OMG its impossible! lol I don't mind a tough skill to gain, but come on! I unraveled 3 bags full of t-map (lvl 3) loot and got less than a full point of gains. Now thats sad.

I just came back to UO after a long (2yr) break. Man, I've missed so much! I feel like I'm never going to catch up.

Anyone have any advice on how to gain imbuing better? I am seriously about to give it up.....

what skill lvl imbuing are you at?

1st tip:

reroll that character and start at 50 skill. its slow and expensive enough of a skill that those few pts are worth just putting it on another character to start at 50. you could always use an accelerated gain quest if there is one, however new char at 50 would be fastest.

2nd tip:

play in the enhanced client and download the copper_enhanced mod. it tells you items' weight so you only loot what you need to, and don't haul off bags of junk you don't need.

3rd tip:

determining what lvl loot you need so you don't haul around a bag of junk which won't help you gain: when you go to imbue something, set the intensity of the mod such that the skill required is 50% (or as close as possible). now look on the right corner of the gump where it says item weight: x/500 (or 450 if its non exceptional). that 'x' is the item weight where you have a 50% chance for skill gain. 50% is the sweet spot for unraveling. let's say that number is 179. you should use the copper_enhanced mod and only loot items which are 179+ weight. keep in mind as you move upwards in skill you will need higher and higher weight items to have a 50% chance to gain from unraveling. right now im at around 114 skill so to unravel i need 320+ weight items, which are fairly rare.

4th tip:

when you get to higher lvls you will need to hunt higher lvl creatures such as miasma, swoop, barracoon, etc. but for now the good news is you probably dont need anything too high level to have a chance at the appropriate weight items to unravel for skill gain.

5th tip:

the best items to look for to unravel which will have highest weight will be weapons and jewelry, due to all the high and full intensity mods. rarely armor will be worth keeping, and its heavy anyway.

6th tip:
you can unravel to high levels of imbuing. i unraveled to GM skill. BUT it took a while. i would unravel a bag of 60 items and gain .2 or .3 if i was lucky. this is not a fast nor cheap skill to gain. if you want to gain faster you can switch to actively training it, although it will cost more. my suggestion is to hunt stuff you have fun at, selectively take only the items you can best gain from, and just dump them in locked down bags. every now and then log on your imbuer and unravel the bags. when you can't gain quick any more, switch to active imbuing. i still collect and unravel bags of loot for a free gain here or there, though

You could do this method...
http://vboards.stratics.com/1645804-post118.html

Or Basara has an imbuing faq somewhere with a variation of the unravel method and has further guidance above the 70 level.

I would not restart a character, but a human and elf will gain the fastest with lower level loot compared with the gargoyle. Imbuing takes a significant time investment and resource.

You can also save only items that weigh 1 stone. This allows you to gather more. If you clean your bag out you will hold more items too.

Found it got it great tool!

Also no I wouldnt start a new char. I used my dexxer on a beetle to maximize loot each trip, then dropped it all at house for my elf to unravel......now am 120 but yes it is a time consuming skill to raise but WELLLLLL worth it

Someone said something about only grabbing specific loot.. i just worked the skill from 30 - 56 or so and I would tend to dissagree. take EVERYTHING. Low end, high end, take it all. You WILL get gains from unravelling, plus you will get residue(or essence, once you're above 45) that you can then use to gain by imbuing.

It's what i've been doing to train the skill. Run a lvl 3 map on my T-Hunter, take *every*single*peice* of loot, give it to my artificer, unravell it ALL and gain(unless there happens to be something i like.. then i keep it).. use the residue/essense to imbue stuff and gain more. Im finding it highly effective, and im at 56 now. Still low, i know.. but im gaining at a usefull rate.

As for imbuing... youl want your rate of success high 50's low 60's for optimal gain. Hit dispel on weapons is cost effective because Ambers are cheap. Don't buy them in brit or Luna.. buy them in one of those towns that ppl dont go to. much cheaper! for armor ive been using reflect phys... citrines are relatively cheap too. Spam reimbue last until it tells you that you cant learn much anymore.. then unravel, and pick a new item.

Hope this helps!

I think you misunderstood.

At low skill lvl you mentioned you will gain off everything so you take literally everything

At high skill level if you are still taking everything you will haul bags and bags of things home which give you no opportunity for skill gain. Waste of time when you can bring home a bag of things GUARANTEED to cause a skill check, and still get imbuing resources too.

How is it a waste of time? YOU NEED the residue unless you want to take months to raise this skill to 120.....I used up 19k residue raising my skill to 120. Going for just "high" level loot to unravel will mean spending tons on residue.

Well if any of you are on Atlantic i have like 145'000 residue from burning runic hammers trying to get 100% elememntals that im never likely to use if you want some to help you train PM me.

P.S if anyone one has some residue or essence on europa / great lakes / napa or baja (or any other server really) we can to a swap my atlantic for yours.

Thanks

Go farm creatures that are easy to kill and drop higher end loot.

Swoop and Thrasher top my list. But, basically any creature which drops good loot.

Pack your house full. Then unravel the loot. I was still gaining off that loot when I was 100+ skill.

My vendors on Baja stock these. It's (named Vespatorium) right next to the inn at the western entrance to Vesper. They do sellout quite often though.
