Ok, lets offbalance the last gloom and doom post. Why do I keep playing Ultima Online?

1 - The Ultima games have always had such incredible attention to detail. Use a dough on an oven, you get bread, etc. Such things are not the focus of the game, but it puts a rich backdrop for the adventuring.
2 - The character classes and skills range are just about right. Not too daunting that you could never hope to explore all angles, yet not too sparse that you'll ever get bored.
3 - Inventive twists like the Doom Gauntlet. I have still not gotten my Orny of the Magician after three years of doing Doom, but that elusive factor keeps it appealing.
4 - The community. Sure we have our share of ne'er-do-wells, but we also have the kind of players I like to play with. Kindred spirits.
5 - Good storylines and nifty surprises have been a standard of EA Mythic for the past few years. There's been a few flubs, but many more successes.
6 - Any time I log onto UO, after all these years, there's always a wide variety of things I can do. UO rarely gets tedious or boring.
7 - We can own our own housing. I hate games where you have to live out of the bank box. The house is kind of a big deal to me -- its not only a good base and your corner of Britannia that you can customize, but it's also a museum of your history in the game.
8 - Paragons, Champ Spawns and Peerlesses. Some of my favorite aspects of Ultima Online, and great opportunities to play with others.
9 - The Ultima Mythology has always been strong, and it is well respected and furthered in this game, aside from very notable gaffes (LBR for instance, was a disgrace and selling out the entire Ultima History so some comic book hack can do a gothic steampunk setting that had zero to do with anything in Ultima) it has held up well.
10 - For a few bucks a month, it's engrossing entertainment. There's always something new to find, years and years later.

I have to agree 100% with you. I've tried other games like LOTRO. Sure I have a house I can decorate, but only where they want me to put stuff and it limited to the amount, plus you can't even craft there. I'm a pack rat (my second UO account was started just so I'd have more room). Also in LOTRO every quest is the same. The roles are predeterimed. I like my begger, herder, fisherman. The freedom in UO will keep me playing. Besides who would water my plants, feed my fish, and refresh my boat . Yes I am a UO addict.

After a long day in the mines or after a grueling battle with a wing of dragons or a hierarchy of demons I like to unwind in my garden.

Agree!!
After 11 years--I still find new things to do or new friends to explore with. Now if I could only transfer my Castle from LA to Atl--I would be set....lol:)

Since I play UO, I don't need any other games to play. I can play every style I would like to. It's almost 10 years. What more do I need? :)

The magic of UO is that you can find something entertaining to do, no matter how your day has gone or what mood your in.

It's *not* just chopping mobs.

And it's not slogging along a set chain of quests, vs a limited set of mobs, to gain another level to get to an end. It's a world you can live in.

UO is a drug of choice... I hate to use the "L" word but here goes. I love UO.

I can do what I want when I want and no one (except a GM/Dev) can tell me no.
I can hunt, fish, mine, craft to my hearts content, decorate, skulk around...seeking precious's Sail the sea and hunt pirates.... cook a dinner and still have a quest for the next day's fun.

Dont want 3d graphics, I want the simple life of UO.

PvP and all the dribble that comes with it. I started this game doing the PvP and will end it doing the same. UO has the ultimate end game and it never gets old. Yes there is the speeding/cheats and other issues but I'll do it till the very end anyways.

For the cost per month I get to have a decent social outlet with people whom I never have met IRL but enjoy more often than those I do meet IRL....odd.

Are positive posts allowed on these boards?

Seriously, I agree with it all. My heart is still firmly seated in UO.
There just isn't any other game out there that i want to even bother with because UO has all I want in a game (world) and then some :)

I love UO... It's my "happy" place. Deco and design are 2 of my biggest loves... yet when I'm all stressed and want to destroy something I can go kill... I don't need a big group to do everything... though I can do things in a group... I need not follow any predetermined pattern... there are quests there to do if I chose to do them... but if I just don't want to I don't need to...

I don't have to wear the same gear day in, day out in the same old grind... If I don't like being a tamer one day I can be a swordsman the next.

If I just want to horse around I can hop on my Beggar and have fun...

I can visit all the other shards should I desire to do so...

UO is the only game out there for me.

The game is truly unique, nice to see some positive voices hype up... I was almost convinced the only people posting on this site were people fed up with life... in uo.

I don't really play a ton anymore, to be honest. But 11 years in, I'm not about to stop.

In 12 years of playing UO I haven't had an enough of an urge to go play another game. Uo has had it's ups and downs and maybe I was on the verge of quitting but then Trammel happened and I have been happy since then.
