catship is right, though bow works better, as the bows weigh 1 stone less than crossbows, and as a result can start with a larger amount of wood on you. As long as you are under your max carry weight after the bows disappear from your pack, you'll be able to claim your reward, if it will fit.
If you use KR (the best way for the quests, because of make number and mark as quest item options), start off overloaded, with the amount of wood on you that is the highest multiple of 70 you can hold that is 60 or less over your max weight before being overweight.
If you use 2D, you'll have to mark by hand, but if you use the bows instead of the crossbows, you can start with more wood. 490 wood will become 420 weight of bows, for example (but would stay 490 if crossbows). This works for the weaker crafters who don't have enough strength to start with 490 boards with KR.
Note that 430 boards on the crafter, and 1600 boards in a single pack animal, is enough for 29 quests. If you can get into Heartwood with 500 boards (instead of 430) on you, that's 30 quests instead. This is because a full pack animal is 10 boards shy of 23 quests worth for the bow and crossbow. You just got to remember to bring your normal tools (or if a tinker/bowyer, bring a tinker tool and 10-20 ingots), to keep yourself from looking foolish.
