1st tip:
reroll that character and start at 50 skill. its slow and expensive enough of a skill that those few pts are worth just putting it on another character to start at 50. you could always use an accelerated gain quest if there is one, however new char at 50 would be fastest.
2nd tip:
play in the enhanced client and download the copper_enhanced mod. it tells you items' weight so you only loot what you need to, and don't haul off bags of junk you don't need.
3rd tip:
determining what lvl loot you need so you don't haul around a bag of junk which won't help you gain: when you go to imbue something, set the intensity of the mod such that the skill required is 50% (or as close as possible). now look on the right corner of the gump where it says item weight: x/500 (or 450 if its non exceptional). that 'x' is the item weight where you have a 50% chance for skill gain. 50% is the sweet spot for unraveling. let's say that number is 179. you should use the copper_enhanced mod and only loot items which are 179+ weight. keep in mind as you move upwards in skill you will need higher and higher weight items to have a 50% chance to gain from unraveling. right now im at around 114 skill so to unravel i need 320+ weight items, which are fairly rare.
4th tip:
when you get to higher lvls you will need to hunt higher lvl creatures such as miasma, swoop, barracoon, etc. but for now the good news is you probably dont need anything too high level to have a chance at the appropriate weight items to unravel for skill gain.
5th tip:
the best items to look for to unravel which will have highest weight will be weapons and jewelry, due to all the high and full intensity mods. rarely armor will be worth keeping, and its heavy anyway.
6th tip:
you can unravel to high levels of imbuing. i unraveled to GM skill. BUT it took a while. i would unravel a bag of 60 items and gain .2 or .3 if i was lucky. this is not a fast nor cheap skill to gain. if you want to gain faster you can switch to actively training it, although it will cost more. my suggestion is to hunt stuff you have fun at, selectively take only the items you can best gain from, and just dump them in locked down bags. every now and then log on your imbuer and unravel the bags. when you can't gain quick any more, switch to active imbuing. i still collect and unravel bags of loot for a free gain here or there, though
