Yes.
Because friends have asked me to make characters on other shards for a multitude of different reasons.

Yes. So I can pvp or pvm on multiple shards. I have friends across 5 or 6 shards that I like to play with.

Would be nice if they allowed you to have two houses, on two different shards. *Siege doesn't count*

I'm based on Great Lakes, where I've always played, but since returning I've been wondering about the Atlantic shard. What's the deal with it? Why's it so popular?

My play style has always been RP, PvM, PvP, collecting, everything-- in the old days, RPers were a bit thicker-skinned and did it all. I'm hoping there's still some like-minded communities based on Great Lakes, because I really don't want to move, and I prefer not to multishard.

I have always played on Great Lakes (1997-2003; 06, 08, present). I'm familiar with its history, was a council member of one of its biggest, longest-lived guilds (RIP, The Nobility), was a regular patron of Kazola's Treetop Keg and Winery, The Cap and Dagger, and so on.

I didn't play 2 shards but I am starting to. I have played Atlantic since I started playing UO in 2000 but have started on Origin for a less cutthroat, less populated experience.

On top of that, I only run 1 account now and 7 characters are just not enough for all the templates I have in mind :D

Yes. Great Lakes and Europa, though I'm not currently playing.

Reason? Variety. Different people, different experiences.

Napa 95% of the time always will be home for me.
Seige 5% of the time just for kicks.

I am working on making a usable character on every shard, so if I run in to a friend who wants some company for a spawn or something I am capable.

Right now I have usable characters on:

Catskills
Siege
Drach
Chessy
Great Lakes
Atlantic
Legends
Origin
Lake Austin
Sonoma

Catskills was my primary shard but I am currently working on transitioning away from it. I am not sure where I'll land yet.

oh as I said it before I shall do so again ....

In the begining ... GM's sent us ('97 players) across the shards when some numbnut forgot to add a coma in a line of code and sent the shard off line for a week or 2 (most times it was a day or 2 but was a few times... the shards would have a publish a day if not 2/4, so we went down alot!! les I digress). hehe Of Course I play multi shards. Who dont??

Friends who moved across the shards waved a come hither and poof I had another house and batch of friends. This went on across over 15 shards and I have played more and had homes on more still but with the money crunch I like others had to cut it back. I'm down to 42 active accounts out of the 53 I have. (pick up your jaw jr. your druling on the floor).

Current Shards: Origin, Pac, Sonoma, Baja, Napa, Atlantic, Chessy , Cats, Siege, Oceania, Hokuto 9 castles (I got an eye on another hehe) 11 keeps In total 63 houses that range from tiny stone and plasters to towers up the kazoo. And before you say wow, Yes I still need more lock downs!!!! This is what you get when you play a GAME for 13 years/plus. I have hundreds of ledgendery char's gm's up the tail and lots of newbies, and yes i know each and every one of them and play them.

I blame the first Dev/GM's they made me do it!! I also subscribe to the addage:

She who has the most toys WINS!

I have a few characters that I play when Pac is down but none are gm in anything. I don't have time to keep up with the changes on one shard let alone numerous shards.

Yes! Started with the friend who brought me to UO on Pacific, then we started on Drach also with friends. Later met a friend who preferred Atlantic so started a home there. Then we tried out Europa and Legends. When he left, I moved to Origin. I really live there now, but do keep my houses and characters active on the 5 shards. And of course have newbies on lots of other shards to help folks do trades and give away my gifts there. Multiple shards is just one more of the fun things about UO :)

I have lots of characters, on many shards, able to do what i want with them. some aren't completely worked up, but 90's in everything is close enough for me. Origin is my "home" shard, but i play a lot on Baja and Siege, as well.

Yes.

Initially for x-sharding. Then for events. I also switched shards due to lag.

Plus, I love training new chars. There's a sense of fulfillment when you see skills go whooshing up :D

I do it to see what the community is like. I'm working up a character on Europa now because I get less lag/better ping to there than to LA, where my main characters are.

yes, because my main is dead and i can log whatever shard is currently has fighting. Yew gate fights don't count; they are beyond lame.
