Question - Targeting?

There are a multitude of targeting options in both clients. I rarely use any of them, because I just can't work out how, and in what circumstances. For example 'target next enemy'. I can't get it to do anything. Does it only work when the 'enemy' has already targeted you? Cycling through targets either leaves me dead before I cycled to the one I want or I cycle past it by hurrying too much trying to avoid that happening.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this dilemma, so can those of you who use such things as 'queue target' 'nearest enemy' etc please help us out by giving examples of how and when to use these options?

I have set up (For EC client) My mouse wheel scroll up Target Last Enemy and and mouse wheel scroll down for Target next enemy.
I also have my option set to always attack.
Target last i use when i fight monster who have the nasty habbit to cast invis or jump around. Then i get the same monster back. Target next enemy is use about all the time. Its possible to go over the enemy if you scroll to fast. But thats why i can use target last to go back a target.

The target next enemy seemed to very usefull on TC1 in the void pool where the only you want to do is to keep hitting monsters as fast as you can. ;)

I use the Tab key frequently for "Target nearest Enemy"

I also use a macro on my bard that goes : Target nearest enemy, Provocation, Target Next Enemy
Just two examples I use a lot.

I have "Target nearest Enemy" as CTRL+TAB and then "Target next enemy" as TAB.

Not really played around with any others. I never had much luck myself.

This is one of the other problems i have had. Sometimes i get surrounded by targets and i can't seem to find one close enough to hit. I have to ctrl-tab and attempt to grab a health bar to double-click. If you are not already fighting, your toon will auto-defend attacks so I think that auto defend should be an option so we don't sit there getting smacked around while we try to manually target someone. I will try what Frarc uses to see if that works.

I use an EC macro to Target Nearest Enemy, Honor Target, Attack Target. This way, I first honor before attacking the nearest enemy. This is so handy in a crowded area (remember those?) like EM events. You don't even need to see the target to honor and attack first.

I got tired of it never targeting things right and all so now I use the EC and have it turned so I have a tab just for "enemies" .... from there I just click the bar of whatever I want to target.... using pinco's UI I can see a nice big showing me where the monster/person is... works great!

i have a few targeting macros i use...(I use CC in which they're called "select")
select nearest hostile + attack selected target (attacks the closest creature that is currently aggro on you)
select next mobile (cycles through all creatures on screen)
select nearest follower + bandage target (when i have taming on bandages my nearest pet)

select nearest mobile + attack selected is also good but VERY dangerous one to have on as you can easily attack friendlies or if you accidently hit it in town you'll get guardwhacked...so personally I avoid using it (I wish there was a way to turn on query on criminal actions while inside guardzones only....having it on outside of GZ the popup box will get you killed, having off inside of GZ the lack of popup box will get you killed O_x)

I use these as well, but I throw in a wait for target in between select and attack. I think it's silly that I do that because it's probably only for spells but I got into the habit of always trying to insert some sort of delay between my macros, lol. But yeah, can't imagine running a sampire without those macros.

If the system doesn't work at all you may need to turn the advanced targeting system on.

It depends on the type of character. Like, with the mage, I use the space bar for med and target next. So, every time I hit the spacebar a different enemy target will appear and then I can use a repeater macro or a spell cast that will target current.

In most of the initial attacks, you want to create a line depending on that character type but I think the main thing is going to be to go into war mode, then target nearest, this way you can click inside the target gump. Plus, if everybody gets near the same target they can use the macro to attack that target.

But you could add things to it after that. So, you would go war mode, target nearest, attack current, all kill, target current and then perhaps, Honor could be added in the beginning and if you're using a weapon, concecrate weapon and divine fury and then your weapon special. So, that would all be in the same initial attack line and happen in about 2 seconds depending on spell times.

Like, with a Sampire, you might build a string of commands to attack nearest target, whirl wind, repeat a few times, add in concecrate weapon and divine fury when those timers run out and then repeat. So, you can kind of put it on cruise control.

With a Bard, you're going to want an enemy list or attackable list so that when the spawn pops up you click on the bar, that puts it into the target gump, then click your peace repeater or discord and then just make sure you have target current. Same with provo. Just make a macro to target current, provo, target next, use target.

And I use timings after alot of the string is finished. Like, with lightning strike off the initial attack but usually by that time I have used a different macro but if I haven't, it will just keep lightning striking about 8 or 9 times.

And I use target self on the side of the mouse. There's a whole lot of ways to target and you have to be careful not to use attack target in some cases because you will attack EVs or people but you might want to create different situations and build the macros for those situations depending on if there are EVs or no EVs, stuff like that.

i have one of them fancy shancy gaming keyboards that has all the extra keys on the left side.

so for pvp in the CC i have them set to use some of these targeting options.
i personally have never gotten any of them to work real good other then the Select next Mobile.
then the key beside it is attack selected.

its indispensable for running chases where they are peacing or popping smoke or getting a running hide off to break the attack, you just cycle through till the bar you want lights up, then click attack selected and you dont even have to stop running.

i know some of my guild mates use bandage others and they just hit a button and they start healing anyone in party that is close to them.
i havnt tried that one yet, but its next on my list of ones to curl up and get personal with.

For some of these options/macroes you have to have the "new targeting system" enabled.
To do this in the classic client, go to options, then select the top tab on the right (looks like a mouse) and make sure "Disable New Targeting System" is unchecked.
I spent a LONG time arguing with an alliance mate that I had my macro set up correctly and it just wasn't working like he said it would. He said I had to be doing something wrong. I said I was doing exactly as he told me.
Turns out some macros simply do not work if the above is checked (which I had turned off on all my characters on all my accounts when it first came out because I hated it).

I always combined UO macos and UOA macros on the same key if I was targeting myself with a spell. As an example: Cast heal and drink a cure pot with pauses added so both macros could work same time. Another maco was banadage self and drink a greater heal pot. So on and so on....

Target nearest enemies I used the UO macros. If they are blues and not flagged to you then it will not target them. Been a while but isnt one option say hostile or something?

Except the Honor part, this is the very same macro I use: Target Nearest Enemy, Attack Current Target. This makes the life so much easier for an archer, especially in crowded places like champ spawns or em events. However, EC somehow sees Rising Colossus or Energy Vortices as enemies too, not sure if Pinco's UI fixes that.
