummmm wow my excitement is uncontainable...... Ok the lottery is a nice idea but the spirit of rebuilding maginca is quashed! Lame idea's dev's :(
and if the plots go for anywhere near luna prices after 6 months i will be amazed perhaps on atlantic but all other shards will have maginca turn into makuto jima fast.

Based on a preliminary, cursory reading I actually liked it.

My mind could change with a more detailed reading or 3, I suppose; I do tend to miss things.

I greatly appreciate that most things had an RP purpose and an RP meaning, right down to the way the lottery will be conducted. At first glance, the NPC buildings of New Magincia seemed appropriate.

As to us not having an impact on how New Magincia would look? What is player housing if not an impact? One can reasonably say "I do not like the plan" (and indeed this isn't how I would have done it if I were in charge) but one cannot reasonably say that we will not have an impact on the city. By definition we will.

Indeed my guess is that this was the cheapest way they could think of to ensure that we would have an impact, despite the fact that the promise of a dev whose been gone for awhile now isn't binding upon them.

Frankly, were I them I'd just have built a New Magincia, with Virtue-related quests and Virtue-related content, and left it at that.

We can hope that the limited size of the houses will screen out people who wish to build McDonaldses and WalMarts. And, of course, we can, you know, enter the lottery and do our best to ensure that the players who get the plots will not want to do such a thing.

I will read it again at some point. I suppose I could change my mind but frankly, the worst thing about all the unceasing negativity here on Stratics is that it is about as corrosive as the analytical mind as unceasing positivity would be; not that I've ever once in I have no idea how many years of playing seen, or head of, such a thing as unceasing positivity in the UO player community!

In other words, I fear that the unceasing negativity is strangling our ability to discern when we really should be negative. For weeks now nearly everything has been a knee-jerk reaction.

I don't see how my blue essence is going to play a role.... secondly there is no way this will be a Luna two.... first off you have Zero of the NPC vendors about.


Where is the Stable? How about Magic shop? Armorer, Tinkerer, um... provisioner? The only reason Luna is soooo very popular it's because all these shops are RIGHT there within 5 steps of the bank..... and the stable and moongate are as well just a short hop,skip and a few flaps of the wing and your there....

Seriously. First off you are thinking folk will actually PUT vendors there... what incentive is there for that? Especially those that already have LUNA vendors? Secondly, without the needed stables and things who would want to live there? And finally The plots to be worth much of anything as shops would need to be close to the roads.

Now that's just my opinion... but currently I'm thinking either your not giving me as much to go on as I need or... well no one is going to want to be there.

Where are the vendor stalls going to be? In those dirt areas or will that be gardening areas?

As for Luna 2.0, Magincia is not big. The bank and moongate are near each other and close to all of the houses that will be bought by those who want to spend millions for tickets. I wonder if the Luna vendors will buy up those houses and bid on the vendor stalls just to make sure that it doesn't come close to competing with Luna.

Right. Luna has intrinsic value. It's where everybody bank sits because the bank has every kind of vendor within a half screen. It has like 40 plots around it. There are lots of homes just outside the city.

Why would anybody go visit Magincia? It has no practical intrinsic value. These homes will be valueable solely for their scarcity.

That's right. The devs think so little of us, they've decided we'd be happiest with some more rares.

So , If i use 1 acct and buy tickets on 3 different servers, what happens? If I win on Atl and can't win on Chessy? or can I win on multiple servers with one acct?

Ok, so the Northern plots are acct based. So u can only buy one ticket per acct. Therefore, each acct based ticket will be bound to the server you purchase it on.

Southern plots are open season.

Why don't you take the WRIT OF LEASE and make it a REAL lease with the money going to the city or something... where the owners of the house have to pay LOT RENT and failure to do so for two weeks (or something short like that) results in your house demolished and your items/vendors placed in a special "moving crate box" at the bank?!?!

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THIS ANOTHER LUNA... it will turn into one, regardless of how you try to "release" it.

The only people pissed at this are the ones that have luna houses and are worried they will be devalued.

I think it is a neat idea as a gold sync. Lots of people are going to throw tons of gold at this.

I personally won't, because all I really care about is PvP. But I think its cool that they are gonna make a bunch of people throw mils at it to get a prime spot in the new vending spot :)

Ok, so....I have looked over the proposal 2 more times and still like it.

And this is why.

• The "New Luna" issue
When you look at this thread you'll notice that there's people who think New Magincia will be New Luna and don't like it, and think it will not be New Luna and don't like it.

I, for one, find it unlikely it will be New Luna, and think that's a good thing.

I think it's unlikely to be New Luna because of the lack of proximity of NPC vendors, shoppes, etc; places to buy resources, repair things, etc. And also I find it likely that the 15x15 limit will have an impact on who builds there.

And I find it not being New Luna to be a good thing because we already have a Luna. Not because I hate Luna, I don't particularly hate it anymore than I particularly like it, it is what it is, but because we already have one and we do not need two.

There is one situation within which New Magincia will be New Luna (in the sense of being primarily a place of commerce where most player traffic comes from people buying things, and perhaps in the sense of a place where people bank sit): And that is if the players of a particular shard really want it to be that way.

• Player Control
This isn't what many of us, myself included, thought Draconi meant when he told us that we as players would have a say in what happened to Magincia. But Draconi is gone, and I for one frankly would have kind of preferred New Magincia without player control.

If one is going to have a player-driven city at all, though, one where players have a direct and immediate and meaningful impact on how the city looks, feels, and its culture? Then I'd be hard-pressed to think of a "better" way than by allowing players to, literally, build houses within it.

This means, of course, that if on a given shard players really want New Magincia to become New Luna? Then it will.

• RP Sense
The proposal makes RP sense. Pretty much everything in there has an RP basis that makes a certain amount of sense.

To me that matters and it matters a fair amount.

It also matters that the RP is appropriate. By contrast, look at the Faction proposal from awhile back, where the proposals fit the RP, but the RP itself was flawed, tone-deaf to both the audience it was pitched to and the audience it should have been pitched to.

I feel such is not the case in this proposal, which feels more solid to me, from a fictional perspective.

• Fairness
The proposal has fairness to at least a marginal degree. It's far from impossible for pretty much anyone to scrounge up the 10k necessary to put in for one of the 10k/one chance slots, and even easier for a 2k/unlimited chances slots. Fears that this would become a rich man's playground or some kind of gold sink are pretty much put to rest by the existence of the 10k/one chance slots. And technically even one chance at a 2k slot that's purchased is enough to win it, just, as was the case with the golden tickets from the tale of Charlie Bucket, ones odds increase if you can purchase many chances (for this part of the contest).

• Conclusions
I guess there's probably other things I like, or don't like for that matter, in this proposal too. But it is late and I shall stop here.

Do criticisms of this proposal, I wonder, stem more from it lacking merit, or from it not being the way we would have gone?

It surely isn't the way I would have gone. I would have had a combination of quests and collections, wherein we in essence picked from several different development plans. One would have been New Magincia from Ultima lore, more or less; one would have been Old Magincia, more or less; one would have been a hybrid. (Like say, collect a certain amount of woods, the city becomes New Magincia. Collect a certain amount of marble or rock or something, the city becomes Old Magincia. Collect both and it develops into a hybrid.) Shards that lost the Magincia Attack event from way back would have had to work harder to achieve any result at all. However, I'm sure that my system would have had its detractors. Probably a lot of them, maybe even some of them who would have asked for player housing.

But on its own merits, it's really not bad. I'd put it more along the lines of the Abyss housing quest but on a grander scale. And that one went off fairly well. I suppose they could screw this up in implementation.

But I'll deal with that if it happens.

I went and checked with a sextant to be sure and you're right it is 45, it looked more like 47 to me just eyeballing it. Rub it in all you want it's really not that important. Town sections are not always determined by latitude/longitude. Which makes the overall point won by >me<.

Also the "oooooooo" :lol: Will always remember that!

Forgive me for saying the same thing thrice, but Luna is not inherently evil. It's a place to buy things, it's a place to dye your stuff, it's a place to find a rune when you don't want to run or sail a ship. West Brit Bank never had that. But you know what West Brit Bank had? A bank.

I'm all for nostalgia, but Luna is convenience. Like Woodsman suggests, Magincia will be convenient as well. Two places of convenience is better than one, as it means more competition and more choices. Whether or not you like Luna, Mag is a win-win--unless you're an RPer, and then it's just sad (that we don't get to rebuild). For those who hate Luna, maybe there will be a price reduction of general goods. For those who love Luna, there will now be more places to shop.

Here's something I don't think a lot of the mindless Mythic bashers have consider....

Will Fel Magincia have a Guard Zone?

If Fel Magincia has a guard zone, this means that Fel will FINALLY have the opportunity for an organized shopping area where you only have to worry about catching thieves, with little chance of getting ganked while shopping and getting robbed that way (which is what killed most Fel vendor houses). Reds will also have the ability to finally shop for themselves, instead of using a Blue to run to Luna - provided someone actually sets up vendors for this.

I actually picked McDonald's as a jab at Cal, who used to show a recreation of McDonald's in UO as an example of the creativity of UO players.

I think there are better examples. Just as the team deserves some praise for the Magincia proposal, they deserve blame for other things. That, the McDonald's thing, would be one of them.

For further example. Praise: The Abyss housing quest. Blame: The Treasures of Ricardo quest.

It's ironic, but the lack of NPCs will cause some to reconsider making it their "home" city. It's liable to cause it to be a ghost-town of sorts as far as some are concerned.

I'm all for anything that would get people away from Luna, but it's hard to do that without becoming Luna.

At this point, I think the only thing that will shake up the whole vending process will be another town that provides the conveniences of Luna plus an auction house system, preferably without an auction house in Luna - keep it confined to just a few cities - Brit, Skara, Magincia, Buc's Den, maybe one or two others.

I wouldn't mind Magincia replacing Luna if it wasn't going to be just a god-awful mess of horribly designed homes and instant lag. I don't even like to think about the fact that any new players are going to bypass all of the old cities and head to Luna.
