It's pretty common to leave a pet outside a house (for an Auction or in-game event) for 1-2 hours, then when you go to get the pet it's down to 'Very/Rather Happy' or lower. I've also seen pets drop from Wonderfully Happy to Very Happy after ~10-15 minutes of being alone in a non-house area.

I thought I had corrected my earlier post as all unstabled pets every hour(real time) have pet loyalty test, not every 4 hours.
