Yes, the obsidian would only create a small black bust. I started trying to put one together months ago, but got bored after doing half the quest once lol. You need to complete the annoying quest 10 times to make one random bust, and there is a 1 in 500 chance it'll be named you lol.
I remember years ago when there wasn't much to do or many lands to explore I completed 3 or 4 busts.
