Doesn't bother me at all actually. When I left UO 4 years ago (stopped playing but account was kept active) a majority of the houses I recalled being open to the public and usable forges were only as far away as the nearest house - been back now 4 months and I was curious what changed - hence the questions about it.
If a person wants to make their house private for whatever reason, more power to them - it is a shame however that a number of people are doing it (based on the posts here) only because they fear being robbed or a victim of some exploit. And like someone else pointed out, if there was a problem with unchecked burglary of UO homes (I also think) these forums would be full of posts about it.
I don't think the problem/reason is credible - exploiters go steal from my house if you can, i'll be glad to post your success here.
