I dont feel like spending 250,000 a bolt if it isnt. Some guy si running around Luna on Chesapeake selling it like nuts. Also selling peices like cloaks for 100,000 gold.

They even have a sheild dyed that color. The kite one with the four boxes.

Yes it is legal to buy it is part of a japenese shard event where they get to search for these slimes that dye clothe the old aos colors and they can dye as many bolts as they want until the timer goes down.

I wish they would do that on american shards. :sad4:

Just found a rune at brit bank on atlantic and checked the vendor...someone selling them for 50k per bolt but selling 10 bolts for 325k...250k sounds like robbery...I'll just stick with the regular and reward colors...the AOS ones are kind of ugly anyway...

Blame other players for the event on the asian shards. When people made cloth out of the AoS clothing a few asshats complained...and whala...a new event was born.

Simple. Their playerbase didn't sue the company and win for not getting PAID for VOLUNTEER work. This is being run by their seers and such.

We have nobody to blame but the idiots that did that here. Personally, I think the ones that brought up the lawsuit should be banned for life from UO for the trouble and pain they've caused.

It wouldn't mater if they sued or not It is The Program was Illegal to US labor laws. You can Volunteer for a non profit but the last time I checked Ea is a for profit corporation. The same thing happen to AOL too they lost their volunteer program.

I tend to think the asian market is a loophole that allows EA to work around certain issues in the game. Right now the asian shards are getting alot of travellers, and I cant think of any marketing scheme more potent getting people to crosshard atm. (think of the # of transfer tokens that are being used for people to get the cloth)

In regards to the lawsuits, just take a gander at why it happened. Only in America will you find the amount of greedy individuals whom feel compelled to be paid for something they volunteer for. (If anyone wishes to debate this fact please take time to become learned on the matter first, with a bit of study you will find yoruself without reason for debate.)

but remember the cloaks?
i bought one of the nerfed cloaks in good faith only to have it turned into a healer robe when EA decided it 'wasnt legal afterall'
this cloth could turn out to be the same cold duck

Its too bad really. If it werent for greed in this country brought on by commercialism there would be no need for such laws. (part of the catch 22 in this is the company was trying to make more money by not having to pay for the program. So the laws did what they should by protecting the private citizen. stupid greedy company *sighs* )

And if nobody had said anything, it would probably still be here today. Generally, if someone doesn't point such things out specifically, nobody ever notices... and UO is niche enough to not be noticed. Or are you implying that the government is suddenly attentive to problems like this within US companies? :dunce:

Honestly, i'd rather still have the volunteer program.

Dude, supply and demand. If only one is available the demand for it makes 60 mil a fair price. Thanks to EA the supply became unlimted, no harm no foul (in thier eyes they were fixing an *issue* in the game)

As with anything else in the game the market is very volitile, one day you have a blue shroud and vine cords....the next you have a monk robe and jesus boots.

EA's approximate stance on the enriched content and support on Asian shards..

There is nothing stopping you from transferring your characters to an Asian shard, aside from the obvious language barrier and ping issue. However, as Electronic Arts is not legally liable for your geographic location or linguistics, kindly go suck an egg.

I wonder why Japanese seers, et al, aren't permitted to 'volunteer' on western shards. Does the law apply to the geographic location of the server box? If so, their internet legislation's stuck in the early 1990's.

I wonder, could EA employ someone for an hour a week? Anything they do beyond that could be undeclared overtime.

Maybe they could work for tips like waitresses etc..

Maybe EA could just give extra powers to a number of event-oriented people and say "go nuts".

...*sigh*

I agree... it's tarded to think I can't volunteer for something I WANT to volunteer for and I would willingly do WITHOUT pay...... So your telling me that by helping out and VOLUNTEERING to help the victims of the floods here in the Mid-west that's illegal??????? Perhaps some jerk from the government should come here and arrest the dozens and dozens of volunteers here in the area helping flood victims?????? Idiotic.....

And I don't see how missing out on fun activities in game because some lazy good for nothing thinks he should be getting paid when no one else really cared is good for the game..... ...... Personally I think it has done FAR more harm than good to the UO experiance to do away with the councilors and seers. I can't see any harm in it...... and don't tell me how bad it is that someones not getting paid to do it....... LOOK at the GM's they are getting Paid to be worthless for the most part.... they are paid employees and they don't know Jack about UO...... nor do they even CARE about the game... the big difference is that the volunteers did it cause they CARED and they TRUELY loved and enjoyed the game... most of the current paid employees especially the GM's don't care about the game... they care about making their wage. So chew on that for awhile.

That lawsuit was yet another in a long line of pathetically stupid lawsuits that seem to crawl their way through the US justice system with great regularity. I'm betting in the end the people that brought on the lawsuit got virtually nothing out of it, and lost a year or two of their life that they will never get back.

The only ones that win, are the lawyers, for both sides. They get payed to play the justice system like a slot machine, and they ALWAYS get payed...

Actually, iirc, it was a parent that noticed their not-legal-to-be-working-child doing it, and it cause a couple of red herring flags to go up.

In the way it was done all those programs were bad.

I am glad they are gone and wish they were never around to begin with.

I dont see why everyone is upset. The Players and the people who were the ones doing events and helping were the ones that destroyed the program and destroyed Ultima Online because they wanted to teach a big company a lession and they should get paid...they coulda just quit being a counselor...but NOOOO they were greedy and helped ruin the community.

Sept. 21, 2000 | Catherine Reab (aka "Terendil") says she was logging up to 40 hours a week in Ultima Online, one of the Web's most popular online role-playing games, where druids and dragons wander the lands of Britannia looking for adventure. But Reab, 46, wasn't actually playing the game -- instead, she was volunteering as a community leader, answering questions and offering guidance to the game's many newbies. It was, she claims, basically a full-time job.

She had spent nearly two years working her way through Ultima Online's counselor program until she made it to the top position of regional lead counselor, managing a team of 90. As one of the 14 top "volunteers" in the program, she received a monthly $500 "thank you" and a free Ultima account.

But those days are over. Now Reab is suing Origin Systems, the creator of the Ultima Online game, and its publisher, Electronic Arts, claiming that Ultima exploited its volunteers, using free help to run what was essentially an extensive customer service program. Along with two other former counselors, she filed a class-action suit Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Colorado asking for compensation for her time. As her lawyer, James Schmehl, puts it, "This is not about people who are real volunteers, it's about people who are employees, but are called volunteers."

According to the legal filings, there are about 500 members of the Ultima Online volunteer program, and over the past three years thousands of players have participated. Volunteers are required to log a minimum of six hours a week in specified two-hour shifts, answering newbie questions and giving guidance to other players. In return for their time, the volunteers would receive free player accounts and special gizmos and gadgets for their game characters -- such as glowing wands or special robes that would make their characters stand out in the game. (These rewards were abruptly terminated last month, sending counselors into a furor.)

Donating a few hours of your time to an ego-affirming pastime is one thing, but 40 hours a week? "People did counseling because they loved doing what they were doing -- a love of the game, helping the players, the community and a feeling of family," explains Reab. "It changed from that to being a job -- with schedules and work hours, and people being fired and favoritism and all those things." She was angry when she felt unappreciated, burned out and had her feelings hurt. The reasons for her departure from the program earlier this year remain murky.

With the lawsuit, she says, she wants to show the world that "any industry cannot take advantage of a group of people who have a passion" -- and that companies like Origin Systems that gross $25 million annually shouldn't take advantage of faithful fans who will work salary-free.

While there may be merits to Reab's argument that Ultima Online took advantage of its dedicated community to build an unpaid customer service staff, it's also fair to ask what volunteers do to themselves. Did Ultima coerce Reab into spending 40 hours a week working, or was that merely the result of her own obsession with the game and love of the community? After all, no one forces a volunteer to volunteer -- it's easy enough to walk away if you don't want to do the work. And in fact, according to the legal documents, most counselors spent less than four months in the program

I`ll bet she never had a gun to her head forcing her to play. She knew what she was working towards the whole time.I`d say a free gamming acc and 5 billz a month for playing a freekin game is more than enuff compensation for a volenteer.

Peaple like that is exactly whats wrong with our legal system in this country.Well and the ambulance chaser lawyers that handle BS cases like this.:lame:

That is such a freaking cop-out. If they paid these people minimum wage for a few hours a month (it doesn't take that much longer than a few hours) things would be fine. Not to mention, there is no reason they can't program this in when they do an expansion.

EA uses a lot of excuses to get around the real issue which is they treat the US players like crap simply because they think we will continue to pay them anyways, and in the past and present we are paying them.

Yes because one was illegal made by an exploit using a certain imprisoned doggie, and the other is transfered from a shard where it is a perfectly legal item. If they were going to decide that items that were transfered weren't legal they would have done something about hooded robes of umbra by now.

Sure its relatively worthless now.. but it all depends on how bad someone wants an item, how much theyre willing to pay, how much of the item exist, which servers the cloth are xfered to.. general guestimate, 5-25k / bolt...

*edit*

Or instead of looking for the AoS slimes, you could have gone after the Mare one..

I went over, and had the most fun Ive had in ages, what a blast.

The camraderie was huge, the Japanese were truley lovely to me, and I enjoyed the 10 days I spent there.

I then loaded up the scooner, despite rough seas, and followed the trade route homeward.

Upon landing, I set up shop selling my lovely rare silks, @ 100k and less a bolt.

Totally legal, and some is really lovely.

Why charge so much.- 2 Transfer tokens, and the cost of the bare bolts- 25m to get there , sail back, and get the bolts

Also several hours of dying and trying thru the lag

Well worth it...

Just made a char on Mizuho.. and i havent gotten my 7th slot yet.. so i have to get an xfer token, 7th slot, and increased storage. And free cloth too. So far spent 0... but still waiting on that $300 stimuli check thats supposed to solve all of our problems, and create world peace.

Shoulda just skinned sheep in the Yew pen, and keep it in dyed balls of yarn. Can use 4 normal colored balls of yarn, and the 5th ball is the color of your choice when making the bolts...

That cloth wont make AOS clothing any less valuable because the AOS clothing is blessed and thats why most people wear it (i know thats why i do). Sure will make it easier to put an outfit together though.

I remember the whole volunteer mess and i thought it was a damn shame. A volunteer is supposed to give their time because they want to and if they can't give the time required then they shouldn't do it. These people could have simply said no when asked to work more hours and someone else would have came along and happily said yes. Instead, they logged the hours and then sued for compensation forcing the company to hire them. Do you think people who volunteer at children's hospitals and summer camps should be paid too? Volunteering is about caring enough about the cause to give your time. Of course they had schedules...They couldn't have 10 people working on thursday and noone around to help on weekends.

I think they messed up when they gave her the $500. It was a nice gesture but they put monetary value on her service and i think this is what made her get greedy and decide to ask a lawyer. I'm pretty sure the lawyer took it from there (dirty little boogers they are).

reply (sic) you are not allowed to be racist. The russians aren't getting it are they? Isn't that asia too? Yeah, the (rising sun) shards are and have been consistently making up their own rules and doing events stuff their own way, and robbing us blind. That's way beyond the devs or anyone else we know's ability to do anything about, its straight out EA in Japan doing whatever the heck they want to.

Is EA is geting paid for you to play?
Well getting bonus's ingame for something you would do anyway??? From the sounds of it some folk were getting paid.... granted it wasn't a big fat paycheck.. but they got a free subsciption..... so how was EA profiting there??? Now they make all profit from it cause folk like myself still volunteer to help young players...... we just don't get any bonus for doing so other than the sense of community that you get when you help another person... and there isn't any quality support for young players anymore.... Hum... and the game is quite complicated and confusing..... and they haven't put out a REAL players guide in YEARS.... the one at uo.com is a joke to say the least..... so you wonder ..... WHY would anyone pick up UO and start playing ...... just out of the blue..... they wouldn't..... how could they??? At least when I started I knew NO one in game.... but I started durring Ren.... and there wasn't much help at all then but at least I got a nifty book to help me out. In my opinion.... UO is dying because it's not possible for anyone who has NO knowledge of the game to actually figure it out without the support of the community... certainly they aren't going to get it from EA/UO... I did the new player quests.... and certainly if I hadn't already KNOWN how to play the game.... I probably would have gotten very frustrated in the lack of help and quit... seriously... And as far as the events of late go they stink.....

The Vanguard pops at a very predictable time..... it takes less than 30 seconds for ONE person to wipe out the vanguard spawn and all.... so anyone arriving 20 seconds late may as well forget it..... Seers and councilors added to the community sense of the game.... they provided things to the shards that was unique...... I think it's total BS that the asian shards get FAR better service for a game that's based here in the states...... I have a major gripe about that..... My feeling is if your not allowed to do stuff like that here then you shouldn't be getting away with it there...... AND if your going to give them preferential treatment because you can over there.... then there should be NO transfers from there to here.... or vice versa!... as well..... you if you don't physically LIVE where they get that service you shouldn't be able to LOG in there either.... AS I feel that all this special treatment for the Asian shards just plain stinks....

I also think your argument over the labor laws and all that is total BS... that's the lamest bunch of BS I've ever heard...... LIke the fool woman who sued McDonalds cause she got burned from hot coffee....... HELLO!!!!! It's coffee!!!! WTF did she think it would be COLD??????? ICED??? Of course it was HOT .... DUH!..... now I have to put up with increased costs so some lawyer can get paid millions of dollars to put stupid idiot comments all over all the stuff I buy incase I'm too big of a braindead idiot to figure out that coffee is HOT.....

My opinion of the court system in this country has not improved over the years and I'm of the opinion that soon the only ones that will be able to afford a home or a car are the lawyers.... as the rest of america will be too busy working and paying through the nose to buy things that are covered in warning lables for the mentally challenged as we all seem to be..... Perhaps I should have the lawyers explain to me why the sky is blue and the grass is green... and maybe they should put warning lables on the sides of hills incase I might not know that I could fall there....... Perhaps there should be signs up at every intersection telling me when it's "Safe" to walk as I might be too stupid to know when to safely cross the road????

Most gamers know they will have to adapt to a new user interface every time they pick up a new game/old game. The only way to know a game is to play the game. Just saying:]

The price is what ever the economy will suport. I myself took the time to go on these servers myself and stock up but took it a step farther. I killed my char 300 times and split the death robes then took those and slimed them. Now I have a stock pile of rare color death robes all blessed and ready to go. Even did it on Mugen. I have been able to get 300k a robe on a couple shards. I am thinking some more rare colors may bring me more. So far I have sold to only ppl I know so thus can not speak for the public demand.

That would have been extremely hard given many of the locations the slime was placed. There would be no way to transport and dye that many bolts or even yarns. Granted I can think of one location where that would have been possible.
