I haven't played a whole lot lately, so I'm not familiar with the current arc(s). I am interested in how the restoration of Magincia will work.
On Great Lakes, the EMs have filled in a lot more than this but I think these are the cross-shard essentials.
NOT in chronological order.
The Demon Lord named Virtuebane (who is a riff off of a character from
Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, does not wish us to rebuild Magincia. (The implication is that he was behind the original destruction of Magincia years back, and that the Shadowlords' initial attempt to use that attack to enter our world was in essence them piggy-backing on him, but I may be wrong on that. At the time it didn't matter, as the Shadowlords found a way in anyway.) Demonic magics have stalled rebuilding there.
Virtuebane has recruited humans known as the Bane Chosen, who at first appeared to be a vaguely evil human supremacist group and have since emerged as full-fledged evil demon worshipers. Virtuebane and the Bane Chosen have occupied Magincia Island. They have also been launching attacks on the cities. In an attempt to trick and divide us, his forces won't aggro on you unless you have fought them previously (thus earning a negative loyalty rating with them).
Dawn wishes to use the Crystal of Duplicity, used by Nystul to make Trammel, to break the demonic curse in Magincia so that rebuilding can take place. She brought the Crystal out of Lord British's vault, but Virtuebane's forces some months back attacked Britain to try to take it. They appear to have failed but the Crystal vanished anyway.
Virtuebane has entered our world (where the Magincia Moongate used to be, there's an evil altar and a Black Moongate), and on Great Lakes at least has been seen in-game, and one can imagine will be seen on the other shards in the near-future.
I hope I hit all the cross-shard essentials. Now join the fight by fighting Virtuebane's forces they next time they occupy a city (the town cryers will tell you).
This way, even if the actual rebuilding part of the scenario sucks (or at least is not to your liking even if it doesn't suck in objective terms), you can at least have some fun fights along the way.
