But considering how bleak your numbers make things appear, it should give them good incentive to fix it fast. :)

Yeah well if it's anything like me who complained about having a fix for all hacks using a simple p2p interface and people saying, WELL CONTACT EA, What are you waiting for ?!

Well... here I am, even when I was working for EA as a companion they wouldn't even LOOK at it. It was coded AND ready to go (yes might have required some cleanup but it was functional).

And yes I developped it by reverse engeneering the bad third party program that we must not name, but it was working, and with 2-3 players connected in p2p we could spot EVERY user of this program instantly.

And strangely it's not that I'm unpopular... my old timers thread on the atlantic boards scored over 14k views... that is twice as much as the most viewed thread (exept the picture thread of course since ppl are voyeurs)... exept classic shard threads on UHALL, not much even here surpass that level of interest.

It is an excellent project, Tina. If only you had access to accurate numbers. :(
It's pretty discouraging to realize how much time I wasted in the last two weeks working with bad data.
Heh!
You "wasted no time" Tina ... gathering/sourcing data is a career field ...
mining the data is another ... and they are so "precise" nowadays ... the "interface" between the two scarcely overlaps (equally proficient in both)

I already noted that you very competently acknowledged the grade/quality of what you were looking at:

I'll try to keep adding the current information on a daily basis for as long as I'm able to and hopefully I won't miss too many days in the process. Keep in mind when you look at the historical data that there are many many gaps in the data. I could only type in what ended up being archived and in all cases no info seems to have been archived past August 2008.

You knew there were "gaps" and possible flaws on what ya had ...
Now you can work on the "correction algorithm"
to separate the wheat from the chaff ...

Thats all.

You never pretended that it would all fall together(whatever it is) like some impossibly perfect game of tetris ... or a one pass solution to a soduko written by me ...
ya drug the net in ... and now you get to spill it out and sort it ...
knowing whats missing (so as to avoid assumptions) is equally as important as knowing the "weight" of the good points you trust.

*grins*
Ask Surgeries if he knows of any "Anthropological forensic bookkeeping" type software out there.
Read as much as ya can here:the DAEDALUS PROJECT: MMORPG Research, Cyberculture, MMORPG Psychology
Rough sketch out what you wanna make of your data ...
^^thats where the "wasted time" feeling is from ...
Haven't "solved" your puzzle ... hehe ...didn't know what the "solution might be" to be able to recognize it even if Ya had .. !!!
You were JUST gathering data ... and that remains commendable, again, for sourcing it and qualifying it ...
AND
Being willing to look at it in different lights ... angles ... frameworks.
and THEN being able to go: oh crap! not good enough, not what I thought ... checking your work and acknowledging a "flaw"

 not a waste. *winks* :danceb:

Just go to every single shard and count up the number of placed houses.

The number of paying subscribers is going to to less this total.

This is not recommended because sometimes it is just better to be blissfully ignorant.

Ummm....folks....go look at the guild and faction pages today. I think someone at EA finally got the message. Have only checked a couple of shards, but what I've seen so far shows higher numbers than yesterday. Also, Chesapeake has numbers again!!!!!!!!!!!

It's too early in the day for the west coast shards to have their numbers published (need to wait about another 5 1/2 hours for them).

Can people who have been checking this thread please, please look at those pages today and post if you still see squirrely results?

I won't be able to pick this up again for another hour or so, but I'm excited that maybe our message got through yesterday to someone!

:danceb: <--- Borrow's Fayled's dancing broccoli

P.S. I also caught a glimpse of what seems to be a new link to UO Facebook. Didn't have time to look around the official site any further than that, but it may be worthwhile for the curious to see if the official site had some other maintenance yesterday.

Nothing for Origin, yet. It does look like GL updated within the last two weeks. I've been away, sorry. Can't call it closer than that.

Origin and the Top 20 Guilds listing probably won't show updates for another three hours or so. Baja, LA, Napa, Pacific, and Sonoma should update in the next hour or two (assuming they and Origin are going to update at all).

Tina, have a couple of questions for you.

1) Knowing that some characters dont get logged in every 30 days when players use other characters more then others. Plus with holiday gift items, which would throw off any guilds numbers when they do sign in on all their characters during the holidays. How do you really determine if the numbers are accurate or average sum if you used all 12 months or do you base numbers off of the peak non-holiday months?

2) With the above question and lets add past site issues, present site issues, future site issues, inconsistent guild members who dont play every month, and peak seasonal times around the world. Do you feel the numbers wont truly reflect even a true constant average of guilds numbers with all those circumstances?

I hope I made sense.

With all the issues these numbers seem to have every couple of months and how much work it is to manually keep track of them, I doubt that I will ever get to the point of even beginning to consider coming up with any kind of averages. I just track them to kind of get a vague sense of what's going on with the game's subscriptions on a particular date compared to some earlier date and to make some loose comparisons of activity/population between shards.

Now that it appears someone at EA fiddled around with the guild reporting to improve its accuracy, here are the numbers from mid-September 2010, early November 2010 (right before I stopped looking at them for a while), and for today, March 1, 2011.

For the time being, I've left the February 2011 figures in the spreadsheets at the links in the first post of this thread. I will try to figure out some way to earmark them as being highly suspicious or just delete them at some point. For now all I've had time to do is separate those lines from the ones above and below them with a couple of blank lines so the charts come out with big gaps around that period.

As always, please let me know if you spot any mistakes or have questions.

If you look at the dates....

There's been a lot of server migrations to new locations, and new IP addresses, since September.

It could be that the legacy code in the my.uo.com guild and character files are still trying to look at the old shard & login server IPs for the data, and not finding them.

So, when the West Coast Servers moved from SF to LA, and completely new IP addresses, that would explain why all the West Coast data disappeared at once.
