When my character can be riding his Ethy through an in-game rainstorm, and have it slip and break the character's leg, or randomly get struck by lightning THEN you can call it "PvE". Until then, since the only thing that CAN hurt me are other players and in-came creatures, there is only PvP & PvM....

The only time I use "alt" is if I'm on character "A" and I'm identifying character "B" as ALSO being one of my characters. "Alt" = A character other than the one I'm currently playing; not to be used when not playing, except to define the term (As I'm currently doing).

Mobs: only if I'm getting mobbed by the monsters (though I'm prone to call them critters or other unflattering name)

Toon: This isn't ToonTown or FusionFall. OR, for that matter, the "Toon" paper & dice RPG by Steve Jackson Games (which was a hoot to play).

People calling their characters toons majorly came from our favorate World of Warcraft kids.

I cant say people have never used the term "toon" to refer to a character in game. But I know those damn wow kiddies made that term very stupidly popular. And many people followed thinking it's cool(?). Same **** with the whole tank/buffer/healer and dps. Oh and some WoW geekish terms like "aggro"~~~ WTF is an Aggro (can I eat it?) is it even in the dictionary? oh and I know what aggro means. :coco:
In fairness, the term tank existed in UO back during the tank mage days.

Dps (as in the actual term, not as a classification of a character's role which I believe is what you mean) also existed in UO back in the pre WoW days. Stratics had tables that listed the damage each weapon did, how fast it swings and calculated the damage it did over a period of time.

That's why my first char was a macer. War axe had the best DPS for a 1 handed weapon.

I have used the term aggro even since the release that changed most monster AI to become aggresive. The debug messages in test center at that time will actually show "xxx is aggressive at you" at the bottom left of the screen.

So it kinda stuck, and being a slow typer, I use aggro instead of "becoming aggresive" as it's much easier to type :D

I call my characters toons sometimes. Heck I use toon interchangably with character all the time. Of course, I have played pretty much every MMO from Asherons Call to Star Trek Online, and in between, so I guess I picked it up somewhere else. I honestly don't see what the problem is.

its just pop vs. soda

You mean "coke".
I can't believe nobody said anything about "Main(s)" although I did see one complaint about the use of the term Alt.

They are characters, the thingy in the upper corner, that'd be the avatar, or perhaps paper doll.

Toons were on TV Saturday Mornings or in the Sunday paper.

I will make up some randomness to join in on this subject. I do not normaly say "toon" but as of lately it is fitting on the chesapeake shard due to the fact you have to "tune" into the the server in order to change chars!!!!

Thank GOD there are other people who feel this way about the whole "toon" thing.
I've come to the point where if I am reading a post and someone uses the word "toon" I stop reading. I just today realized I do this. I tried to go back and reread the post but couldn't do it.
LOL I just thought of something. Majority of the posts I think in this topic have been using the word toon so are you reading those? Now we know how to keep Flutter away from topics you dont want her to post in. Just use the word toon in all ya topics and posts and she wont read them lol :p

Do I have an issue on this? Not really - at least not to the point of some level of anger. Someone else pointed out that they see it as interchangeable ...

I liken it to being able to understand posts even tho spelling and/or grammar may be horrid. I read typo very well. I just shrug it off and go on with whatEVUH, you know?

And for Basara - I consider "mobs" as valid for multiple "mobiles" as in targets, mostly used to refer to NPC foe. Just as valid, IMO. <shrug>

wait, you're saying that grown men as elves dressed in dayglow clothing, sporting neon hair, bright sunglasses, earrings, and riding on top of similarly colored mythical creatures, aren't toons?

i suppose it is quite normal in the technicolor nightmare that is UO nowadays.

I do not have "Toons" I have Characters.

I do not have a "mule" I have crafters.

I also don't fight "mobs".

I would never refer to my characters as toons.

This ain't WoW and I'm not in Toontown.

But then I enjoy RP... RPPvP and PvM.

Toons just makes me think, "What are we all in Kindygarten?" No... I'm an adult... I have character which comes with age. So when I hear folk referring to their characters as "Toons" I get the image of little kids playing house.

Maybe you do. But other people have Toons.

Why the complete lack of tolerance for other peoples preference of what THEY call THEIR characters?

Mule, Toon and Mob are all legitimate terms in the MMO arena and people shouldbe able use those terms as they see fit.

this thread, and this forum it would seem is full of Bigots.

Here, in some parts of Australia (parts where I have been/lived) what we call a toon goes something like this, John says, "Did you want to grab a toon for tonight?" Bob says, " How about a slab and a bottle? Jill and Mary will be here."
Toon= Carton(pronounced 'cartoon' = toon) of beer Slab=Carton Bottle=Bottle
So give me a toon any day. :D

In England, the "Toon" and "Toon Army" can refer to Newcastle United Football Club and it's fans.

Geordies (residents of Newcastle), are also often heard to say: "Wor man... we gannin oot for a neet on tha toon?"

This genererally refers to an evening of drunken debauchery, in the "town".

As does people (usually americans) calling football "soccer".
You DO know that it was the British football association (can't remember the exact name) that coined the word "soccer", to distinguish it from Rugby, right?

UO might be unrealistic but its far from cartoonish, so I think toons are kinda laughable. But maybe a lot of people still lives happily ever after like children so their character is so cute its like watching cartoon. I guess that's a valid view point.

Besides is toon a valid English word?
And I failed to see any smartasses explaining the term "aggro" because I am very courious what kind of reasonable explainationthey can come up with. At least mule exists in my webster english dictionary. I tried to find aggro and toon but no luck there.

I obviously don't care what it means. And this whole thread is pretty much a joke... well except when I threatened Flutter. rolleyes:

but that is just my opinion. and everyone is entitled to my opinion.

I know all kinds of gamers i used to hang out at e-game (internet cafe). Among those Lineage 2, EQ2, EVE, Mortal Online, Guild War, Warhammer, Darkfall and World of Warcraft players only WoW dudes call their characters toons (i guess all their characters must look really ****ing bad then now I know what toon means).

Most people from most other games refer their characters as "characters" or "my guy" or "my [insert a class here] and again as far as I know at least in at egame, only wow kids use toons like e.g my main toon has over 7000 achievement points, all my other toons are level 80 already.

Again I still cant find toon or toons in my dictionary on my shelf  (dont give me online bs because some online dictionary says "1337" means something else than 4 numbers or one thousand three hundred and thirty-seven.

It's funny so many people have responded to this thread in a serious manner after reading the body. You'd think Flutter just denounced "God."

Well, I guess if this many people can waste time on a thread like this one there are absolutely no bigger concerns regarding Ultima right now, which is the only positive I can take away with me after reading through some of the arguments here lol. People are wasting their time fighting over nerd definitions. I love it.

I don't care if you call them chars, cars, toons, dudes, doods, dewds, d3wd$, tanks, twinks, or whatever. Just shut up and play the damn game and tell your friends to join so they can get carpal too, you noobs, lol.

Looks someone really likes the term toons for his characters. rolleyes: fine fine fine whatever a toon is, you like it that way.

Well this is from dictionary.com

"Toon":
–noun
1.
an Asian tree, Cedrela toona, of the mahogany family, yielding an aromatic red wood used for furniture, carving, etc.
2.
the wood itself.

"Toon"2:
1.
A cartoon, especially an animated cartoon.
2.
A character in an animated cartoon.

So yea, maybe I am too old but I've never seem cartoons that looks as nice as UO. And I can tell you my UO character will not be the superstar on either Cartoon Network or Disney Channel... some people love cartoon too much. (WoW also has the youngest average player age)

excuse me if I offended any of you wow kiddies here because I called you guys"kiddies". Please dont tell your parents on me. I mean I am just joking.
Anyways, my characters dont look like cartoon, nor do they look like a cartoon character. And my characters certainlly do not look like a ****ing tree.

actually i think toon was used in a game that folded about the time WoW(Greatest oxymoron in the modern world) got started so most jumping from that game to WoW brought that word to WoW.

BTW ain't is also in the dictionary and is totally inappropriate to use, unless your a mouth breather who's married to there sister/brother

There was never a British football association and the Football Association (of England and Wales) coined the term Association Football to distinguish it from Rugby, not soccer.

hehe, I used to call every coke type/flavored product "coke". (Coca-cola, Pepsi, RC Cola, other generic colas...)

Server - "Would you like something to drink?"
Me - "I'll take a coke"
Server - "Will Pepsi be fine?"
Me - "That's what I said, a coke"

Soda could mean Sprite, Rootbeer, Orange. To me, "coke" meant the cola flavor. I guess I should have used the term "Cola", but that didn't sound right. Anyway, I got annoyed with having to explain myself, so I started saying "Coke or Pepsi".

oh, btw, I use "Character" ("Char" for short).

For me, toon seems too kiddie. I guess that comes from cartoons general association with children and toon sounding short for cartoon.

I might say "alt" when refereing to an alternate character, or another character that is not the character that I am currently on or talking about.

I use "mob(s)" when I want to quickly refer to a monster or beast (any AI that is not an NPC or a PC?), despite alternate possible creations of it. NPC for Non-Player Characters and PC for Player Characters...

...

That brings up a question about people that use the term "toon". Do they call them NPTs? Non-Player Toons? or does NPC stand for Non-Player Cartoons to them?

I just can't get people calling it "Pop", I usually call soft drinks by name though, being in the from and still in the South I usually order Iced Tea (which thanks to the influx of northerners here you have to order as "Sweet Tea").
