They are "characters" not "toons"

What else would you call it except coke? It is very simple... Coke is a brand coke is a style of drink. The capital "C" is the key. Now if it is at the beginning of the sentence capitalization will be confusing. But for that you are on your own.

Now I have to figure out what coke I want with dinner. Coke or Mt Dew?

Avatar seems particularly apt for UO as it has roots in both the game lore and internet parlance. I think it's Sanskrit so it's certainly not a new term. I remember hearing "toon" long ago, Poo said it on the Bard forum, but it was also long after I started playing. I hadn't always heard it used, rather char or avatar. It instantly conjured images of WoW-like cartoon figures.

In-game I'll only ever say you, me, he, she, it, they in reference to avatars, and only the character in question, not any "alts" they may also play.

Most alternative terms don't irk me, nor do their origins, so long as people say what they mean.

I've always preferred to say "toon", for the last 10 years or so in UO. Not sure why, or how...

Its "char" that bothers me. That's a type of fish. Or something left behind after combustion.

In France, we say a "Coca" for Coca-Cola, a "Pepsi" for Pepsi Cola, but basically German have it right calling them all "Cola". That way, it works for all of them, even regional brands. Ich möchte ein Cola trinken. Simple.

(Whoever thought "going forward" was a catchy phrase should be locked up forever.) (Going forward)
have been holding the keys for this far too long, perhaps we should mount a posse

as far as the 'toons', Flutterbug..... for me, it began in either Kesmai or ImagiNation, don't actually recall which, carried over to The Realm but here, for me anyway, the term just never seemed to feel right, so I generally call them all by name... the other places were cartoon-ey, but the characters in UO never looked that way to me
Going forward my toon experienced a substantial paradigm shift in a recent mob encounter...

Thank GOD there are other people who feel this way about the whole "toon" thing.
I've come to the point where if I am reading a post and someone uses the word "toon" I stop reading. I just today realized I do this. I tried to go back and reread the post but couldn't do it.
But calling it a doll is somehow ok? lol! (aka paperdoll, since when is UO made of paper)

You can call it an avatar, but then again, thats wrong too.

Could call it "the humanoid likeness pixel representation of my numbers on <XXX> server", or THLPROMNOXS for short.
I really hate to agree with LC on anything, but I'm afraid I do in this. Language is simply a way of communicating. Language is constantly evolving. Words change meaning, new words are created, spelling and pronunciation changes. It's part the life of the culture a language is part of.

I don't particularly like the word "toon" either, but the truth is everyone knows what it means, and it communicates precisely, simply and accurately. The same applies to the word "mob", or "alt". They are all really technical terms specific to mmo's (which is another fine example of the evolution of language, not too many years ago the term was "mmorpg", but "mmo" is so much simpler). :)

If you got ganked by fire deomons I would suppose the latter.

As soon as I first saw that term being used, a couple of years ago, I knew it was fated to overrun UO.

Similarly, but much MUCH less annoyingly, PvE has overtaken PvM.

That I'm ok with, but the "toon" thing has been hard to bear.

I am fortunate indeed that I gave up trying to fight "toon" as soon as I heard it, and immediately recognized that we were doomed.

So my advice, flutter, is to just surrender, as I did years ago.

Handwriting on the wall can't be erased.

No there is a difference between total comprehension and having to stop and figure it out and in a fast moving mmorpg having to stop and figure out simple ideas can be costly.

P.S I have to agree with my spell checker toon's not a word

Well the meaning of toon is almost intuitive. When I first heard the word toon I knew what it meant, and disliked it. But when I first heard mob and alt I had no clue what they meant. Once they were explained to me and I knew what they meant and I disliked them. I personally don't use any of those.

I have "characters", "other characters", and I fight "monsters" or "critters". But that is just me. And I am an NPC.

Yep. That's me. I'm just an NPC. Sure am glad the Bountiful Harvest has U-Verse. The clientèle just ain't what it used to be. (Sure miss my old town) :thumbup1:
If your character in game is an NPC, then are you scripting? Because imo the only time your character is an NPC is when its afk or illegal macroing/scripting.

Do you really know what NPC means?

Need to get them in Felucia.
Repeat after me.

FEL-UCCA - Felucca - gotta get that CCA sound at the end. NOT cia or fel-ucia.

Like Felucca, Felucia is also a fictional 'space body.' The only difference is that Felucia is a planet from the Star Wars universe, Felucca is the moon/facet from Ultima.

A Felucca is, in reality, a boat.

Pretty sure he misspelled it on purpose, as did the person he replied to and the person who replied immediately to him
Was tongue-in-cheek.

Totally irrelevant, but the way I remember how to spell it is that it's 'one L of a place 2 C' - Felucca.

Indeed, in the spirit of the early part of the thread.

After reading about half way through the first page of this thread... I just had to stop and wonder if I should be curious as to why UO doesn't get new players.

So much hatred, over such a trivial thing.

If it bothers you so much that people say "toon" or "rolling a new char" to the point that you have to make a post about it on an internet forum, then you probably should seek professional help.

Hmmm... playing a 13 years old MMO in 2D means professional helpers are already seeking you to bring you back to their help centre.
