Thanks Chessy.

I just began work on the "Crafting and Economy Section" as well as the "Random Player Tips and Watching Your Own Back". Both still need some work. Changed 'article' to 'guide'. Added tidbit about recalling and SJ in the basics section. Added some underlines under titles.

If anyone wants to add more to the crafting and economy section, please do. I've been getting a bit of a block lately on that. I also want some more tips and more 'common sense' things to add.

I will add more later.

Common Sense:
If you just spent 30-45 mins getting 50 wool from the Yew sheep Pen and cant gate yet, go bank the wool, run to the gate then closest bank to your home to bring the wool home, or just use the towns loom and wheels to make your cloth.

Always check that your main Siege Blessed Item is Blessed before you leave your house. Especially if you use arm/dress macros that might pull and unblessed Item or Weapon from a box unoticed.

Ok, I know a few hot-spots that should be mentioned. I'm sure there's lots more.

First and foremost:
banks. Luna, Umbra, Skara are pretty much it. Other banks are visited seldom.

PvP/Pk/thieving. Luna is your spot.

PvM and Pks. Shame level 1, Ant cave, swoops, miasma (sometimes), melisande, citadel.

Champ spawns. Not nearly as camped as other shards, but still busy some days. Still, despise is busy and oaks can often be hopping - particularly when waka runs their oaks/harrower events.

others?

There are more PvP spots than Luna.. and believe it or not, you can find some good fights well outside the Luna guardzone! [Only applies to those who don't need the security of the GZ obviously]

You can usually find fights...

Between Spirit and Sacrifice gates in Ilsh
Homare
West Umbra road
Most player-run towns see some action as well
Despise - Hot spot because of the Rat Spawn there

Other possibilities to get some good fights going:

- Get to know the leader's and members of other guilds! Send an ICQ and set up a meeting place to throw-down. Most guilds are willing to accept an invite to some good fights.

- Utilize the boards to stake your claim to an area and invite those who wish to take it, to bring it on.

- Organize an event and announce it.. There will always be raiders no matter how lame the event is! Hold a pie cook-off for crafters and the raiders will come!
haha

Great job, Kenji.. well worded! Definately eliminates alot of the misconceptions about Siege that I've heard people use as a reason not to give it a try. *bows*

this is really on related to the stratics forums....but you might wanna add that the reason it seems like we have more egotistical trash talk on Siege is because this seems like its the only shard board that allows it....it was way worse on others till the trammies complained and now its all resticted to one thread or deleted.

I'll put something about common 'additudes' on Siege and the stratics boards as one of the later additions to the guide. Thanks for suggesting it.

Thief avoidance:

Unlike most shards, thieves actually are active and fun on siege. Almost nothing is insured or blessed, so there's actually stuff to steal. This is particularly true because many Siege members migrated here from other shards and have never learned how to avoid thieves.

There's a number of methods:
1. keep all your deathrobes, dye them black, keep your stuff in a black dyed bag in your pack, keep the pack open. Easy for you to get to, tough for a thief to find - particularly if you put the drobes on top of the pack.

2. stacking. put all your stuff in a small pouch, keep it open, but drop all your runebooks and spell books on top of it. Again, hard to find.

3. clutter. never throw away anything. thieves hate a cluttered pack.

4. trapped chests. These are awesome. Use a GM explosion tinkered chest, when locked correctly any attempt to open them causes explosion damage to the thief (or you if you aren't careful). Put your stuff in the chest, keep it open, and set it to explode (there's an essay about this on stratics, or just experiment). A GM tinkered explosion trapped chest will almost always kill a thief.

That said, if you are a thief, you'll find that very few siege players use any of these methods and, thus, are ripe for the pickings.

[/ QUOTE ]

He has good points, but then again you also have to watch out for rogues. Not thieves, rogues. A thief is somebody that runs 120 stealth, and when you see them it's because you are short one item. I play a thief. I mess around a lot, and when I steal it's silly stuff. Like I will stand in a hallway and spin around until I'm next to somebody, and then stop and be like "Hey how are you doing?", engage them in conversation while I snoop their pack. A lot of my conversations end with a random "Thanks" and me opening my bank box. It's a lot of fun to play any character type here, I'm a robbing sort of person, but a "Thug" as some people would call it. I run wrestling, and magery. So I can disarm/para blow people, and mindblast if neccesary. It's a very successful template, and I remember whining about how hard it is to raise.. it just takes risk. People talk about how blue beetles are dangerous rk'ers, because of their 40 dmg to naked people. I sat there, at 68.8 wrestling, whining and complaining about how I dont know what to kill. So I go out, get my blue beetle, and change into dog form (HP regen to recover from beetle hits), stuck out 2 mirror images, and sat there. My beetle has been killed, killed, guardwacked, and then killed some more, so hes at a pitiful 54 wrestling. Still, when you hit for 30, he can get away with that. It took me under 10 minutes to gain those last crucial points before freedom. Heheh. It takes a lot of wit, in order to figure out what to do and how to do it. Like my problem.. "How do I sit there and tank a blue beetle?" Avoid getting hit, and recover fast! People here shouldn't be stuck up veterans who are used to goleming. I came here less than a month on Pacific, and the learning curve was SOO steep. I had heard about NEW from the new 8th age Bullitans, (Yes its in an Offficial published EA Games Booklet!) and so I searched them out. Now, every time I see a new person, I ask if they have icq and somehow, forward them to NEW guild. Its a very fun shard to play and its really hard, but you need to accept the challenge and live with it. Like the trapped box comment... I carry an uncurable DP gas trapped box usually. Its just fun! You can be as crazy as you want, and do whatever you want, because it doesnt matter. You die, you res, you move on.

That is Siege.

Kenji,

I was just reading another post where someone was wanting to come to siege and was advised to find an active guild, but I can't remember anything in your thread here where the major guilds are listed.

It would be very helpful to new siege players to have a quick, one line description of the top dozen guilds along with a contact ICQ number.
I know there's something like that on the [NEW] boards.

Some that I know are:
NEW: new siege members only, guildhouse north of East Brit Bank by the mountains
TnT: Mostly good-aligned PvP/PvM guild, based in Stonehaven in the desert southwest of Umbra
OTF: Spawn raiders
VmP: vampiric killers of newbies, Based at Homare-Jima moongate
C8V: good-aligned, rp guild (not very familiar with them)
KSS: good-aligned, rp guild (not very familiar with them)
EB2: seen them around, and I've been told not to kill them. (not very familiar with them)
WAKA: based in Zento, (not very familiar with them)
CWS: (not very familiar with them)
I^A: (not very familiar with them)

Anyway, a list like this with the guildmasters ICQ would be helpful for new siege members.

I'm not quite sure how that's inaccurate...since thats VMP's main gig is killing newbies...

Come on, anyone who has 3 different runes to Jhelom farms and Yew sheep pens is a newbie killer. Plain and simple.

Just because *you* cant kill a newbie doesnt mean the *rest* of VMP doesnt do it.

Lol hello hello... Wazzock? Very interesting word you have there, Shal. ICQ me the next time you see me, I want to meet up ingame for a little get together really fast.

BTW Altho I do kill new people its all out of fun and games, because its my bare fists Versus their dagger/sword/axe/etc. ALSO I refer a lot of new people to Shalimar's guild, basically for the hope they will grow up to be good little pk'ers and give me lots and lots of counts. As of now, though, I am staying blue. Maybe in the future....

Nothing wrong with the word wazzock. On a related note, how would good pk'ers give you counts? Surely if they were good, they'd win, and if they were pk's they'd be red and not be able to give counts even if they lost, you wazzock.

[sarcasm]
Hmmm of all the Zerg guilds I'd say NEW consists of the most rude pkers

[/sarcasm]

Well personally when I started out here on Siege, I had no pbd and there was no "NEW" but that really didn't stop me. I took up the scribe-mage template so I didn't have to go high-end, did escorts and even farmed in LRC suits in the 50%'s. Although I've only pvped a few times (cause of my horrible connection) they were quite successful (as long as you know the strengths and weaknesses of your guildmates; you can often find yourself saving each other's arses). I think the most important thing on siege is "Template balancing". Mana Regenaration skills ARE needed here. Really since things have changed dramatically, any newer players should consider being an elf from the get-go just for the bonus 20 mana (to help with training, but primarily for new mages). Also Clicking the "advanced" character button isn't a bad thing I did it and got 30 wrestling to go with 50 magery and 50 eval. The second most important thing is a "Bless-worthy item" [I expect to get negative responses for this] but I have found that with 1 Item I really find personality in my template from other people. I usually equip items that further help that item. for instance when I wear lrc/mr/lmc. I bless my pendent of magi, now I can hit the 100% LRC with little trouble at all. And I usually have a collection of MR and LMC armor to equip to assist this (thus making my loot quite desirable). Usually my hunting suits are 100% LRC, MR (atleast 5) and LMC (around 20%). The last thing is don't be afraid to do what works (for you), whether that is drylooting (usually to restock your armor/jewlry or incapsitating the enemy), this might be farming for hopes of getting powerscrolls but most likely this consists of farming a few monsters to build up your gold, but just don't bank sit
"its not that cool."

Depends who you meet. I've been here for almost a year. It really depends on who you meet.

If you seem like a new character, most people will not dry loot you. However, once you gain some sort of reputation of some sort, some might be more inclined to do so.

lol, thats why community prolly needs such "mythbusting" threads: im playing myself on siege only few days, got killed many times of course, got also dry looted 1 time, but most even the killers were friendly.

1st: ur playing 4 days? what ever u could worry of being lost ? *lol*
2nd: u got that poor that even 452 gp of another player was necessary? hey, every escort gives ya 500

in sum, siege shouldnt be called a vet- or profi-shard. it should be called a shard for ppl a little more bright than the average. maybe a IQ-105 upwards shard *lol*

I get to explain to even my seasoned UO veteran friends that I play on Siege and that means hard mode. They shudder and stand in awe as I explain that my lowly bard can be ganked at any time, cannot sell to vendors, and is constantly living on the edge.
But I also have a dandy little house right outside Skara Brae, and the satisfaction of triumph over ruleset adversity.
I returned from a long UO absence to a color-coordinated wardrobe, 120 Musicianship and ABSOLUTELY nothing else. At least I retained my ostard. It takes a lot of grit to work up from square one, and though I play quite leisurely, it's been paying off.

I have been playing Siege for 4 months now, after playing on baja and LA for years.
Siege is a challenge, just to live, lol, and i really shocked my friends to think that i would like playing there.
On baja and LA i never went to Fel, it was 'the evil place', where you would die as soon as you arrived!
When i came to Siege i was surprised to meet nice reds
, and evil blues.

I have found the skills mage/hiding/stealth essential, for travel and defense. Pvp doesn't intrigue me, so i do not attack others.
My first death was in Umbra. I had taken my newb char. to train some archery, and an Orc snuck up and got me....lol. I ran back to town before he could rezz me, or ask tribute. I came back to my body, and he was still there, started at me, and a member of TnA came to my aid, fighting the Orc while i collected my stuff. He then took me to NEW, introduced me to Shal
. The fact that i had a safe place to log, and could train, have access to tools/armor made the difference, because now i have 4 chars., and log on Siege everyday. One day i would like to be a helper maybe.
Losing all my stuff, in my first Vmp dryloot upset me, but not having to pay insurance was kewl! Being a packrat by nature, i had to train myself to carry nothing in my bp, and wear a 'loot suit', so it won't hurt as much, lol. I use lrc, and the non-med seems to be everywhere, so getting more is not that big a deal. Im trying to get used to the Pvp aspect of people farming newbs, or crafters.....ones that usually are unable to put up a decent fight.
I like fights to be more balanced, so the aspect of not ever having uber armor works for me.
Being able to sell leather and cloth has been a great way to make gold.
My first response was to run in panic, now i am trying to learn the art of stealth and defense.
I have a tamer, but it is hard, as the usual taming sites are visited by campers, looking to pk.
Overall Siege is a challenge and fun.
I do go on LA sometimes and just walk around, out in the open, without fear, nice and peaceful, and i love it!
I can also go to my fav. hunting spots without fear of being pk'd and thieves stealing my stuff.
But Siege grows on you, and you find yourself just staying there more and more.
I placed a house, have put down some roots, and its all good.

I've been kicking around comming back to UO but I've been away for a long, long time (there were no expansions and Siege had just been created when I left). This means I'll be a completely new player for most intents and purposes. While I have active, fantastic memories of the Dungeon Deciet, and of getting PK'd at the Brtian crossroads my actual knowledge of the game is truly down to nothing. Add to this I've spent the last few years playing games such as DAoC, EQ2 and Vanguard my memory of UO has further eroded into what is likely a "good old days" mentality. None-the-less, my times in Ultima Online are amongst the best I ever had in online gaming.

With the new client I've decided to come back and give it another go. I've been looking around to find a good shard as I'll be starting fresh and wanted to find a place where RP seemed to be strong. I was told Europa, but remember reading that Siege had one of the strongest communities (RP and otherwise) around.

I've read thru this post and truly appreciate the time and information placed here. I'm going to be a very casual player (life itself is busy enough) but I would like to enjoy some RP and feel a kinship to other players. Is Siege the place for me or do you think, given my extremely new status, I should play a bit on a regular shard before deciding?

Something I've noticed, posting over in the other forums, is that often times the really smart people replying have something in common: they play on Siege. :-o I was curious, so I started a wee tamer the other day and today I've been reading this Siege introduction and it's great! My first days have been most adventurous and it's been like starting UO all over again.

What I would really like to know is where are the most popular hotspots. So far I've been going about my business in Delucia and barely seen a soul.

A world map (screenie of UOAM) with all the player towns would be excellent as well.

And can pets bond on this shard?
