Equal skill cap for everyone, but more for non PvPers

Im an 11 year vet so don`t jump on me with the usual "your a noob who hasnt earned the extra 20 points...."

Make it available as a token, purchasable at the uogamecodes store, $4.99 so that everyone can have there 720 max.

Part 2
an 800 skill cap for non PvP Characters
Murder counts, faction membership, guild fighting would automatically disqualify you from the higher skill cap, but be void if it involved defending a spawn.

The skill cap is fine, the +5 -> +20 vet reward is fine, and you can EASILY break the skill cap WELL past 800 through item use (at the cost of other mods obviously).

No reason to change the skill cap, it should always be maintained at a level that forces people to make "Do I train X skill or Y skill because I can't fit both" or "Do I use +X Skill items or save the mod for something else?" type of either-or choices.

Maybe it's the choice between Parrying and Magic Resist, Alchemy or Healing... whatever it may be, it's part of the challenge in the game.

Personally, I still want to see MORE skills... really I'd love to see a skill-tree system that retains the openness of UO's system so that it allows a generalist who can do a wide range of actions at a reasonable quality (think a 7xGM crafter) or a specialist who can do a narrow range of actions exceptionally well (i.e. a Legendary Metalworker (Mining, Smithing, Arms Lore, Tinkering, Imbueing)).

Some simple skill tree concepts would be:

Base: Alchemy
- Specialization: Potions
- Specialization: Transmutation

Base: Smithing
- Specialization: Armoursmithing
- Specialization: Weaponsmithing

etc.

I think vet bonus at this point is useless. Who is gonna be aronund in 4 years? So starting a new one, without 720, is kinda silly now. So its down to buying an aged account.

Probably I will be around in 4 years time, but as other have said, the skill caps are fine as they are, its worked for the last 13 years, its about the only thing in UO they ain't broken.

I know it is been only about 6 years, Age of S*%$ if I mind right when they added the +5 to skill cap, it was around the time they added +5 to the stat total for 6 months playing.

I was talking of the cap in general :p:p:p, players have it so easy these days, with items you can take it way above the cap easily.

I've got a better idea! Lets make it so that everyone only needs one character meaning you can have all skills trained to the maximum on one character with 720 skill points being the maximum you can have active at any time...!!! That way we only need to have 1 character per account!

Tis true what you say. Sad thing is now sites are selling tame pets that are fully trained for real money. How much easier can it be for a nub tamer now days? EA is sure missing out on pixels for cash. Now people want max skill cap as a new player. Way to solve the issue that is just charge the token what it would cost you for 4 years of playing. Be $623.52 at $12.99 a month :)

Skills points over 100 shouldn't count in the total. Powerscrolls were supposed to be a choice of speciality to be more efficient but less versatile, now it's an obligation. We went from 7 skills templates to 6.
With skills points over 100 not counting in the total, it's possible again to have 7 skills like in the past, but you can't use it to have lots of 60ish skills all over the board.
Also, +skill jewelry could be removed.

The way I see it, I have paid over $3000 dollars over the years to keep my accounts going and I would have zero problem with this token being offered(for a reasonable price) for non vet accounts.
EA should see this is an easy revenue source. Remember, our game isnt exactly thriving at the moment

I could see this. Another thing they could think about is metallurgy. The ability to take regular and special ore and ingredients to make new metals that offered new alloys and metals.
Examples
ore "A"+ ore"B"+some rare ingredients= Metal that can have been imbued at slightly higher property weights(550?), but is very brittle, thus wont last long
ore "D"+ ore "C"+ other ingredients= Metal that is incredibly durable(2/3x), but can only accept %300-%400 properties

I would also accept certain skill maximums being dropped from 120 back down to gm.

Did I miss some huge nerf but what are you talking about? And what was this deal with "void if your defending a spawn"? You want to play in fel and have 80 skill points above my red char(s)? If you can't defend with what you have stop trying.

You cant be serious!?! Instead of the give me generation what happened to work and dedication generation? Ok say your idea went through and the devs implemented that. Noobies get all the stuff that us vets had paid and waited for. No feeling of accomplishment just GIVEN to them by tokens. Do you think even with giving them everything at the beggining is going to keep them playing? The object of UO is to gain stuff over time. May as well have tokens for pre made l33t char with l33t armor and l33t weps and maxed out skills. The noobs will be so l33t they will be killing everybody and everything in game with one hit by the time this give me stuff ends. This give me attitude is whats wrong with UO now days. Give give give...oh Im bored I have everything and kill everything so easy...hmmm I should just keep paying to keep bored....hmmmm..... nah... I will go play a some other game that has substance.

The way I see it I paid for my time to get my rewards and skill cap. Everybody else should also. The game is not thriving and it is not the lack of tokens that should amp up a new player experience. Its the combination of many factors like the lack of UO advertising, mmo's out the ying yang everywhere now days, game systems with online capabilities, f2p models, B2p models, and issues with in UO itself.

For example, go check other game sites. Do you see UO advertised? I see plenty of LOTR and Rapplez advertisements here alone on stratics. Many gaming web sites I read I see Rappelz plastered on most sites. It amazes me that a F2P game is advertised a 100% more then UO. Oh you may see UO mentioned in an article here and there but besides that they depend on us to advertise and PAY for the game they wont advertise for lol.

If they want a player base they need to advertise, or make UO f2p and have an item shop (which then your idea actually is a good idea besides the 800 pvm skill thing), or commit to a classic shard that may bring back some players. We are losing more then gaining. Accounts > player base in UO now days.

What kind of achievement gives something you have to wait for?
Seriously guys, being on the game for longer is an advantage in itself. You've been playing the game for longer than the new players. You are lucky. Too bad for the new players who weren't there before to enjoy it for longer.
Yeah sure you like to have a pat on the back to thank you for staying in the game. It's cute. But as 720 total skill points is a requirement, not having them is a less. Having 720 has become the normality, not a bonus.
Wake up, we don't need that useless nerf. We need new players. We shouldn't block them saying things like "You don't deserve the full potential of your template!"

Stop calling them "noobies" for instance and welcome them. You make very stubborn uptight neighbours, and that doesn't attract newcomers.
"I've been paying for XX years my little boy! In my time we would *bow* at elders!"
Well you've been playing UO for all those years because you were waiting for a medal or what?

New players shouldn't have a lower cap, and they shouldn't have to be milked for real cash. If you have too much money, give it to others, don't ask for more stupid ways to make people spend theirs. Don't you see EA has far enough disgusting ways to sell separately parts of the game when it should already be part of our subscription? You want to give them more ideas?

You fear what? New players better than you? It's already happening.

LOL that made me laugh. So should EA/Bioware Mythic do it to all their games then? Make all chars on ALL of their online games be maxxed out for new players? Sorry to hit you with the truth no matter what they would give to UO new players it wouldnt matter. People wouldnt know about it because they do not advertise it. Plus UO CC has one of the most complicated game clients out there. The EC is similar to War and DaoC but they just cant push the EC on most of the current player base and drop the CC.

They depend and hope the current players will bring in the new players. Your job is to bring in at least 20 players a year same as me and any other player and hope they stay active. Thats what EA wants us to do and PAY them for it :). Accounts > player base anyway. Giving items/skills/stats isnt going to fix the mess with new players. EA has to do it and they are sure not going to advertise a current UO in the mess its in. Their new star wars project is their baby atm. Thats where most of UO, DaoC, and War's resources are going into atm

Here is a comment from EA about their new baby....

"It makes things easier for us to have everything under one roof, and that will eventually benefit players." How so? Customer service was one example given
]

Its going into that not UO :( Hey if you are all for giving stuff make sure new players get a castle in a prime spot and at least 500 mil in gold so they can buy stuff. :)

I wasn't speaking about giving maxxed skills to new players, I was saying that new players shouldn't have a lower cap for total skill points. You totally misread me.
Whatever the reason may be that a new players arrive, when he's gonna hit the total skill cap he's gonna see it's blocked for him while everybody's posting and discussing about templates with 720 skill points. Well it's just a nasty discover that is unecessary.
When you reach the max cap after 4 years, the first word is "finally!", not "woohoo thank you EA I can do so much better now!" or "I made it! I'm so great!"

I hate to think what you trammies would have though when there was only 1 facet. Most crafters had to also allocate points to fighting skills on their mules in order to survive monsters and or PK's.

Humph!

What is "the gap" between a not 1 year vet and an over 4 year vet ... number wise?

fully decked out with equal uber gear for both?

bear in mind ... the next question will be:

Does the RNG success/fail rate, smooth the effective results?

I would prefer best of 1000 results ... but for brevity and purposes of discussion ...
best of 100 could suffice.

I have no issue with new players having the same skill cap as me, nor would I have any gripe if we all started with skill caps of 120 in all skills and powerscrolls were replaced across the board. After all, when 100 was the cap and skill+ items didn't exist, we were all able to train the same templates. I don't believe players should jump through hoops or spend gold simply so they can train skills. Make skill training more fun and challenging, but the skill caps should just be there.

But why bother even talking about skill caps when they aren't even caps? As long as you can throw on skill + items, the caps are meaningless. I think there needs to be a cap that actually is a cap :D Or a limit in how much skill + item boosting you can do. At the same time, make it so GM is actually a good working skill level rather than pushing players to have 120 in everything and acquire the last 120's with skill items.

I'm not expecting anyone to agree with the above, but I believe real skill and caps ought to have meaning. Trained skill should give more benefit than a few items of fakery, especially with advanced chars and the ability to buy scrolls with skill points :D The whole skill caps system we have now is a joke IMHO.

My sampire has a 801 skill cap and my pvp dexer also has a 801 skill cap, one of my mages has a 780 skill cap and my other dexer has a 781 skill cap. You do realize you can have this... you just have to sacrifice a mod in your suit to do so.

Hell if I wanted to make a pvm mage it wouldn't be hard to hit a 840-850 skill cap with a skill increase book on.

I don't think this is realistic for a couple reasons:
1. It's been pointed out by quite a few that one can easily get to an 800 skill level if they take the time on their suits.
2. How do you propose to differentiate between a PvP and non-PvP character from a system/game standpoint ... other than what you or I use them for?

I'm too lazy to skim this thread to find out why it's still up, but basically my response is no, and no. Right now a 720 skill cap requires four years, that's about $480 not including expansions and/or boosters. EA can sell 720 status for $5 when the game is free to play, or else I'd like an extra incentive for actually supporting this game for all these years. It's not like a guy with a 700 skill cap can't compete or something.

Next, an 800 skill cap for non PvP characters? You really need to flesh out an idea like that first, then come back and make a real thread. I know some people have suggested ways to do it, but really, putting people into classes is not what this game is about, and it's the simplicity of the game which has kept UO great. I mean, anyone who has to distinguish between PvPers and non PvPers probably hasn't played UO for 11 years (or has somehow managed to avoid PvP at all costs), because back when I started I'd PvP on my crafter, bard, basically any character.

with pvp being as balanced as I have experienced it in 13 years, I think a 20 point skill difference can actually be crippling to pvp'ers with accounts less than 4 years old.

720 points for everyone would not hurt anyone.

The idea to reward loyalty to the game with skill points was ill-conceived to begin with and should not be maintained, as it creates unsurmountable inequalities in a game that is not based on levels but on skills.
