UO does not have nearly as many players as WoW. UO has mounts in the Store. You want them to go from 10 bucks to 100? $100 Silver Steed.

Who gets the money generated by the UO store? If it goes to EA, no thanks. That would not help UO.

I doubt Rob is that poor of a negotiator to allow EA to eat all the UO store profits. If so, they wouldn't be putting items in there. It's likely a percentage to each party. I also doubt they'd ever publicly disclose the revenue details.

UO never has sales on the sovereigns or other things in the store. Makes me wonder who runs it. If buying things from the store would get UO more employees, I feel many of us would buy things like this. Someone ask Fenneko.

You could ask, but she probably doesn't know, and if she did, she wouldn't be allowed to tell you. EA are very, very, very fond of NDAs

EA's arrangements with subsidiaries like Broadsword often have the subsidiary collecting all the revenues from their respective titles, then "kicking up" either a flat fee or percentage of profits directly to EA corporate, noting that all of it is ultimately consolidated into EA's annual financial reporting.

It is a good thing for the game for the UO Store to generate revenue, and the UO Store should continue to feature new and limited time items to drive sales.

Wasn't it you that was saying, not so long ago, that UO shouldn't be a "pay to win" style game?
Lots of opportunities to increase UO Store revenue without turning UO into a pay to win game. After Messena's poor attempt at the store by implementing several pay to win items, I think she got a little behind hurt over the backlash and then just ignored the store. Hopefully that changes now. There have been quite a few games now that have implemented a successful store without destroying the game they could take inspiration from. Heck, some of these games generate ten times the amount of rev with an equal number of players than the traditional subscription based service and they have a thriving player base that isn't pay to win.

I think they'd be able to create a fair amount of money after each of the events by selling dyes that are the same hue as the event (demonic, wildfire, etc.).

They could also make money by allowing transmogrification of all armor so players can look however they wish. WoW does it. GW2 does it. I don't see a reason not to.

Finally, they could add dyes for certain pets that do not come in various colors. I for one would pay for dyes for tritons, especially after the glitch occurred and we could see what he tritons would look like in various hues. Let me buy a boura dye, or a pack llama, a giant beetle, etc.

Dyes make the most sense in my opinion, since they would be constantly in demand.

Improve the layouts of the various towns in Trammel with more houses, make it instanced housing for players, no vendors, and charge $5 or $10 extra a month for each account that wants it, or a one-time fee ($20 or whatever). I'd pay it to actually live within the city limits, within a house that is accurate to the locale (not a Borg cube or user-designable in general).

I don't mind the UO Store deco only type of items like dyes and rehued (current) items like they did for the soulstone and mounts, but I'd be fundamentally against something like paying to have houses in certain locations or functional (high end).

It's pretty much like that already with the vast majority of castles or keeps being sat on by scripters who don't even allow you the chance to place one yourself. The only difference is that the money being exchanged isn't going to the devs, its going to asshats who actively make the game worse. If I could pay like $40 to have a castle worth of storage and space in an instance, I gladly would. Castles on the mainland would still be worth a fair bit for the prestige of having a vastly more public and limited location. As things presently stand, the housing issue rewards scripters outright and shafts any legitimate player from even having the opportunity unless they're willing to pay scripters prices, or get extremely lucky by watching every chat channel possible 24/7.

While this 100% an Atlantic issue it is 1000% true IF the team wanted RMT shut down they would sell everything the third party sellers do in the store cheaper. And raffle off every Atlantic plot from idoc

Paying to have houses in certain locations or other such items shouldn't be in the store. Deco is obviously a good choice. I'd say that there should be some packages that include increases in storage space, etc. They've done that in the past with some of their smaller expansion packages. Lots of quality of life things they could add that people would want, but also wouldn't break gameplay.

You mean like Malas? Or the people who are paying real money for castles and keeps to third party websites?

Note that I mentioned "no vendors" and instanced, and you could even limit the number of items/lockdowns. Would keep out the malls, keep the lag down, and would allow for improved roleplaying within the cities. And possibly it would liven up the cities outside of Malas.

I'm just saying that after all these years, it would be cool to actually live within the cities I normally just visit for a few minutes for banking or trades, and I would pay for that as a way to generate revenue.

I humbly do not think UO needs to copy anything WoW does. UO owns a niche market and they are profiting off of the players they have, they are releasing gacha content like colored nightmares for a limited time only, and they are thriving. There are events all the time and new content that is not behind pay walls. You can play or you can pay but for the most part you are not pay to win in this game, yet. Asking the UO devs to give us something equivalent to a luxury brontosaurus, I guess? I mean, I hope not.

I guess it doesn't matter, because I am not spending $100 for anything in the game, but others would, and that's how the F2P market goes; except we are not on a F2P model, so if it is a vanity mount? Ok, fine. But if it has stats, and they lock it as a pay? Gross, hope not.

You don't have to pay for potions, you can get drops without them.

You do have to pay for other things in the store to get those things.

UO does not have pay to win, it just has potions that you pay to get items faster than without paying. Only during dynamic dungeon events.

UO has pay to deco more than without paying.

Yep, I don’t have time to grind these days. I’d rather spend my game time doing the stuff I find fun instead. Now what I do have is disposable income. I get what I want, UO gets a micro transaction and nobody was forced to “pay to win“. Seems like a good system to me that should be expanded.

You do realize that the RMTers also are selling sovereigns (ie UO Store money) in the game as well right? There are a few players that you can contact and they will sell you any item you want from the UO store and as many as you want for a price. I've talked to a few and they were willing to take in game gold or Venmo for "the order".

Side note - a funny thing to do to some of the more sneaky ones is to ask what they charge per 100 sovereigns (with UO gold); they will always say "depends on what you buy". Then you say something like a soulstone (1k sovs) and then 5 luck potions (1k sovs); the prices will be different depending if there is an event going on or not.

Lol. Back when i played WoW, having a huge mount like that was a big advantage in Battleground PvP since you could use it to cross some rivers without getting dismounted, such as in the Twin Peaks Battleground. I used to use my Grand Black War Mammoth to carry me and guildmates across the river in Twin Peaks. That Brutosaur Mount is ****ing ginormous compared to even the big Mammoths of back when i played. I can just imagine how colossal a Tauren under the effects of a Giant Growth elixir riding a Brutosaur would be, lol.

Kryonix has always been an innovative dev, focused on player events, and he is now at the helm. Shards regularly have live content, and they're continuing to add regular content that doesn't cost anything more than the monthly/six month subscription. There were events from Thanksgiving through New Year's and they actually have a community presence now on social media, the best they had in the last two decades if not ever (since social media when the game started was moreso mIRC, ICQ, lol...AIM...by volume, may be the best ever right now). If they were "getting by," you would start to see some sweeping changes, that, or a completely free-to-play model. If we ever got the numbers on how much they made off of the Nightmare event I bet it would surprise some people.

Anyway, your thought is kind of the way things go, can't please everyone with a game state, haha. The funny thing is I bet if you suddenly added another 100,000 people to UO the game servers wouldn't be able to handle it :p.

I guess I would ask what you envision "success" should be for UO?

UO itself is a success. It literally changed the way we interacted with each other in online video games. It helped pave the way for other MMOs. PvP. Random Debauchery. Fan Websites....ect. Just how random stuff was because it was driven by Humans inhabiting this virtual world. I love the game lol. Been around since 98. I am a fan.

But. Lets not make it sound like its WoW. A game, and IP that is THRIVING. Because, they update, expand, and create NEW content. Not saying its all great or revolutionary. But its NEW content. Thats what a thriving game would be to me. That would be a succesful and thriving game. Which means, more content, more updates, more NEW stuff. UO, has added new stuff, but no where at the pace they should if they want to keep growing. Instead, they rinse and repeat the same stuff year after year with small tweaks here and there. Throw in some pixel crack, and different colored mares....they just kind of kick the can down the street. I wouldnt say that is thriving. But again, people have different perspectives sometimes. Thats cool.

This game, has paid for itself over and over and over for EA/Broadsword. They throw enough at it to keep it running because it produces a small and tidy income. Enough so that it gets juuuusstttt enough help to keep the heart going. Basically like a pacemaker. Little shocks to keep it going.....and to keep bums like me paying for two monthly accounts that I barely log into...every month since 98. I love the nostalgia and memories from this game.

Ive met some amazing people on this game. Lost some amazing people from this game. Ive had to endure real life stuff. Good, bad. The ups, the downs. Life, Death. All of that real life stuff, Ultima Online has been a part of. I would rather be home playing UO than out drinking. Hell, there are people on this forum you have interacted with, for ever. And, you probably look forward to the banter. Literally sharing differing opinions on someting we both like. Bringing all sorts of people together. Strangers, from all walks of life, religions, political beliefs, wealth, race, gender...ect. Different countries and nationalities, all coming together. All so that we could tame fake dragons, collect pixel wealth and interact with people so you can escape reality for a small bit of time. Many laughs and tears have been shared by many strangers in this game. Some strangers become real life friends, husbands and wives.

So yea, I would say its a success. Just not in the same sense you do I guess.

Since you asked. =)

Do we want UO to be like WoW, though? I certainly do not want it to be like WoW, personally. I think the grass is always greener on the other side...

Here is a quotation from a post from a year ago, on the MMORPG Subreddit:

This has happened to me and a lot of people I know. The progression has become a monotonous “grind your keys, get your weekly loot in your vault, rinse and repeat” seasonal mess. Gear doesn’t have the same value it used to have when you earnt it many expansions ago and the game is just super streamlined. I get why they did it, and I understand catering to a broader audience but it’s lost its value to me.
Kind of sounds like how you feel about UO.

So, yes, different perspectives of course, but I am not sure it is fair to write off the last five months of UO as just "rinse and repeat." They carried on a five-month storyline from November to to the end of March (Echoes of the Blighted Realm), all while continuing live events on shards. I felt every storyline event was engaging, and the Eclipsed Dawn champ spawn was unique yet generous to noob players and had mechanics to annoy (if not challenge) sampire builds and vets alike. The retargeting AI and teleporting led me to teleport away, too, haha, not the most crazy of tactics, of course, but the shared mechanics of the stones and so forth, while incoporating past mechanics, was arranged in an enjoyable fashion. The rewards kept people there as well. People quickly found out how much time it would take between spawns and they played around that timer because they couldn't wait to do the spawn again to see what rewards they would get. Additionally, I got a Swightflight drop from one of the bosses and was able to help a guildmate complete her Marksman set, something that she thought she was never going to complete. Likewise, I was able to get her one of the rarer colored nightmares. Both instances were memorable moments playing with my guild that has been playing this game for decades. Kind of nuts! Yes, that's thriving to me.

Not only did the devs create five months of events, but they listened to player feedback on the official message boards they host. They adjusted things like Nightmare spawn locations to make it easier for people to farm, and they provided a rather generous timeline to acquire said nightmares. They post on the Ultima Facebook often, where a good majority of the users dwell since we are old lol, they have a growing YouTube presence, they are making New Legacy Japan, which if successful, helps everyone. The last note I can see about Japan from the U.S. pages is from 2021 when Mesanna was looking for EMs, but I am unsure if my Google searching is accurate, there.

I would have liked to see new sprite art, yes, I would have liked new .muls and animations, and while the paperdoll art is cool, and people certainly seem to like the idea of that, I do wish UO was a fully three-dimensional world like WoW where they could model things out easier. It would be nice if they could figure out a way to create a process by which they can produce .muls more easily, and to some extent, we could look at third party shards and see some of the custom content people make and really ask why the UO devs cannot do "more." So yes, I agree to the extent that I would like to see "more," but I also respect the fact that a third party shard does not have to think twice about anything they add. They are illegally using assets and code they didn't design and they answer to no one.

That said, who can forget Andrea's Pixel Challenge, which she started in 2004? I don't think it still exists on Stratics...the last thing I see from her is the "recreation of Ultima Online as a 3D experience." It looks like @Saphireena hasn't posted here since maybe 2019. Anyway, I am excited to see what Kryonix will do, and to see the new art to be introduced over the next year.

Would be ok with the store allowing me to become a legendary fisherman with a super slayer harpoon gun for some sovereigns while it's taken you X amount of time to build your fisherman?

Most of my characters reached their full limit back when Power Hour was a thing, and I was not pleased with the introduction of the Advanced Character Token, and its current-day replacement the Mythic token (I think I still have an ACT, but not sure, but I have plans for it if I do).

However, over the past few weeks, I've been helping my kids out with their crafting characters, and rather than have their limited screen time be spent grinding, I've been helping with GMing blacksmith, alchemy, tinkering, tailoring, and fletching, and a few other things in my spare time.

I've had UO running in a second monitor to the side while I'm browsing the web, emailing, etc., and I'm just running the built-in EC macros, and....I've come to realize I should be okay with somebody paying Broadsword for a fully-built or nearly-built character. The alternative of building your characters yourself, at least the crafting ones, is literally A) determining if you have the resources and B) let the EC macros do their thing, with me occasionally having to recycle something or hop over to a shipwright to sell some spyglasses. That's assuming you are a long-time player who knows this stuff.

And I really believe this if you are a long-time player for the non-combatant skills, because you are going to A) have the resources (or can buy them) such as ingots, cloth, hides, etc. and B) know that the EC macros can get you almost all the way to and beyond GM. If you want that high-level character you are just going to grind them out through macros if there's no token available, but what's the difference if you pay $20 or $25 to Broadsword? They get more revenue for something you were doing to do anyways.

I'm not really a fan of new players being able to buy those characters though, and I'm not a fan of a newbie getting most of the way in a combat or mage template or a tamer template because I think there is a lot of value in them learning everything as you progress, and I question how capable you will be if you start out at a high level.. But I recognize some are not going to be fond of UO's skill-gain system.

Why should new players or returning vets who lost account suffer training taming or any skills just because we did back in 99 or 2000 I get if you want to but it's really only high end content that's worth doing and you need a decent character

I can agree with that - there's no way to differentiate between a true newbie and somebody who is coming back.

I just think a true newbie will find themselves in over their heads really fast if they come in with a high-level character. But that's ultimately their choice.

They have changed despise and blackthorns both places we used to train. What content would you recommend for a underdeveloped character that would prepare them for the end game things roof, underwater boss, event arcs, much less pvp?

PVP...not going to touch, because even I'm not even interested in what's required to be competitive against the scripters/etc. I did it years ago (factions), but that part has changed so much that I don't see a point now, when I have so much other content to churn through.

As for training/preparing for end-game stuff, I honestly think that here in 2025, the NL shard, or hooking up with guilds like the Wyvern's Lair or other newbie-friendly guilds is the best way to go about it (and WL is based on the NL). You really need to have somebody showing you the ropes or a guided experience like the NL.

If I had to pick, I'd say the NL is probably the best way to go about things for somebody who is new to UO. The only reason my kids (and I) have not fully committed most of our UO time to NL yet is because they wanted to build a house and pull out a ton of stuff from my main account's bank box. It took us a week to find a spot, and then a few weeks to design the first floor, and then another few for the second (don't ask, lots of compromises were made) and then we took a break for a while, and now we are finishing up the 3rd floor and the roof, and along the way they were working characters up.

We are about to fully commit our playing time to NL though and I feel like that will be better, because I was literally just taking them around to spots I knew they could easily handle with me around, but I don't know that they were learning much outside of configuring their interface and keyboards and learning limitations.
