I am wondering if I should resubscribe to Ultima and get moving on Siege, so I decided to bug you with some question.

I played UO from the end of 98 until I believe somewhere around 2001, then lured by eyecandy I went to DAoC which I enjoyed, after this I think I tried every mmo out there only to realize that they are basically all the same, you play on rails, you gear and level grind and there is no freedom, no risk, not a feeling of actually beeing in a fantasy world. Last example was Rift which looked pretty but at the end of the day its the same as any other modern mmo out there just in different clothes :p I then thought about UO and how even mining was more thrilling than the usual gameplay these days.

I am not sure if this is because the type of players who play mmos changed over the years as they became more mainstream but mostly I miss the stories which evolved automatically in UO purely playerdriven, you had good guys, bad guys, traders, bards, etc. People actually played if you know what I mean.

Well however, maybe returning to my first mmo love is the way to go. I reactivated my account half a year back only to realize that my thief was mostly useless, most of equipment was insured and the game itself looked very itemized, so trying to pvp in gm crafted stuff kind of wouldn't cut it anymore and I closed it again :O

Now that I am pretty disillusioned with modern mmos I am thinking to set foot on Siege. Not really so fuzzed that it will take a long time to max out a character, just curious how the population is ? Is it actually still worth trying to start anew here ? Or would I be running for hours without seeing a soul ? Are there still housing spots or is everything full ? How does Siege feel ? (odd question I know :p)

sorry for the wall of text and thanks for some advise :)

Wouldn't be able to tell you about the population these days, but if you're going to come back, Siege is the shard to do it on. Don't they have 1 or 2 week trials or something like that? Might want to check it out that way.

I once had a thief on Chesapeake, then EA made *Insurance* and *Trammel* and my poor thief chr. retired. That ancient chr. is still retired there for all he had left to STEAL would be sigls or if a thief runs into some goofball maybe not bless or insure and actually be brave enough, to be in felucca for a change. So he is still a very sad chr. there and feels quite useless on Chesapeake. I seldom even log on the poor, born in 1998 thief, once a very successful thief of a chap, 'cept to *refresh* him over there.

Ultima Online should probably be called ITEM$ online; more item intense nowadays than ever. And ya either need to imbue SA upgrade, or know an imbuer to probably have some wonder suit if pvpin nowadays. I duno I don't play pvp chrs. any longer, since the *age of stuff* ! I DID enjoy pvping when it was more a skill based thing instead of twinkie items game, makin the man !!

I play crafters here, easy targets, but like I give a flip, when I been dying, in UO since 98. I just wave and say howdy ! :)

The population on Siege is NOT as huge as some shards are for sure.
But I also *can* be and am on Chesapeake and there be days or nights it can be as slow [there] as here..depends times of day night anywhere on any shard.

As for actually *SEEING* folks, Siegers are not gonna just be visable and bank sitting like elsewhere where ya about have to go to LUNA to see lots of players, all at once but, whom mostly are AFK anyhow, cuz they know they are utterly safe in trammel, in LUNA banksitting, so they can be not really there many of the times, when they are visably showing that they are, THERE !

Still if you are remotely even thinking to come back to Ultima Online, Siege would be a place that is well worth trying to come back to UO upon. A shard where ya CAN loose something out of your backpack, a shard where you can become DEAD by another player, a shard that is NOT insured to the nines or blessed on everything on em, a shard that actually might NEED some other players for something they sell buy or got or make.

Bout as *old school* as one possibly can maybe try to achieve, one can do here, cuz Siege is all felluca ie pre trammel, pre insurance, pre twinkies sitting at a bank, visable all over cuz they know no one can harm them in LUNA trammel etc.

And other shards you can about go into cardiac arrest on what they feel is a *fair price* for anything be it a stupid wood table they sell at 5k+ a pop or uber suits that cost far more of a fortune elsewhere than they will for ya to get wear, or own, or to lose HERE ! :)

As for land lots is available for houses of all sizes for the most part, it would depend on where ya really wanted a house to be put. Areas around moongates are fuller than way out there, yet there are max secured home spots nearly available just about anywhere for the most part.

I would say via me wall of text, that you GIVE SIEGE A TRY, ya may find it works for ya and how you kinda wished the rest of UO 'still' was, elsewhere, but may only find HERE, on Siege, most of the time !

That and Siege players are sort of a smaller population of peculiar disfunctional family, community, that just grows on ya sorta like some craving for pizza or chocolate candy that, ya can not quite let go of as a group of ...wonderful, unusual, grumpy, opinionated, strong willed cusses, whom ya grow to like too much, to go away from, so ya stay here.

That peculiar attraction to the assorted different types of people playin here, just may suck you in and happen to YOU too, here on Siege and only Siege !:grouphug:

My sig shows I am active on 2 shards, but when ya have in game friends that go clear back to 1998 somewhere ya don't just dump them like chopped liver unwanted, to come over here either, so ya go back and forth to be with your in gameFRIENDS.

FRIENDS you will make HERE, you will maybe be lucky then, to have them all on just ONE shard [HERE] and can focus on playin UO on just ONE shard instead of puddle jumpin around, like I often do, back and forth, to be with my UO friends, going back to 98,there or 2004 here, in game. Luckily for me I am a talkative sort that... can multitask !

Lots easier I suppose to be focused ONE place 24.7 but it is nice to have in game folks ya still can call *friends* over the many UO yrs. ya maybe have had, on 2 shards, too.

But if ya just returnin from long absenteeism, go for ONE shard to focus upon like Siege !

Hi there,

First, to reiterate what the other posters have said and judging by what you have told us, if you are going to give UO another try then Siege definitely is the shard you should be looking at.

The population is certainly fairly low here and the land of UO considerably larger than it was back in your day, so yes you could well go a long time without seeing anyone just by casually wondering around; you will not see hoards of players around as you would have done a decade ago. But on the plus side, the numbers have been boosted recently thanks to an initiative by Petra Fyde to encourage players from normal shards to give Siege a try. So things are looking a little better than they were just a few months ago.

Secondly, the population here is a very tight group and, generally, extremely friendly and helpful. Because of the relatively low numbers and the one-character-per-account limitation, pretty much everyone is known to everyone else and your actions will define who you are. Another boost to a server such as Siege is the fairly recent introduction of a general chat mode so that anyone who has chat enabled can talk to anyone else.

As far as thieves are concerned, such outlaws and pickpockets count among the most notorious on the shard at the moment - Nightstalker, Raptor and Lord Smurfy to name three. You probably won't do so well just hanging around a bank awaiting victims, but if you look around the main shopping areas such as New Magincia, or some of the common farming areas, and especially if you are not afraid to get "heavy handed" with some of the more helpless victims, you can do well.

Housing is no problem at all on Siege and you would have no trouble finding spots for anything up to and including a keep in pretty much any area of the world.

"Feel" is subjective. To me, Siege has always been a great place to be. I guess you will need to try it yourself to form an opinion. Just take a one month subscription out and see how it goes, and if you like it, help the rest of us continue the efforts to reinvigorate the shard.

ya . i played before trammel existed . ive played trammel , played fel on shards where there IS a trammel . siege is by far the closest thing you will find to old school .

no we wont be hanging around the bank . we might be anywhere . also generally not willing to just give away our location . thats a fast way to get killed . but i think if you ask nicely in general chat youll find answers to your questions .

we have a guild here called NEW . you are highly encouraged to spend a month with them . NEW is a great place to get to know the community , learn who is who and eventually help you select a guild suited to your taste .
they've been doing this for years and are really knowledgeable.
that and the free starter gear they give out really can make a dif if you are struggling to keep a tunic on your back and gettin killed alot. please dont feel bad about asking , most of us donate our lesser gear as we get better stuff. so yeah , take my crap suit . i certainly dont need it anymore =)
just pay it forward when you get good .

and the feel ? ... sandbox . they give you the basics and well ... you take it from there. (no rails) you want to build a completely insane combination of skills go for it . you might spark the next craze if it works .

Siege is a nice place for a thief. The locals are quite soft, most are shockingly easy to rob. Many of the die hard pvpers are just as easy pickings for a thief.

Also, thieves will usually help a brother with sticky fingers out.
