The rebuilding of Magincia should take on a form that is useful.
It will become the merchant capital of the lands.

The island is perfect to become the capital of commerce. Ship docks. Flat lands. The foot print of the fallen city is perfect for opening a merchants market. Easily built rectanglular blocks.

I hope EA creates a city to rival all cities where each account can get a game owned vendor. We apply and a vendor pops up in the city. We cant dress it - only stock it.

Designed well it could hold a 1000 vendors. Ample banks, shops, and YES YES (though I disagree for a world search) a new magincia vendor search feature.

THE OTHER IDEA
AUCTION SYSTEM.

Remember no designed housing or dressing vendors. No eye sores.

The volume merchants should help with pricing. But here is a new idea.

An auction venue. Players can drop their item on a stand. SECURE. The item is tag to that player and it is displayed. Player clicks on the item to bid. Once you bid you get updates on item.

The item is up for 3 minutes. The highest bid has gold pulled from account and placed in the sellers bank. If the items doesnt sell the item goes automatically back to the seller.

If its bought the item goes to the buyers pack.

The auction would be on a stage. 5 auctions at once. Players can cue up there stuff in order. Its open 24 hours a day.

The island would be self contained and searchable. 1 vendor per account.

Oh let me mention the NPC's would have unique and rotating items on them.

Come on EA. Be creative.

And what a gold sink. You have to pay to place there. 50k a week. 1000 x50000 = 50 million. (dont forget your 50k supports a search engine). Want to upgrade the amount your vendor can hold another 50k a week. Want to turn on the ability to see who buys what? Another 25k a week. ETC ETC.

I like the basic concept, but not the high cost of running a vendor (which would eliminate the little guy... kind of like favoring Sears over the mom & pop store).

Merchant capital?? What?? Luna's not enough? We need another location where the prices are only exceeded by hat sizes??

I remember Magincia best when there was Bods R Us, and Goodmans......Paving over Magincia, making it a parking lot, strip malls, and greed infested players, doesn't tickle my fancy. I'm sure I am not alone.

No, I don't play UO to buy and sell, that's done elsewhere, with real capital.

The rest of us do buy and sell anyway. PVM sell things aquired, crafters sell things made, collecters sell there collections eventualy,PVP sell there power scrolls and harrower only items,All of them buy when needed and sell when not needed. Everyone else sells what they don't need and buys what they do. So eventualy everyone buys and sell some do it more than others. Merchant players do it the most as that is a class in itself in UO and many other games since earlie times.

Though there is no point in making another mall as we got tokuno for that. If they ever want to make a magincia mall area like that they will need to make everything tighly packed to be luna like or better for easy access. Unlike tokuno which is large area but everything is too far from each other.

Most likely we get something like we had before. Though I hope they drop some new daily rares there whiout the artifact tag. I think the last one they made like that was the tasty pie.

Remember it have that all might search feature I despise. But it should make for competitive pricing.

Plus Luna prices arent bad. You probably dont look hard enough. There are always jokers with crazy prices.

50k to get your foot in the door. Thats not bad. The little guy would have to wait for more before doing the additions.

But Im talking more conceptually too. The pricing is trivial.

I envision it more like an 'open-air market'... little stalls in a park-like setting. As unlike Luna as possible!

Well, pardon if I seem to contradict myself here but...

Based upon Lore, Magincia was raised because of the lack of Virtue. I can't remember which, Humility? Raised by the habitants of the opposing anti virtue dungeon of hythloth? Anyhow, Lore-wise, it seems like Magincia should be rebuilt to be more virtuous. (humble?)

On the other hand. I kind of like the idea of everyone having the ability to place a vendor in a possible 'high traffic' area, as not everyone can get/have a Luna Vendor.

However, that idea doesn't seem to fit with the Virtues. It seems like that would cause the city to seem even less Virtuous, if viewed from the angle of Greed. Unless you consider the current players that have a monopoly of vendors in Luna being humbled by no longer having the market cornered.

It'll be interesting to see which direction the current UO team heads in. I didn't grow up with the previous games, so I'm not holding the team to strict guidelines. I just want it done well, even if I never use what ever will be implemented.

It needn't be an eyesore since the players would not be building houses there -- only occupying small vendor spots. It could be made into a very attrative setting. Anyway, there are many possibilities to consider and I don't think the idea should be too quickly dismissed.

If you go by the old lore, Magincia was the city of Pride and after it's destruction, became the city of Humilty. While the layout out is great for a marketplace, it does not seem to fit the lore to me.

If Magincia wouldn't work because of its history, the concept might be used on a small scale in the other, (mostly deserted) cities. Allow each account to pay to maintain one (1) vendor in a small central market setting in one of the cities (Trinsic, for example). It would be nice to see those cities being used again.

NO no no . No eye sore. The land isnt customizable. The city is pre-built. The open market is a good idea BTW. The vendors aren't even customizable. Just plopped in pre-determined placed.

No eye sores.

Didnt get as far as the lore. Only the idea.

A lively kicking city. Without the customized eye sores. Where NPC bring in new items, rotate items, odd ships arrive with wares and rares...

Lots of potential.

While we are at it. Lets add the occasional pirate NPC invasion. They cant hurt the merchants but kill the customers.

Lot's of parks and flowers and pretty buildings! I also like the flea market idea...I LOVE flea markets! Having odd things on the vendors (NPC vendors) is also a wonderful idea. Make it someplace that IS NOT Luna's twin. They could add waterfalls and possibly make it a real elven city rather than Heartland where all you can do is walk around and make stuff. If we could sit in the trees...ohhhh can you imagine? The ideas are endless!

Uh... no.

Magincia will become the village of humility if anything (or ghost-ridden ruins again perhaps.)

If you want vendors added to towns, then I'm all for it in general, but only designated locations for purchase and the vendors need to walk around like standard npcs. I find player vendors to be ugly, they should move around and act at least more normal than they do now.

Best way would be to set up in each town four or five tiers of location types, from "acceptable" to "highly desirable". You charge more for each tier, for the location and extra advertising. Each player account can only have one vendor in town across the shard (which stops the one account vendor mall syndrome.) And for the bottom three tiers, you scale their setup costs according to how much gold the player's account has on that shard.

An example of acceptable locations might be the Britain wharf, the western horse stables, etc. They would cost as much as current vendors. A highly desirable location would be the castle gatehouse or wall, or the banks themselves. These would cost in the millions just to set up, with a very high cost per day for upkeep.

Set it up in NuJelm, outside the city there are dozens of small cottages between the back gate and teh Market area. This keeps the city itself, and the palace and gardens, clean and clear, but yet still gives us an open air flea market type setting. I like the one vendor per account idea, that works! It will make people rotate their stocks around, and not just leave dead items sitting on a vendor indefinitely. No housing to be built, just use what it there, and some outside placed vendors on the sand.
Works for me...

That would get my vote. And yes, only one vendor per account... no more.

If such a market proved popular, the idea might be extended to other cities with open areas. Trinsic comes to mind, as there is a large open area not far from the docks, if my memory is accurate. And the one vendor per account rule might be modified to one vendor per city per account.

Magincia should be rebuilt as what Luna should have been; I.e. player-housing/vendors inside the city limits, but interspersed with NPC buildings. Rentable "apartments" in large buildings and rentable vendor stalls (like the NPC stalls in Nujel'm) would also be entertaining.

This idea is great. No more Luna house hogs anymore. Everyone would get a chance to offer something to sell. The idea of an in-game search vendor search engine for the city is perfect. It would annihilate those pesky profiteers (of the cursed Luna) whom we don't speak of. I give the idea 5 out of 5 stars. EA better do it. Or else.

Sorry, but I'm giving this a bump. If this idea can offer our cities-on-life-support a much needed transfusion, it would be good to get more input. Would a Mod like to do a poll on it?

I'd like the idea if there was a way to cap the cost of an item put on those vendors - say 20-30k. That would create a nice way for folks to clearance out their stuff and give it more of an air of a humble flea market.

I own a luna shop and really find the whaaaah about pricing amusing. Thanks to Imbuing I can no longer stock things for players due to unravel shoppers.

Want a flee market area not to be another Luna. The one vendor per account is great. Nice rent gold sink going is great. To keep the greed down there is a simple catch. Players can put stuff on their vendor and price it as they please. Once item is placed on a vendor it cannot be removed. Every day after stocking the locked item drops in cost 1%.

I'm sure this can be abused by multi account players buying goods from themselves. They may get a clue after a while the item has no market or they need to lower the price. Any hoot rent gold out of the game. Just like current vendors the rent is based off the amount total asking gold for items on the vendor. Hey nothing sells the rent goes down. Could have method of tagging items placed on a market vendor. Tagged items can't be placed on a market vendor again till UO Anny refresh day. All tags removed.

Maybe have a $ cap in one area and no $ cap in another area. The OP's original idea would really moderate Luna prices but not if there was a 30k cap. People shop Lunar because they can find everything they want in one place. OP's idea would at least offer one alternative to Luna.

Let's say I both agree and disagree. I would like to see player-run vendors in an open bazaar in every town. One vendor per account, no charge except the normal vendor charges. That way, new players could have a way to sell cheap goods. No limits on prices; it costs me about 3 million gold to make one really nice piece of imbued armor. Then I have to pay the vendor fees and make a little profit for my time. Likewise, it takes a lot of time and effort to get even the marties. If there are price limits, there won't be anything but junk there, and the whole idea will fail. Allowing all players to have just one vendor each, no fees except the normal vendor fees, and the vendor is placed in a random location in any town with spots available, would work great.

What I don't want is something like another Luna. It continued the AOS philosophy of making the gap between the haves and have-nots as wide as possible. If you were lucky enough to get one of the houses inside the city, you were an instant billionaire. On Atlantic, vendors rent for as much as a million gold per week. One player can make 100 million per week from just one vendor house.

That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing player owned houses in New Magincia. Just mixed in, with a couple of open bazaars where players can come and hawk their goods, as well as having npc exotic goods vendors, and player-owned vendors.

Magincia should follow the mythos and be a poor, humble town, not the decadent city of opulence it once was. I would like to see sheep walking on the streets, with some sheepherder NPCs, dogs and cats and chickens running around. Peasants instead of nobles. Farmers' huts instead of palaces. All player houses have to be little 8x8s. No house can have more than 6 vendors.

If any such "fixed" player markets idea were to be implemented, rather than limit it to one town, why not have a designated area in ALL of the towns?

To my mind, this would encourage players to visit and use ALL the towns more often, rather than be devoid of anything but NPC's.

Also, should someone place a vendor in such an area, they could have a character title, similar to those from the library/museum quests, showing their "support" of the town their vendor is in.

"Marketeer of Vesper"
"Jhelom Trader"

etc... etc...

Also, a restriction similar to housing, that players are only allowed one vendor per account. Players must then choose which town they place their vendor and "support". This way, it's then up to the players to encourage visitors to the town of their choice, thus attracting more people to the towns in general.

If its bought the item goes to the buyers pack.

Too wowish for my taste... Iam all for taking the best features from other games and implement them, but auction houses could hurt the vendors... and vendors is an essentiel part of UO imho

With all the retreads in the game. This would never work with all the bidding and not a cion to their name. They ever want to do a market place they need to pick the brains of those that have run ingame auctions.

Cant bid if you dont have the gold.

Should be fast paced and chaotic but secure.

Bid if you have gold. Everything is automatically transfered.

Cant bid and then remove your gold either.

I second this vote.

The All Town idea is really great. I do love the idea of more than just Luna for player vendors as Raven brought up (and I do have a Luna house).

It is a fact that many towns just are not utilized as they could be, and this would be a great first step; revitalize the activity level through desirable and positive means!

I like it.

I think this is probably the best post here. Get the towns hopping again and get some folks OUT of Luna Luna Luna. The other towns are awesome too! Plus it gives the poor man a chance to make some money instead of having to pay $10000000000 for a luna spot. Good on ya Llwyd!

I agree that the cities are seriously under populated and under utilized and would really like to see some sort of marketplace in each city. The devs should take note of the player-run cities, especially those on my home shard of Chesapeake. I've seen a large boost in activity in these areas.

I'm sure they have their plans already. I'm not a big fan of all the talk that focuses on vendors.

Guess I should put my 2 cents in.

Let's say we get clean up crews in Magincia.
Players do whatever to rebuild a bank, a stable, maybe a couple of the standard shoppes.

A marketplace is built similar to the old Felucca Trinsic one

Special automatic rental agreements are placed.
an account can hold one vendor spot at a time for one month.
Once an account has held a spot, it's ineligible for another spot for a month.
after that there is a random cool down period before another contract spawns.

Also built are empty plots.
Of these empty plots maybe 3 go to the top 3 contributors of the rebuilding.
The rest are offered to already established player towns.
So now you have a town with some basics. a fair market area. And the rest belonging to an already established community, that more than likely would make the town better than anything anyone has ever seen.

Oh and of course one plot automatically goes to me for being so darn brilliant!

I think it is a great idea, an open market type thing, and I have a Luna shop.

I had hoped the open market design was what would happen at the Brit bank. We got a nice park {LS}.

So I think Maginicia could work too.

What the city was it can never be again, so it stands to reason it could become something new. :)

I like the sound of the idea but I also like house vendors. When I sell stuff I usually price cheaply and sell everything within a few days, usually bringing in 20-30 mill as I restock every hour or so. Location is no problem as I leave runes at the main spots, then after a few days I shut it down, sold out or not, and wait maybe 6 months before doing it again. Being a merchant takes time, and high-priced items eat up profits if you don't sell quickly.

I also like the out of the way house vendors that I know of where I buy my regular supply of H runics at 200k, compared to the 400-450k prices in Luna, and a regular supply of Translocation powder at 10 for 2,500 gp, not forgetting stuff like Anat 120 and other 120 power scrolls at 100k, Heartwood and Barbed runics 1.5 mill, Yew 300k.

Luna doesn't have everything, but usually nothing is cheap, so I would rather shop around. My guess is that any convenient place would end up like Luna, just overpriced.

I have seen alot of great ideas on this (and other threads). However, I fear what we actually end up with my fall very short of what we have dreamed up. Maybe I will be proven wrong (which would be good in this case) and the dev team has something extra special (creative/new) cooking for us with the New Magencia - I am not just talking about a one time event but a permanant change that keeps us interested/coming back for more. Like others have said there are alot of things that can be done to get people back into the habit/routine of visiting the towns beyond just Luna. I dont know about any of you but I kinda miss the old days of "town hopping" to find out where the action was that night.

In any case... I like many others can't wait to see what the future holds for NEW Magencia
