east coast level 13 servers

During the past few weeks i've noticed extreme lag/lock-ups/discons while attempting to play.

After discovering my ping to all east coast servers have jumped by at least 20 i have been running tracerts and discovered random lag spikes in the level 13 servers every other round of tracing. Some hops reaching as high at 215ms.

Anyone else having these problems? How does one get this fixed?

Let me correct a few errors here...

There is no such thing as "level 13 servers"

There's "Level 3" (a company that makes up part of what we call the "internet backbone") "ROUTERS, SWITCHES AND GATEWAYS".

It's a long-known, often-recurring issue on the East Coast UO Servers that anyone whose signals are coming through Level 3 (instead of Sprint or AT&T) have massive problems with lag.

While a Level 3 router might have "ELECTRONIC" in the name, that's THEIR name to indicate that it's a machine that connects to EA's internal network. EA has noting to do with its maintenance or settings, except to be able to call at Level 3 and pancake about the bad connection (which Level 3 is typically slow to act on, if they ever actually fix it. Even when they do a "fix", te fix seems to undo itself within weeks).

I hate level 3 with a purple passion, since (among other things) they like to route stuff hundreds of miles in the opposite direction, in order to interface with a different part of the net. They also are the most laggy of all the North American backbone providers, and the least responsive to error/lag reports.

For example, if I hit a port on my ISP that goes to sprint or AT&T, it goes from eastern KY, to western KY, to St. Louis, KC, or Chicago, then out to the west coast to the bay area (SF, Stockton and/or San Jose).

- but if I hit one that is linked into Level 3, it goes to Nashville, then ATLANTA (which is as far east as I am, and 300 miles due south), THEN switches it over to AT&T, who has to send the signal BACK to Nashville, then St Louis, then on to San Francisco.

Opps my bad! I didn't have my contacts in when i was trying to read it. Lol.

Yes i realize it's not EA's responsibility just more or less wondering if anyone else was having problems and if there was anything i could do to fix it.

This is the first time i've had major lag spikes with this and it's really annoying me. I did notice last year instead of giving me a straight shot to DC, just like you said, i was directed hundreds of miles to Atlanta then back up. I can live with double ping just not these crippling lag spikes.

That was actually one of the reasons I quit three years ago. Thankfully I haven't had a similar problem since I got back.

Level 3 is constantly on my tracert as I am East Coast playing LA. What I have seen is 100% packet loss when Level3 hands off to either ALTER.NET or ATT. Handoffs to anything else seem fairly good.

The 100% loss routers are the last 2 Level3 ones and the 1st of whatever they are handing off to. However, it is ALWAYS in the Washington, DC if one goes by the naming.

I use UOTrace whenever I get a login issue, then when I confirm it's like the above I do something else for an hour and then I can get into the game. EA/M wants to know why perhaps players aren't playing as much, this is one cause. Crappy backbones to their servers!
