New skills idea

I don’t want to take credit for the idea because it wasn’t mine, but I definitely have forgotten where I initially read it, so please if this was your idea I just fleshed it out a little and you can tell me what you think! I just loved the idea and can’t get it out of my head.

That being said… I like the idea of adding some successful aspects of other rpgs and the like to Ultima Online.

A successful kind of character, or build or whatever is a monk. Plenty of games have monks, including one of my all time favorites Icewind Dale.

Monks used their hands to battle, martial arts, so to speak.

They benefitted from not wearing heavy armor.

If I remember correctly the person who’s original idea this was said pretty much that, if I’m wrong please let me know. What I think is as follows.

Two new skills could be implemented making this build possible.
The first would Martial Arts. It would be a basic melee hand combat system where the specials would be stances such as defensive, and aggressive.
The monk would benefit from not wearing heavy armor and not riding a horse.

If monks were to only get a bonus from not wearing armor at all I would say we needed a new skill like chivalry. For the sake of me not thinking of a better name for it, let’s call this one Divinity.

Divinity would be a following in certain paths or virtues, done at a holy place of study.

There would be multiple paths to follow and each would reward different bonuses.

For instance one would result in high resists in two of the 5 and grant increased speed on foot
Another would grant high resists in two of the others and also increased mana regeneration
And the last would open up spells like stone form, and increase in physical resist, and an increase in hp.
The monk could follow mainly in one but also the other two, just not to the fullest.

Like virtues the study or quests would have to be repeated so somebody wouldn’t just get 120 divinity and have all the mods. The life of a monk is possibly more difficult than that of other types

There is more but this is the idea, please I understand some people hate ideas like this, and I want to hear what those people think too. Any input is great I got a lot of good feedback on the underwater/sea dungeon idea I’d like some constructive stuff here. There are obviously holes in the idea but it can be worked out. Let me know.

Thank you!

I like the idea of a monk as well. Several years ago I posted a long suggestion for it on the UO newsgroup. You can still read that at Google Groups:

* Citizen of Balance

It shows it's age a bit, being posted 27 Mar 2003. It doesn't anticipate other races, skills past GM, etc. But I still like the idea in general.

Kung Fu (or variations thereof) would be a good real life model to base such a system on as it is practiced by monks.

It can incorporate more than just empty hands combat, though, so perhaps it could be an augmenting skill (similar to bushido) that works with the regular melee weapons skills but also unlocks combat ability for Wrestling too. There would be some compensatory factor for not having held items with mods on, but nothing so terrible that you have a fully effective non-disarmable opponent to worry about. Something with enough twist that you're not simply making another ninja or samurai class. Also some specific weapons such as the monk's spade and so forth. I like the idea of Divinity and it would be a good balance for the fighting, the Yin and Yang of eastern martial arts practice.

Monks would be good. So would Sumo wrestlers, which would have been perfect for the Samari Empire expansion and might have made wrestling a more useful skill.

I think they were called "clerics" in Ultima III. It has been awhile. Healing and curing powers to be used for helping others. Almost like a protector character or something of the sort. Been a long time...

Funny you say that i made a character just for that
Magery 110(15 from book)
Eval 100
Weaving 110
Anatomy 90
Healing 90
Animal Lore 90
Vet 90
Chivalry 55+jewels

This is basically a newb helping support character, i enjoy playing with this character if the right people are around .

Thanks for the helpful input everyone. Sumo wrestling would make for some interesting builds, and i like the idea of classic monks weapons like the spade

I hope more comment!

Thanks!
