It is great seeing all the open and honest comments about the Stratics Community Vision.
I especially appreciate the openness that is being provided by the board leadership. A lot of boards would just focus on the status quo and see conversations like this as a threat. Well done team.
Maintaining a space for conversation without stupid drama and endless conspiracies that can never be proven one way or another is important I think moving forward and I like the unleashed area that provides a place for those people who like the drama and conspiracies.
While in the decade past a major push was made to become the "official forums" for UO created a tightening of rules, guidelines, and processes, I think it is fine to go back and open up some of the doors which closed in the effort to align tighter and refocus on the Stratics Community. Building the community in turn supports and grows the game.
Opening the platform to what the community is interested in discussing and talking about is a key part of that. I don't feel we should let fear of what might happen get in the way of that. Basic guidelines for the mods to guide how people interact in a conversation is fine.
Scripting - notice I am not using the word cheating here. Open the discussion and let it happen. Doesn't mean you have to have a data base or wiki created about it.
Scammer alerts - Sure you might get a false accusation here and there. The community seems to sort that out pretty quickly itself. Don't make it Stratics job to vet the information. Just provide the space for the discussion and the guidelines on how to have it respectfully. The rating systems seem to work pretty well as people engage in them. Maybe recognize a good trader every now and then with a special tag or label to encourage participation.
Community events - maybe be a little more intentional about recognizing community efforts. I know this can be staff driven or volunteer driven. There are some fun members out there that like to post about positive news events and happenings. They just get tired of the stupid drama. Over time the crew will grow.
RMT - This existed for a very long time on Stratics with little to no problems. Regardless of anyone's personal feelings about RMT, it is part of the community daily activities. If you want to set a guideline to keep it just between players and they have to use the rating system that's fine. I could see making a limit to keep out the RMT websites. That is who the fight against RMT is really all about. You already know who those people are anyway. The average player looking to cover their monthly subscription cost or securing that PS they need for their new pet isn't.
Freeshards - I think a lot of interesting ideas come out of these. Explore everything UO.
A good place where people can go to engage in all things related to UO really doesn't exist.
Stratics can be the place where you can go as far down the rabbit hole as you would like. Plenty of community to talk with and learn from. Provides the player with all the information so that they can decide on what works for them.
The question is, what are the next steps to opening some doors and which doors are the next to open.
I'm not going to speak for everyone, but I'm open to sharing my thoughts on some of the things you said here, others are just too complex for me to do a quick comment on.
I don't think any of us are against people making threads like this or the discussions they contain, as long as they are civil. That hasn't always been the case in the past, but it's been a process of reevaluation and baby steps as we try to evolve Stratics since the official forums launched.
Unleashed has been something we talked about on and off for a while, the major update to the site just seemed like the right time to add it. I do like that we can use it to feel out topics that have been traditionally taboo on the main forums.
Scripting as a topic has been something we've said before we're fine with people discussing but not in a way that promotes people doing it. Unleashed opens the door on this a bit more, as I mentioned its a great place for us to feel out how people will react to a topic.
Community Events: We'd love to see some, but finding someone with the time and creativity to continually work on them hasn't been easy.
Scammer Alerts: We put a trader rating system in, no one is using it., the main reason is people want to be able to call out folks but do so anonymously and right now that isn't possible. Believe it or not, Stratics' trade forums are a lot like a high school, with various social cliques, we've seen it before where one group will target an individual by reporting posts, only for another group to target these people in turn in retaliation.
Freeshards: I'm not completely against bring them into the fold, it's more of a question of
how. I'd rather not mix Freeshards with Official in the same threads, there's so many variations possible with freeshards that threads could get quite confusing. Stratics did support emulators many years ago, that was what UOX Stratics was about, maybe we'll see a return to that in the future, complete with its own set of forums.
There's more I could say on each of these but it's late and the brain is starting to object to rational coherent thought at the moment.
