Screw that...they should back up characters as PART of the game. EVERY other game out there does. I've had characters restored in EVERY MMO I've EVER played...that includes DAoC.

i agree as well that i'd like to see idocs just go up in flames, etc. and lose all the items inside.

But there is also to say its only a game! The game that you have played a long time, and only because one character is lost, leaving this game? you must see the oppertonities to begin a new character a new future, a new way! So try it, i think the first time will be hard but you will see after a month it will all become good.
