is there any method to getting a runic fletching kit with the heartwood quests? is time a factor like in the elwood and hag? would making bows out of higher quaily wood improve my chances....? cus ive invested like 25k boards at this point and best item was a 1/2 ring with 35 EP given not a shabby item but not what im doing it for....

I haven't noticed any difference on getting a runic between what is being made, how often you do the quests, or if you wear a talisman or not. I think it is all random.

Doing 1 full Beetle of wood every day before I go to sleep. I have seen the extreme randomness. I have still to this day never got even 1 heartwood kit. I have got a ton of the others though. I have gone 2 weeks without a single kit, but my load I did yesterday I got 3 kits. It was the best day I had for turning in ever (1 oak, 2 ash runics only 1610 boards used)

What really sucks is when you get a bag that shows 3 items inside and you get all excited....open the bag and its just a bow, ring, and talisman (all junk).

I just started using the Heartwood quests to raise fletching yesterday. I went through 1000 boards, (no packhorse just ran from bank twice), and got two ash runics and an ice slayer talisman.

When people are receiving runics, are you accepting every quest, or do you pick and choose? I have been declining all but the Darts and Ingenious Archery III (I am at 95 bowcraft) and haven't got anything in nearly 20k boards. Am I just that unlucky??

When I do it to train up fletching, I start making the next level of bow when I could make them around 40% of the time, so I've done all of them from bow to composite bow, and it didn't seem to make any difference on getting a runic. Now if I'm just doing the quest to get runics, I just make the bows.

catship is right, though bow works better, as the bows weigh 1 stone less than crossbows, and as a result can start with a larger amount of wood on you. As long as you are under your max carry weight after the bows disappear from your pack, you'll be able to claim your reward, if it will fit.

If you use KR (the best way for the quests, because of make number and mark as quest item options), start off overloaded, with the amount of wood on you that is the highest multiple of 70 you can hold that is 60 or less over your max weight before being overweight.

If you use 2D, you'll have to mark by hand, but if you use the bows instead of the crossbows, you can start with more wood. 490 wood will become 420 weight of bows, for example (but would stay 490 if crossbows). This works for the weaker crafters who don't have enough strength to start with 490 boards with KR.

Note that 430 boards on the crafter, and 1600 boards in a single pack animal, is enough for 29 quests. If you can get into Heartwood with 500 boards (instead of 430) on you, that's 30 quests instead. This is because a full pack animal is 10 boards shy of 23 quests worth for the bow and crossbow. You just got to remember to bring your normal tools (or if a tinker/bowyer, bring a tinker tool and 10-20 ingots), to keep yourself from looking foolish.

Well, tonight I did another 2000 boards and about four quests in got an oak runic! It was for completing a repeating crossbows quest.

Is there a guide anywhere that talks about the best things to make with runics? Are oak runics any good at all?

you're not bugged - that's the normal streakiness of the supposedly random number generator.

I went TWO YEARS between my first and second runics (granted, I was only doing about 2k boards a month over those two years).

Since then, I have gotten 3 runics in 2000 boards - or go 10,000 without any.

There's no way to predict HOW they are going to fall.

I take a beetle full and a packhorse ful of baords each trip and out of approximatley 30 trips to heartwood I have reveived 1 heartwood,1yew and 5 oak runic fletcher kits.It is really reall random though.I can burn 1600 boards and get an oak kits and then burn another 500 and get a yew kit,but then I will burn 8000 boards and get nothing but junk.I have burned about 20k baords since my last kit though, which wa an oak.

It is just like traing skills to 120,you just got to be patient and it will come to you when you least expect it.

PS. Are the Oak Kits worth burning now or should I wait until SA to use any runics?

Aren't the town attacks Trammel only? I walk from the bank to Heartwood every 500 boards and see only the occasional faction player no monsters.
Maybe Fel is safer for bowcrafting?

Since getting two ash runics in my first 1k wood, have got nothing in the next 7k.

why are people so expectant to get heartwood runics? its not supposed to be an high drop rate. no sense in getting irritable when you dont get one.

Fel is iffy on safety. Since the Heartwood gate is not in the guard zone, you're easy pickings if you are near over weight. I did that the last week and had 2 factions there picking off people going into heartwood. Pretty lame-o.

Well... I just started doing the Fletching Quests. Started with only around 36 I think skill. I loaded up my bug with its fill of normal wood and myself with 10 NPC bought kits and proceeded to Heartwood. Found the appropriate NPC's and went to work. I was almost out of wood and at 39ish skill when I received my very 1st Runic, and it was a Yew Runic to boot!

I was wearing a Talisman that added 21% Fletching Exceptional Bonus and 22% Fletching Bonus the entire time so that changed my % of success slightly making it decent in gains and wood usage (I unfortunately didn't count how many "turn ins" I did though). I did this exclusively on the bow quests, refusing all others, and alternated every other NPC.

So I'll pop back in again after I do another full load the exact same way, gaining as I go in the arts and will report if I notice anything that may even "remotely" be considered streakiness. I don't know if it will help, but all the info one can get on such a subject will only in my opinion add to the accuracy of anyone's researching projects :scholar:

~Elvish has left the building!

***EDIT to ADD SECOND ROUND***
Rinsed and repeated above, nothing in the lines of Runics, junk for bows and jewelry (1 ring only had 1fc, nothing else lol). I did get 2 talismans though that I liked, but I'm kinda nuts and collect stuff. I got a Talisman of Frost Spider Summoning as well as one of Panther Summoning. Worthless, I know, but like I said I like to collect sets of stuff... must be OCD of some sort lol.

***EDIT to ADD 3rd/4th ROUNDS***
Rinse and repeat except I removed the talisman today after 3rd round since I was gaining less often. Skill is around 54 now. I received mostly junk but I also received an oak runic towards the end of round 4. Each round consisting again of roughly 1600 boards worth of wood, and at my skill seems to get me anywhere from 15-20 quests per round. I would say so far either I am very lucky or the RNG just happens to be hitting a streak for me right from the start.

I found an oak runic kit lying beside the trash barrel this morning.
