I'm new to this game and would like to know, what kind of armor can a mage without hindering spell casting ability?

No armor hinders spellcasting ability, but weapons do. You need to carry either a spellbook, or a weapon that says spell channeling on it. Same goes for shields.

Armor does however hinder your mana regeneration. You need to wear either leather, or any armor with the mage armor property at the bottom.

So, leather armour or 'mage armor property' armor does not hinder your mana regeneration? What about studded leather?

Studded leather will hinder mana regeneration. Leather, leaf (elf) and cloth (gargoyle) in addition to any armor with the "mage armor" property will not.

no armor hinders mana regeneration contrary to a rumor that's been going around. the only reason one needs 'mage armor' is to actively use meditation. even passive usage is unaffected by non-mage armor.

Spell casting ability and mana regeneration are different things.

No armor limits your ability to cast a spell. (If I'm wrong, someone please enlighten me!)

For mana regeneration.

You have a "natural" mana regeneration rate. You can also regain mana with the skills Meditation and Focus (which is also known as "Battle Focus").

Most armor other than leather does interfere with your natural mana regeneration, but not severely. It also interferes with the mana regeneration grated by the Meditation skill, severely. It does not interfere with mana regeneration grated by the Focus skill.

However, if your armor has the "mage armor" property, it will not interfere with Meditation or with your natural mana regeneration rate, regardless of what type of armor it is.

Armor that does not interfere with the Meditation skill is called "meddable." Armor that does interfere with the Meditation skill is called "non-meddable."

Leather armor should never have the mage armor property (it used to have that property sometimes, due to a bug but they eventually fixed it), because it's naturally meddable.

This is, as far as I know, not right.

As far as I know, "passive" Meditation is interfered with by non-meddable armor.

If I'm wrong I'm positive someone else will correct me and confirm that you were right.

I'm pretty sure that it's only passive meditation derived from the meditation skill. Someone with no med skill (including any from JOAT) would not notice a difference in their passive regeneration rate but someone with any skill invested in meditation would. So, for a mage (who most likely has some meditation) medable armor would be a good idea. :)

this is not true, putting on a piece of non med armor, such as a plate or studded armor without the mage armor property makes it so your base mana regen from meditation is dropped to 0..

every 10 pts of meditation is supposed to give you passive 1 mana regen...

it doubles active.

so gm (100) is 10 mana regen passive, 20 active.

you can also add to mana regen with focus, but its 20 per, so gm (100) is 5. or you can add mana regen properties..
(this is why humans have 3 mana regen by default)

focus, or armor properties is not affected by armor types.. but does not have an active mode.

the formula for mana regen is based off intelligence (the more you have the faster you regen) and has a diminishing return.. (you will get to a point to if you add more mr it wont regen any faster)

Incorrect ... from a scribes standpoint and Meditation skill.

Any armor other than leather only or "mage armor" will affect Meditation passive and active gains. Mana gains from Focus are not affected at all.
