UO Japan also took down their character search?

That would be weird, unless BioWare doesn't want UO players outside of Japan accessing character search through UO Japan.

Keep in mind that UO Japan has a different website team (and it's a team, unlike the UOHerald.com website which is one or two people who work on Warhammer and Camelot as well).

If they did it simply because people here were accessing it, it blows a hole in the official explanation regarding that kind of functionality being removed from the UOHerald.com, Warhammer, and Camelot websites. Some Warhammer and Camelot players were convinced that EA ordered them to remove that stuff from the UO, Warhammer, and Camelot sites because people were using them to figure out game populations.

Keep in mind that Kai officially/publicly said that Realmwar status would not be coming back to Warhammer's website when it relaunches.

The Warhammer producer said the RealmWar stuff was removed for security reasons and that the website needed to be rebuilt. But I find it odd that Camelot and UO also lost similar functionality, while UO Japan still kept it long afterwards.

If there was an actual security problem, it seems like UO Japan would have lost their character stuff when UO Herald did.

If Warhammer isn't getting the Realmwar stuff, we probably won't get MyUO.

I dont understand why they couldnt have just restricted it by Japanese IP addresses and only displayed Japanese shards.

Anyway it was taken down cause you could infer nummber of p(l)ayers from it. i.e. 12 months ago there were 40,000 unguilded vet characters total on all the shards. If we assume the average p(l)ayer has 3 vet unguilded chars on all shards -> 13,333 p(l)ayers.

So wait, it was taken down because they don't want us to know what the subs are for UO?

If that is the reason for destroying one of the most successful tools that UO has to offer..

Did notice that in the producers letter, he did mention that they were planning on relaunching the UO.com website later this year, so hopefully these features will be restored.

I hope so, but he's not in charge of the website, and the people (or person really) who are in charge of the website don't know how to develop websites that pull that information from the game.

It's not a coincidence that the same type of functionality was pulled from the UO, Camelot, and Warhammer websites. Somebody at Mythic had a reason. Possibly security as they claimed, but who knows.

So Just How Many Players Are There in UO? | UOJournal.com

Correction it was ~32000 vet unguilded characters on all shards in July 2011 before the account migration. Vet unguilded characters is the best figure to use because it wont include "noise" from trial accounts, holiday gift chars on all shard, test chars, 0.1 skill bod collectors etc.

Besides the fact that that is character numbers and not player numbers. Most of us "vets" have 7 characters per account, so the total number of characters should be divided by 7 if you are counting players. (without taking into account players with multiple accounts).
There are X number of characters, not X number of players.

The number is total vet characters that are unguilded. This doesnt include vet characters that are guilded. Yes it is 7 max characters per shard, but an account can have characters on other shards too.

It should be easier to read the EA economical monthly report than trying to guess how many accounts are active...

Funny how they can tell the world with press releases how Star Wars has 1.7 million active players (both subscriptions and those still on the 30-day trial).

I'm actually surprised they would talk about Star Wars' numbers so prominently, since the last MMO they sunk a bunch of money into and promoted had one of the largest and fastest, if not the largest and fastest subscription drops in history. It's still amazing to think how fast Warhammer fell apart.

But it's also depressing since UO and Camelot paid heavy prices for Warhammer's failure :(

Only way you are gonna find out how many active accounts there are is if you went around and counted how many houses there are on every shard... (That would be hard)

I am pretty sure everyone or most people owns a house..

I mean, if anyone is up for it, by all means. Do it. :D

Are you being sarcastic? There are a lot of RTB and bugged houses.

I actually thought there would be a lot more houses drop in IDOCpalooza, or at the very least, not that many would be replaced. I was way wrong, at least on my shard. All but a few spots were filled in as soon as they could be. In theory there should be spots opening elsewhere from people dropping houses to place where the IDOCs were, but haven't seen that many.

wild guess: UO brings in between 5 and 10 million per year and salaries and other costs are between 1 - 2 million per year
