I'm not against implementing the races from origional ultima, but maybe fix the ones we have first? even elves still dont work right....

I think it would be nice to further customize the races we already have. It is a bit silly that my melee fighter is as thin and weak looking as my caster. I would also like to see more available hair styles and skin tones, including horn styles as well.

I've had many a conversation with daemons. I know they have always been a big part of the bestiary in Ulitima. Maybe its time to unlock that cage!

Personally, I think sometimes a monster needs to stay a monster. The advantage here, is obviously that they have the models already in existance. The issue I have boils down to this:

If you are going to do it, do it right or just fix what's already there. Right now, I'm really leaning towards the 'fix what's already there' side of things....

In the interim, here are a few things that might work instead:

  1. Implement a 'home town race' advantage (If your home town is Britain, you get +5 to your Barding Skills max (up to 105), but -5 to Mining/Blacksmithing/Tinkering (95 Max) or if you are from Minoc, you get +5 max to your Mining/Blacksmithing/Tinkering but get a -5 to your Lumberjacking/Carpentry/Bowcraft.).
  2. Make certain skin tones and hair styles proprietary to starting in certain cities, or declaring your home town (i.e. - Trinsics have swarthy skin and black or brown hair; Yewians have red or blonde hair and are fair complected; etc.)

Once again, use what you have! Make it better and stop adding junk to the game!

This would work especially well if you guys would PLEASE get rid of Haven!

I wasn't an early Ultima game player. I didnt even get into the series until Renassance. After that I got into the the lore of the game so I can only speak of what I have read. But it does appear that elves were a playable race up until Ultima III.
Its been brought up every time elves got talked about that that RG made a conscious decision to remove them from Ultima lore because he wanted Ultima to have its own identity.

Yes there were there, but once Ultima started to have its own real identity they were removed.

That said... RATMEN!

yes:

humans and elves that aren't ugly.

for both races the women look fine but the men are some tragic casting call from an early 80s drug crime drama that never made it all the way through its second season. Please, please, please, before we develop new heights, skin tones, and appendage compliments for an as-yet undiscovered race, let's focus on making some faces that aren't turned away at castle british for offending refined sensibilities. If we don't drop the bottom out of the face-mask market, the bottom will drop out of the reproduction rate. Maybe that's why sosaria shares its birth/death rates with Vatican City; we're all too ugly too reproduce.

If there MUST be a new race, please let its new racial skill be plastic surgery, because no world has known so many ugly men since chernobyl.

We have a number of playable races beyond those that receive racial bonuses; i.e. elf, human, gargl. There is the mage polymorph spell, though the items that grant orc and goblin form are more versatile in that magery is not required.

Orcs can be played with the polymorph spell, big majik flippers, or the various helms and armor pieces.

Anyone can be a golbin with either the ring or fishing pole available in the underworld through a quest.

Lizardmen and ratmen are available through polymorph.

Given imbuing it should be simple to add 90ish magery to almost any template. If your template is so tight that you can't add those points, you probably pick your race based on bonuses given rather than the RP aspect.

So to sum up: No, I think we are fine.

I vote for golems as playable race.
Also they should have a hive mind!

I would love to see this introduced. My only thought is how would they look different than the gargs we already have? Also would there be a new skill or two to go along with the new races?

Lizardmen and ratmen are available through polymorph.
You cant poly into a ratman. Also, polymorph puts you at a sever disadvantage of not being able to move on a mount or at mounted speed, and it demands that you spend a good deal of points in magery.

How about you let us be Sheep...oh wait, too late ;)

Hahaha. But Orcs, I think, are long overdue. Would be cool to play Orcs as they are in game, and not a new look like the Gargoyles were, and had to be, to work.

Actually, due to numerous advantages that made sense to add to compensate for the lack of Garg arties, we are awash in Gargoyles at the moment.

Due to no fault of the player, unfortunately most look like guys in clown suits and, when in war mode, look like dogs taking a leak.

I just can't follow them into battle without laughing and it's difficult for me to take them seriously. Why don't we give them *something* that provides them a bit of dignity before moving onto creating other races? At least allow them a mount if they choose so they're not hovering there all the time looking ridiculous.

Finally, is it my imagination or are nearly all player gargs male? If it's not, then something must be done to make the gargoyle more appealing to female UO players.

Still work to be done on what we have in other words.

;)

I think there is no need to say "it would be better to deal with bugs and other stuff before to go any further with the game". Not because it is implied but because we all know that those problems won't be solved AND we won't get anything of what we ask for.

My theory is that they do listen to the community requests, it is just a different community than the one that happens to meet here or in other known forums. That very community has no problems and asks for new things that noone really cares about. I still have to find proofs though.

if any more are added I feel it should be orcs they should have been the first added if any at all.
Exactly. People have been roleplaying Orcs in UO since it launched. There used to be a guild on Napa a long time ago that RPed as Orcs, and they wore Orc Masks and Ring Mail.

Maybe if female garg spellbooks looked like this:
