Housing: What if ...

Housing – more than 1 per account – anywhere!

This is a dusted-off version of something I suggested long ago for multiple housing. I’m updating it to address more issues than originally put forth.

I've recently noted there have been more voices in the "more housing" wish list. Maybe it can work, maybe not.
= = =
Premise:
Each account is entitled to a housing allotment of 2048 tiles for housing.

All units are auto-refresh - even grandfathered ones.

Buying a plot:
Whatever plot you lay down, the overall footprint must be less than or equal to the remaining tiles in your housing allotment. A castle is 31x31 or 961 tiles.

Demolish a house:
The number of tiles for the plot are returned to the allotment tally.

Selling the house:
The buyer must have at least the number of tiles needed for the plot in their allotment. Once the deal is completed, the buyer loses the number of tiles and the seller regains them (like a demolish).

So what does this gain us?
Total allotment of 2048 is the same as 2 castles and perhaps a 10x12 or 11x11 … with just a few left over. Or how about 41 7x7 houses?

If you want to, place housing on multiple shards … the allotment of tiles is on the account.

EXAMPLES:
A non-grandfathered account with 1 18x18 on it would look like this:
Total Tiles Allowed: 2048
Total Tiles Used: 324
Tiles Remaining: 1724
Grandfathered: N

Grandfathered accounts with usage over the allotment has zero as remaining balance. If these are sold off or demolished the account allotment will show zero until the remaining structures tally 2048 or less in size.

A grandfathered account with a castle, keep, 2 large w/patio and a tower has a total of 2153 tiles used:
Total Tiles Allowed: 2048
Total Tiles Used: 2153
Tiles Remaining: 0
Grandfathered: Y

Selling or demolishing 1 Large w/patio unit would then reduce tiles used by 196 leaving a total used of 1957, total tiles remaining of 91. This is sufficient for a 10x9 custom plot later.

Changes needed?
REFRESHING:
As stated before, ALL housing (including grandfathered) would be auto-refreshed.

Balance Remaining:
As the account age is in the paperdoll scroll, the remaining allotment could be shown there as well.

Determine Usage:
Housing server could execute a nightly routine that gathers the account and tally of used plot tiles. I make the following assumptions:
1. It knows the house is grandfathered or not, so flag can be set. Else how does it know you need to refresh the house or not?
2. It knows a plot size because the initial funds were deducted from the bank!

As a result it can supply the tiles used and grandfather flag as shown above.

Gains & Losses:
We all gain the ability to have more than one house – on any shard.

For large open areas (Malas??) there is a possibility of having your own little town.

Those who currently refresh their homes will not need to do so.

Storage space entitlements should carry to each unit owned.

Malas should still retain the no castle or keep rules.
= = =
It's not perfect, but is it workable? If implemented, would YOU be satisfied with what you could do?

Naa.. if you want more houses, support the game and go get more accounts.

It's a good idea but 2048 base is too high.

It could be more something like base 1024 + bonus for account age / booster / etc...

that's something I toyed with, but then how much upgrade and so forth. This way is a flat - everyone has the same. Storage upgrades already in place/bought can apply though.

This would be negated immediately by EA just allowing us more than 1 unit per account. <shrug> Step 1 - allow more than 1 unit per account; Step 2 - set ALL units in-game to auto-refresh.

I'd rather the amount be exactly 31x31=961 tiles, unless castles are actually 32x32, at which point: 1024. Whatever is required to ensure that if you have a castle, you are tapped out.

Objectives:
Those who have multiple units keep them.
Those who want them can have them (your 961 allows this too).
The newest newb is thew same as the oldest year Vet - no ummm, housing envy.

As was suggested, buy-ups in housing etc could be done, but then you start a have/have-not disparity. Thus some grousing here or elsewhere. All with same prevents/alleviates that.

My only reasoning for going more than the castle-at-best level was I have seen some castles where the owner could REALLY use more storage. Highly decorated and a packrat owning the place.

I'm pondering the alternative that are here and hopefully will be here. Oh, size and calcs are based on numbers in the Stratics housing guide for master build table. That's where I got 31x31 for castles.

I would love to, however I do not have unlimited funds with which to do so. Nor do others ... this is the offered alternate method I devised.

Yup - and I took that plus ideas I had formulated some time back ... massaged them into this monster. I guess I want to see if a majority could accept or even work with it.

Your cash in-flow is an issue I'd like to tackle outside of this one, though.

I like the idea. For those worried about not supporting the game, what about selling it as an upgrade like the 7th character slot? How about as a mini booster?

Kinda what i just said here..
http://vboards.stratics.com/uhall/240496-more-than-one-house-per-account.html

But it not gonna happen if for no other reason than they dont want to devote ANY manpower to a project that they wont see immediate return in $$$$$$$$$
Unless were part of the next booster they sell. I have an account I haven't purchased High Seas for and I can't step onto a new boat with any of my chars. I can see them and all, but can't use them or use any of the artifacts dropped in HS. A similar thing could happen to turn on a housing footprint.

Personally, I think 2048 is too high as well. :)

Agreed that 2048 is way too high.

Also, I agree with those that cant see this ever happening even with a booster charge for it. I keep a second account for the housing and if they did this i wouldnt need it ... I would end up closing it and they would lose money. They wont make that mistake.

This will never happen, ever. Its pretty obvious that this would lead to a reduction in revenue. My guess is somewhere around 10k accounts. This is as bad an idea is privatizing parking meters in Chicago. Only a fool would jump over a dollar to pick up a dime.

I'd condense my current houses onto my main account, but that wouldn't stop me from using the other one. Set up more storage and it would be really cool not have to face indecisive moments if I came across an interesting housing location.

While we are on the topic of things that will never happen:

On Friday im gonna go win the megamillions on buy the IP for the entire Ultima Franchise. Then im gonna go around take all the true rares I can find locked down, because those are not your pixels... they are mine !

Also I want this game to be more family oriented, so im gonna go buy the rights to the Smurfs and soon we will have blue midgets running around sosaria. Swordsmanship and Magery will be replaced with rose picking and bunny dressup day. Any text that doesnt read" I love the smurfs" will result in an instant ban

Then im gonna go marry Kaley Cuoco and Katy Perry. Then im gonna join the Green Bay Packers just to run up to Aaron Rodgers and kick him in the nuts and yell" Get some sun you zombie, YOU LOOK LIKE A HEROIN ADDICT" Then im gonna buy my way onto a good football team, such as the DAAAAAAAA BEAAAAAAARS

Will never happen EA/UO would lose to much money from accounts closing.

Run around Atlantic and then think about the plan. There wouldnt be a spot open on the shard.

It would be abused like crazy, thats alot of 7x7 blockers per acct.

UO would lose Money.

It is an excellent idea...perhaps scale back to housing tiles a bit ;)

I don't see this as lowering accounts to be honest. Not everyone places a house just because of size. Many like myself prefer old school locations and sacrifice storage for a good location (rather than placing a house in the Malas suburbs)

It may also allow homes to be created on other shards and allow people to branch out a bit

Your sorta arguing with yourself here, If you were allowed a certain amount of tiles then you could place more than one house in old school/good locations. So where you might have had 3 accts holding 3 houses you could now hold 3 houses on one acct. Therefore less accts needed.

I would Imagine house holding accounts for at least 10% of the money UO makes and that could be much higher. I curently have 1 of 3 active accts just holding my castle and then I open 2 more every 3 months. So 50% of my accts are to hold houses and that equals about 35% of the money I pay a year to UO is for extra housing. I know alot of other people do this too, and prolly some to a greater extent than me.
