Recent bannings: A casual players concern

Someone on here mentioned "The Ox Bow Incident" recently. I had that EXACT thought in my head just prior to seeing that post. The Salem Witchcraft Trials also sprang to mind. I'm probably a duper now for not following the collective. :)

It was about 150 accounts, all told. Not a terribly large-scale ban in the grand scheme of things.
Thank you for this figure.

Yeah, it's very hard to call 150 "large-scale" or "mass." I regret that even I've used that terminology throughout this....Though in retrospect, I'm not sure why.

This interview:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/warhammer-time

puts the # of UO subscriptions at about 100,000. 150 out of 100,000 is slightly more than one-tenths of one percent (.12%).

Thank you.

And I shall make a suggestion...If there's a next time, you may want to put the # of accounts in your official announcement. Get on top of this issue right away.

We UO players are a skittish bunch these days. Information can only help.

It just seems actions that appear to be a threatening official policy of punishing the innocent to cripple the guilty is a blatantly stupid form of fiscal suicide. Instilling an atmosphere of fear-due-to-ignorance into an already extremely weakened environment will have repercussions that will further damage the viability of the game, at least in the eyes of many subscribers.

Almost every time I start reading Stratics again I'm sorry. I don't know why I ever pay any attention to this scaremongering forum. It's not like I don't have anything else that actually matters to worry about. <sigh>

That part was for Jeremy. I have seen in other threads where people said that. If you are acquiring dupes one items at a times I still don't think you have anything... much to worry about. If you are acquiring 30+ at a time, then yes, you need to worry. And I agree if I believed they were banning for one duped items I would close my accounts and I would assume other people would(did) too.

I bought 1-2 at the time and xfered them , my problem was that I did not burn them right away but stocked em for a few months... dont do that if you buy anything , buy one burn it , buy one burn it , buy one burn it.... dont risk getting banned like me , I didnt think I was doing anything wrong , and I still dont think I was , Ea dont agree but hey they suck soo....

I havent seen one person banned who wasnt involved in mass buying/luna vendors and xsharding. I havent seen one person here say there were banned who wasnt involved with one of the above.
I was banned and not involved with mass buying, didn't have a vendor and haven't xsharded in over a year. I'm a casual pvper and that's literally all I do. Log in once a week at most, pvp until I'm frustrated and then log off.

I did have a reasonable amount of items from idocs, but EA described my offence as owning a multitude of highly illegal items, and none of the idoc items were even worth anything. If the old stratics posts were here I would even link the thread where I indexed these items trying to make sales. The unsold items are, by virtue of their being unsold, not really worth a lot.

In answer to your pre-edited post: "Anything more need be said?"

Personally? Yes, to EA/Mythic: "Stop messing with my head and let me relax and enjoy playing the game already!"

I would say take a break then and wait til this blows over. Unfortunately it is not in their nature to stop messing with our heads. Not with so many people screaming for different reasons and their willingness to do something(anything) about it.

I've maintained throughout that we don't, and won't, know the full story from EA/ Mythics perspective, and that their priority has always been to ban only as a last resort, the young player exploits for Melissa tickets being just the latest example of how actions that should cause a ban more times than not - don't. I also refuse to pass judgement on any of the players complaining. I have to tell you however, that for the first time since this uproar began, I felt trepedation on making a player vendor purchase in Luna. No hammers mind you, and no unusual prices or abundance of fresh new identical items (I took the time to check every vendor within and around the city). Despite loathing players who knowingly cheat, I've got to tell you, such discomfort when simply buying an item within the game does not reflect well on how the issue has been handled from a public relations perspective, or from a comprehensiv eand clear policy/ procedure for rectifying misconduct within the game, or confidence that an appropriate clean up has actually occurred. So now that I've actualy bought something again, this is my vote of non-confidence, such actions should cause NO concern. It even surprised me I felt this way :(

This is remarkably well said. I feel absolutely the same way. I walked through Luna the other day and saw a couple of scrappers and very much wanted to buy them because I could afford them but not the ingredients to make them. But the price was so low, I was afraid to get them. I don't do the peerless events and actually play very little now. But I've been around since just after beta and have collected many, many items over the years. So how do we know if something is illegal if we don't read stratics a lot. Oh sure, like most, I scan through the boards, but what if I missed something.

I guess my question is why can't they just delete something if it is illegal especially now that they've done the ban. I understand the need to ban those responsible, but again, what about the casual player. Is this scare passed us? Or are we still in danger of being banned because we inadvertanty purchase something that somebody else inadvertantly purchased that somebody else...

Please fix this.

These bannings were done by a group of mindless idiots who thought that punishment would appease the masses and spread fear throughout the land to cow us all into behaving as they wish us to behave.

If EA wants UO to thrive, the last thing they should be doing is to scare us all. The post above mine is a clear example of what the result of the bannings has been. People no longer feel free within the game. The sense of freedom is what made UO popular 10 years ago - this freedom is what made UO what it is today. It is no longer a leader in MMORP gaming, but it was the trendsetter - it established the genre. I've been contemplating leaving UO for some time, but it is the freedom and the community that has always kept me from terminating my account.

EA Mythic has decided that they need to curb our freedoms and interfere with our community in ways that make this game unappealing. I don't want to play an outdated game that is run like a cartoon. If I wanted to play a PG game I'd play WoW.

This game is no longer enjoyable on many levels, but I will likely stick around until the end because of my guild - no more, no less. This game is of the players, not of the developers.

I'm playing but not enjoying. I'm bummed. Part of the start of my UO day used to be cruising the shops, seeing what was new, picking up bargains when I could find them. Now that's out. The shops I'm certain are honest are pretty much empty, and I just don't trust the Luna shops anymore.

Guess I'll get that last 15k points then take your suggestion and find my entertainment somewhere else besides UO for a while.

No 1 duped item won't get you banned. Say the words "DUPE, DUPED, or DUPING in game; BAM! a permaban and your house deleted.

Don't believe me ask Lady Damia of Legends shard. All she did was warned her guilld at a guild meeting AGAINST DUPING. She was warning them because many of them had expressed to her the "If you can't beat them, may as well join them." mentality. She called herself trying to (hopefully) PREVENT one of her guildmembers from doing something stupid. It cost her, her account. What a load of BS!

You've got to stand for something, or you'll fall for anything.

If it was said to guildmates, at a guild meeting, then one of her "Friends, ie..guildmates, paged on her in order for her to be actioned as you claim. Guild meeting are usually held at guildhouses and closed to the public

u speak from freedom and community.
freedom and community got destroyed from the scum-player.
scripter, duper, exploiter, scammer, damn, the whole game is full of this scum
all those scum which posts here on stratics that it is ONLY pixelcrap what we earn in game
(fighting or working hard for ).if all is only pixelcrap, then why they play this game?
why dont they play testshard only??
why play millions of gamer WoW?
all those morons wich are to dumb to fight a mongbat, only if they run scripts and speedhacks they feel strong herself, loser in game are also loser in real.
all these bigmouthes player or guilds in game, telling what they have and can do and dominate in game,
they dont realice that they destroy the whole game with this childish behavior.
the real fairplayer in uo are since long time the minority
all these whiners here that post that they are 100% innocent, but everytime wilki or jeremy take a look at this, they could affirm the bann.

selling gold for real cash is not wrong,
but playing for a living (people who dont go to school or to work) destroy the game
for those people it is indeed only pixelcrap, because they dont care about ,they only have cash eyes.

i think ea/mythic is 5 years to late with the mass bannhammer.
community is destroyed, many fairgamer left this game, the morons win (lose)

I hear that. Hopefully we will still be here when you get back. Maybe they will make things a little more clear when everything cools down a little. Having people afraid to play the game isn't in their best interests. Good luck to you.

I don't support dupers in any way shape or form. I completely support EA and the Devs on that. But, just as in the real world, I as most well run businesses and even in the evil political world know you need good comunications to the people. And you need it fast and clear to cut down on what ifs and he said she said and whatever the "sky is falling" chaos you may have inadvertently caused or purposely for that matter. If there is not quick and clear comunications from the individuals that have the authority to calm the masses, whos fault is that? Someone dropped the ball. This thread and many more might have been many times shorter and the tone could have been different. Somone knowingly created a monster. Now you need to be the professionals you get paid to be and the paying customers count on and do some damage control and clean it up with a sense of urgency. Or does someone sit on a throne and say 'I don't care" ? Last question out of order? Perception is half the battle. What people percieve.Yes, tuff love or coaching for mature adults in the real world. It may be a gaming company but you deal with more than pixels, people are in the equation that pay salaries and always hope for the best possible experience every time they log in.
