I got a gain tonight after several failures on a unicorn near Spirituality in Ish. No combat, no danger, everyone's happy. I'm at 105.6 now. Will try it again tomorrow night.

If your lore is GM your chance to tame a unicorn is about 20% - not worth it, IMO. I'd stick with bulls or gaman (about 70% chance), ridgeback would be 45% for you or thereabouts if you want to mix it up with something tougher. I think quantity matters more than quality though, you want to get as many successful attempts in as you can during your taming period in order to get the best shot at getting gains.

My lore is GM, taming is 105.6 -- so you're saying that bulls would be better at this level? I read the taming guide in the sticky threads and it seemed like everything at my level is dangerous or hard to get to. I spent a lot of time with the bulls in Delucia pre-gm taming so I am comfortable with that.

I just scrolled taming, lore, and vet to 120 so now I'm getting serious about getting gains. At my level am I correct to expect about .1 per day gains?

Thank you for your help. There's so much to get used to since I have been away from UO for a long time. Last time I played powerscrolls were new and they didn't have them for every skill. I only played for a couple of weeks back then. I think they had just come out with the val hammers but no one on the shard had one yet. =)

Ha......I thought that might be you that I saw last night!

I get pretty decent gains off unicorns if taming skill is between 104 and 109. It seems that as long as the total of the character's real skills is under 700, my tamer usually gets between 4-6 taming gains per hour from them. Some hours that drops to just 2, of course. However, I kill the unicorns and also work on barding and magery skills while I'm running around, so it's not a complete waste of time. Horned leather is nice to have for filling BODs and donating at the library and I usually get fairly consistent peacemaking and music gains from area peacing among the spawn by the unicorns (assuming both skills are not GMd).

Hi Tina, are you on Lake Superior? My tamer is Embre deWinter and there was someone else in Ish killing the unis when I went taming the other night so that was probably me you saw. Are you saying that you get more than one gain per night in the 100s?? I just assumed that I wouldn't get more than one gain a day.

I was taking the unicorns to donate to the Moonglow zoo. Getting the leather sounds like a good idea too.

It's good to meet another LS tamer.

Yep, that was me. My tamer on LS is still pretty new...started her with 50 taming and 50 magery on December 21st of last year. She's currently got 110 lore, 110 vet, 103.6 music, 97.2 peacemaking, 90 meditation (pointed down and will drop to the 40s or 50s eventually), 88 taming, and 82.8 magery. The guild I belong to will eventually jump into factions on LS, but we got sidetracked playing on LA. So I only worked on my LS tamer for now to the point where she could get some better pets and farm enough leather to get the Birds of Britannia talisman. I take her out every other day or so to try to get some more gains. However, since I don't have a house there it's a bit of a chore to fight my packrat tendencies when I go hunting. I have three boats partially full of looted stuff (crummy LRC, jewels, paragon cooking drops, etc.) that I have to remember to refresh every few days. What a nuisance.

I prefer quantity since you won't get a gain off a fail. So something you only have a 1/5 chance to tame will only let you even have a shot at a gain once a minute. Something with 1/2 chance to tame is going to give you three shots a minute at a gain. Of course something that is harder to tame is going to be more likely to give you that gain...I guess it just depends what you prefer to do. I like gaman cause I can get out there and kill them quickly after I tame them and there are tons of them at that third gate in tokuno, just milling around.

I use the stratics taming calculator to figure out what I should be taming when. Enter your taming skill, lore skill, then selet "success 0 pretames" (for the percentages) and you can also sort by taming instead of name so you can just scroll down to where the percentages are 40-60% (what people say is typically a good range for gains).

It's a very handy calculator, and good also for estimating your chances of taming something to keep, so you know if you can get it on the first try or if you should prepare and use honor or get a friend to help or whatever.

I tend to do a combination of quantity taming of things like bulls or ridgebacks but mixing in periods when I'll work cu sidhe spawns or do zoo turnins. Mostly I do the cu's because I like finding the colours folk want and my bard gained really well in disco and voke alongside her taming there.

At 105 I'd suggest ridgebacks because you can get them in a nice pack and tame constantly during your training sessions. Then if you're like me and get bored of that, you can either just grab GGS gains or tame things like cu's (use skill jewellery) and get other rewards while you work towards the next taming gain. I think once you reach a certain skill level it can become horribly frustrating to tail ridgebacks steadily for hours, especially if your gains go dry. So don't be afraid to mix it up. Just ensure you have jewellery on, if necessary, so you can get a gain from whatever you're taming if it's higher end :)

I haven't tamed ridgebacks in a long time, but I seem to remember they give spined leather. So you might want to bring a sending bag along if you're going to tame them. Gaman (and bulls) are also great for collecting regular leather for your tailor.

Lesser hiryus in the area around the Citadel might also be an option for taking a short break from taming other stuff. The minimum taming requirement for them is 98.7. I think they drop 60 leather each, or something like that (definitely more than gamans/bulls). Definitely fun to tame for practice with lead taming and the loot on them can sometimes be decent (gold is in the 1000-1200 gp range). Be sure you go there riding a nightmare because you'll need it for killing the ninjas that sometimes pop up. And make sure the physical resist on your armor is as high as you can get it, as the hiryus have an attack that temporarily reduces your physical resistance.

I'm doing something wrong because I haven't had a gain in several days and I've been taming bulls and gamans. I rarely fail and my lore is going up a little but no taming gains. I guess I'll try ridgebacks.

I know you prolly have checked but make sure you only have the skills you want arrows pointed up. The rest I put down. In other words, make sure you have a skill point available to gain into what your trying to raise.

Other then that also try white wolfs on Ice Island as right now you have a 81.2% chance of success of taming (at 105.6). South side of the isle there are tons.

A good utility I found that helps me decide what to tame an when is Ultima Online Utility at http://www.guain.it/uoutility/

Has taming calculator among many other helpful things and as long as you can gain from it, you have a chance at a skill gain.

I always try to shoot for taming things that are around 70% or more taming success (skill gain is checked only on a successful tame) and where there are of a bunch of the same mobs clustered in the area.

Hope something in there helps.

Assuming that you've got skills set to raise (and if necessary, something pointed down) then there's an odd trick that can sometimes get you gaining again.

Have you got your stats locked? If you do, set one to increase and another to decrease and then try to tame again. I've managed to kick-start my tamers' gains by letting a stat raise during a tame attempt. I haven't used this trick in a while, but it's worth trying if you've hit a brick wall.

Stupid question: Do you have Taming jewelery on? If yes, remove it before attempting to tame.

Samantha, once my tamer's total REAL skills hit 700, I rarely get in a mood to try to tame long enough to get taming gains. However, while the total is still below 700, I put on jewelry or take off jewelry to get taming skill within the 104-109 range. Then I go tame unicorns for as long as I can stand it. So far, that 104-109 range seems to be a "sweet spot" for getting gains. I haven't really worked out the average ratio of failures to successes, but there are still a good number of failures in that range along with a lot of successes. Depending on overall real skill total, my tamer will generally get 4-6 taming gains per hour. Sometimes there are no gains for the first 20-40 minutes and sometimes you hit a lull where you get no gains for almost an hour. Just promise yourself you'll stick with it for at least 20 minutes and optimally for at least 45 minutes.

If you can manipulate the jewelry to get your taming skill into the 85-91 range, try taming gamans near the Homare-Jima gate or try white wolves on the Arctic Island. Or try bulls if taming skill is between about 87 and 92 or 93. Those seem to be the best ranges I've found for taming these three types of critters that you can find in decent quantities.

Gaman are right on the money. Safe area, mega-spawn and load up on leather.
And to for a break from the mind-numbing boredom, tame a bunch of Gaman and try to kill Kits. Does wonders for your Vet.

I'll collect the horns sometimes and use that as a taming time indicator instead of saying "half an hour" or whatever, cause I tend to play flash games while doing boring stuff, and if I'm playing a flash game I'm not taming. So that half hour might go by and I'll only have gotten in a couple dozen taming attempts. :p

So it works out well for me to say "ok I'm going to tame till I get 50 gaman horns"...etc. Keeps me movin! I'll probably turn them in for a bunch of strongbox quests later, too (along with the other needed stuff). :)

Another thought...you're very, very close to getting optimum Taming gains from Kits. So why don't you Tame kits and look for a pair of keepers? You're going to do this eventually so why not now! Tame some Gaman then some Kits. Again, this eliminates some of the boredom.

At about 117-116, go Tame Rune Beetles for gains and to find a keeper. The Rune/Kit combo puts out the most damage/second of any pet or combo that can also tank.

Lots of good feedback, I appreciate it folks. =)

Still not getting gains from gamans but I'm going to keep at it. I'm also recruiting my husband to help me since he's home all day. He's going to take my tamer out for a few training sessions during the week to spread out the boredom.

All of my stats are set to raise (just swallowed a +25), should that make a difference?

Yesterday got a few vet and lore gains while trying to keep my mare alive fighting krakens. I could actually see improvement in her fighting (less vet/healing required) as the night went on. I also got less fame =( towards the end of the night. I wonder if that means I'm getting closer to Lady??

It may not work anymore, Samantha. Or you're just unlucky. I think you've maybe just hit a brick wall for a bit. Hop around different taming areas and tame a mix of easy and harder critters and see if one gets you a gain. If you're using critters at the right skill level then it should start to gain.

As a longshot, if it keeps up for a few more days, you may want to page a GM and explain that you have other skills gaining but your taming skill hasn't gained in however many days.

Not sure what else you can try :(
