Just wanted to remind those of you who still play this old class, that there are a huge number of thieves on Siege.

Many of us would welcome you to the shard. I know personally, I miss the days when Siege had a few detectives roaming the lands looking for me and my fellow thieves. It added to my fun, and I'm sure the back and forth we had gave them some fun as well.

Anywho, thought I would bring this up to start the discussion in here since this forum seems pretty much dead...la

I am contemplating putting tracking and detect hidden on my thief.... but seems like that would be against my morals.

Yeah, I enjoy those skills, but for a true detective, you would want to have forensics so you can tell if the thief is in the guild...la

I'll come after you if I can manage Siege without lagging too much. I'm giving it a test run today, but since I'm in the UK I may get too much lag to make it worthwhile.

Edit: Is there a modern detective template I should consider?

I am planning to start up a detective toon this evening on Siege. I already have a necro/mage there which has 115's throughout, so I figure I can use him to be my thief killer.

I will probably go overkill with the template thought, but...the key is hunting and killing the thief.

What skill is needed?

I would have to say to have any chance to track down a thief, the key will be locating the thieves on the shard so you know who to track. so first off...

GM tracking

Next step is, how to you see them to target them?

GM detect hidden

Although Siege doesn't have passive detect, I can say from time to time, I have been revealed when walking past an elf, so I will have to do the quest to switch from human to elf...another nice feature is it is harder for a skilled thief to track me, lol.

Ok, that 200 points that I feel I will need for this character. Since I have played a thief for a number of years, I know what does, and what does not usually work against various thief templates...I know many thieves don't use resist magic in their template...*BLAMO*...gotta have high magery and high eval int, so the spells hurt more and para will work as long as they don't carry a crate around with them.

Along those same lines, I do believe I will work alchemy on this character so I can have the bonus for pots. Conflag pots should work well against flagged thieves. :) But so will GE pots, the added damage will help to wipe away those rascals.

One other skill that probably is going to be used, but not very high is forensic id. Gotta make sure the thief is in the guild...kinda fun to know they can't count you...I just wish perma grey was still around...then thief hunting could be done by just about everyone...lol...la

I don't know if you were on the shard when they were, but there used to be a duo of players that ran around on characters named Shelock Holmes and Watson...ROFL. Watson was a dxxer/tracker/detector...Holmes was the mage. They would chase me around the shard, sometimes all night. The only way I could shake them was usually jumping server lines via the moongates. They were fun, but didn't last too long on the shard.

I was sad to see them go. They probably were the last active detectives on the shard. Maybe if we can get enough of us...we can guild up, ROFL...la

You should log back in, I'm sure the thieves would love you. :)

On a side note...in regards to your template, had better spend some of those points on increasing the damage you deliver. Even if you have an uber weapon...the typical thief will have fun haing you chase them...especially if they have wrestling and they can disarm you...la

while it would be great fun to have a detective on Siege you need to address the template a little, even my thief would own you fairly fast with that temp, IMHO i think it would be brilliant if there was a guild of detectives on siege. would add a great new element to the game!

i have a dtective on Atl, where there are a few hundred stealthers. when i bring him to a spawn, or anywhere for that matter, i can neutralize any and all stealthers there. cant usually kill them because of their Legendary Running Skill, but i can at least keep them at a distance.

Would love to come back, just that they cleaned up "Bel'ni" along time ago.
And i am sure not starting for scratch ever again.

For those bringing justice to the lands, have fun!

Yeah, back in the days when the streets of Moonglow were the places we thieves would stealth around snooping packs. Was a good time...la

I'd totally build up a detective on Siege if they actually had a purpose.

Tracking and detect to find you, I can understand you need these.
Forensic Eval to know if you're in the thieves guild? If you play Siege even a bit, you already know who all the thieves are - so no need for forensics.

Get some combat skills to kill a thief, ok.

But the biggest problem is - I reveal you. I know your a thief. I have the combat skill to kill you. But I can't kill you because you're blue and inside a guardzone.

IF using forensic eval on you turned you grey like the old days, then I'd definitely train it and have fun hunting thieves. But I've never seen a thief leave Luna bank and there's nothing to do about it.

So what's the purpose of a detective?

You are right, at the moment, there really doesn't appear to be a reason for them. I suppose this is my biggest reason for backing any type of recommendation to instating grey status again for thieves...la

I second what he said. I LOVE playing a detective and would gladly do so on Siege if detectives could actually do something about thieving with Forensic Evaluation.

Unless I'm mistaken, Forensic Evaluation only gives information but it does not allow you to act upon it any more than you would otherwise be able to do so.

I have a GM Detective on Atlantic that is guilded in a Trammel ruleset RP guild.
1. He can determine who killed a corpse. He has used this to determine who killed his guildmate but the only way they could kill guildmate in Trammel ruleset was if they were warred to us or we were in Felucca. The only purpose this serves is RP.
2. He can tell who is in the Thieves Guild. He can't do anything about it. Practically speaking, how would he be able to reasonably roleplay this ability even if he could act on it. If they were in disguise, he could probably *notice* the disguise.
3. He can tell who picked a lock....woohoo, now he knows who is training lockpicking skill.

If I translate that to a non-RP or even semi-RP detective on Siege:
1. I could determine who killed a corpse...*frowns*
2. I could determine who is in the Thieves Guild...Bruin covered this matter pretty well. To that point, a thief has little incentive to use Incognito or a disguise on Siege if they have a Siege Blessed item equipped or am I mistaken?
3. I could determine who picked a lock...who cares since lockpicking is only used to train the skill so you can open looted treasure chests or go treasure hunting.

The only way to practically play a non-RP detective on Siege would be to do so as a red character (or at least orange) unless I'm mistaken. That is just sad that a detective has to go red to do their job.

I do appreciate the conversation starter. I have a serious question about playing a detective on Siege under the current conditions for thieves and detectives...thieves were rightfully plying their trade at the last event (*shakes fist at thief who stole from him at the event*). So let's assume I wasn't a noob on the shard and I showed up with my trained blue detective. So I could detect who amongst the participants were in the Thieves Guild, now what...if they don't steal from me (why would they if they know I'm a detective other than for fun and then again I have to wait for them to steal from me?) and they don't get noticed stealing...would there be anything I could do?

I'd totally support this. Bring back forensic eval turning a thief gray and I'd totally do it. However this is probably a change that's only useful to siege since I'm assuming that thieves on prodo shards don't actually steal from players so i doubt it would happen. Hopeful though....

Perhaps petitioning to have it added to the Siege/Mugen ruleset.
Many things that no longer apply/work on prodo still apply on siege, and Vice versa.

If this were to implement, I would myself go to siege. I have 2 toons there(2 acct), that only exist to gather holiday gifts that i drop at the bank in luna, to give a gift to the players there.
1 a thief to loot and pillage, 1 a detective mage to deal with riffraff.
RP ideas zoom thru my head already.

Oh no, we're there. Theres been a lull, but we're there.

The recent expansion would have been a great place to start bringing back the old skills.

That would be fun, and give me a good reason to make a character on siege. That is not an experience that other shards can really provide. I would want to wait for the greying to come back though
