Disguise Kit and Hair Dye -- No longer functioning

Mairuit in the UO PvP Thief forum brought up a good point....

Currently, you cannot use hair dye with a disguise kit. This is something recent --- previously, there was no issue using either the 'hair dye' item or hair dresser to change the color of your hair under the effect of a disguise kit.

Now you cannot under the effect of a disguise kit....

WHAT GIVES!

I wouldn't dye my thief's hair in case it dyed over her signature special dye color but why oh why can't we use ninja animal form while in disguise?

Where's the harm?

I need to walk a lot faster when stealthing around in fel in disguise.

:)

Just one more item to add to the long list of how the thief profession was killed off?...la

I would like to be able to use ninja form in disguise, too.
What I want to know is why they changed things so you can't use the hair dye with it. What exactly was so game-breaking about that? :twak:

EA has always hated thieves and continues to nerf them without even realizing or caring about it. For the most part theyve reduced it to a dice roll like everything else in this game. I could list a bunch of simple things they could do to at least make playing a thief viable again but its not like it would do any good. Picking up items off the ground and calling it stealing is a far cry from what thieves should be. Nowadays most people have turned thier thieves into lame pop shotting res killers.

Thieves are still alive and prevalent. Just depends on your tactics and play style.

I do agree.....I don't consider stealing from monsters an enhancement to the PvP aspect of a thief. Maybe they will do something about it soon.....

My thief was nerved yet again with the changes to detect hidden. Now I cant do a thing about multi cliented protectors. GM detect now completely useless. I wonder how the people that make decisions in this game actually come up with thier ideas because they are obviously not playing the game.

Because UO's code is over 10 years old, when they change or add a new line of code its gona screw with the original code from 13 years ago.

E.g. change the code so artis drop into our backpack, now the original code doesnt know what to do when an item is stolen from our back pack.

YOU gota remember guys, UO coding is 13 years old and has had 100s if not 1000s of different people work on it with every patch and business change new people come along and try to learn the original coding before making changes.

Its as simple as change an " to a $ " and it would through the WHOLE code of the game off.

As " might mean in the original code "delete" where the new guy knows a different code that uses " as break

Then concider there are probably over 1'000'000 lines of code for UO as its so old now

Your taliking 1 lilltle button wrong and the whole game is screwed so someone has to sit there for 200 hours decifering code to find the mistake.

If any of you have written a program you'll know where im coming from, iv written 200 liners and spent days finding 1 lil falt, imagine what its like for these guys with 13 years of scrambled code to decifer....

From what the hairdressers say, it seems like they did this on purpose.

I don't think it was a random mistake from 'fixing' the dye tubs. Or like you said, from adding or changing a line from 13 years ago.

I'm a system consultant, and as you state that you have written a program (whether it was for a company or at your own leisure). You should know that all programs have specific "requirements" --- a change like this is not simply missing a line, or even a character of code....this was either always in the code and was somehow "re-activated" with a change, or it was added recently. As Mairut states, there prompt provided by the hair dressers or using hair dye does not make me believe that this was just an oversight....this was intentional. It is hard for me to believe that this was just dead code that was fixed or is now being hit.

Also, if you are a good developer, you have functional and system requirements that explains what your coding is doing in Production. Part of my job is the ability to walk into the door of any company and have an understanding of the logic behind a system using this documentation.

In short, this information should be documented, and I would hope that EA/Mythic is following the same standard procedure.

Never did understand the use of the disguise kit. Sure it messed up your macros, but at the same time, I had no problems getting close to a mark without a disguise.

I would imagine most people who see the generic names are tipped off anyway. Plus, you play on a trammy shard anyway, just use one of your other slotted characters if you want to really fool someone...la

A disguise kit is much more useful now with the ability to change your skill titles, fame/karma titles, etc. Also, if you are a well known thief, some people tend to shy away from you....using a disguise kit makes this problem much easier to overcome.

Although most of the names are generic, sometimes you can get a good one that doesn't look like an "NPC generated name"

He's not doing traditional 'sneak up and steal something out of your pack' thief-work though.
Are you stalking me?

I do, believe it or not, have more than one thief, on more than one shard, designed for more than one reason.

Some people don't just use a disguise kit just to sneak up on someone; it's also useful for hiding from someone after you steal from them. Especially when your thief is your main and you have more useful things to do with your time than trying to avoid someone interrogating you... say, when you're trying to sell something in Luna.

This.

Well said. Disguise kit is extremely useful item for a thief. Period. Unfortunately, it is easy to tell that someone is using it now when you are stuck with the typical white hair.

Seems like an AWFUL disguise if you ask me!

^ this...I'm considering deleting detect hidden from my soulstone and using it for a more useful skill..perhaps item identification. I have no way to reveal stealth tamers, protectors, etc.. now (aka the people I come across the most, meaning it's cut my potential targets down to nearly nothing)

Did they make changes to detect on Siege as well? One of the perks of playing Siege as a thief was the lack of use of detect there, and no passive detect rocked...la

Question: Is Siege relatively active? Last time I created a character...which was a year or two ago...it seemed like everyone was a stealther template...thoughts?

You would really need to check out that forum. I can only guess that it is desolate, with few long time hold outs playing. I haven't had an active account for about 2 years now, but still enjoy these forums...la

Direct use of detect hidden used to work, you could track someone and detect them to reveal, but no passive detect (thank god). It no longer works if you are blue and they are blue, you can only detect reds now....which doesn't help when you're hunting mostly pvm'ers. One of the dev's chimed into my thread though and said that some changes are coming to detect...I can only hope it's for the better.

It's not like ATL or the other shards, but it's more active than people give it credit. It's just with 5 landmasses and the fact that nobody banksits, and the fact that many people do not use general chat all the time (sometimes a certain character being online at all is enough to know what they're doing, which is calling for them to be raided) that is seems worse than it is. On siege you're more likely to find someone in hythloth level 2, out at sea, or in t2a than you are to find someone in luna. (our shopping city is zento anyways...luna is mostly for pvp)

I would say it's more of, we're here, but don't ever expect to see us all in one place, the common spots on other shards are barren here as they are useless on the siege ruleset, banksit in luna and you'll come back to a gray screen. Our population is low though, could definitely use more players.

Look, I know a lot of thieves have ADD (oooh, shiny!), but let's get back on subject.

I'd still like to find out from the devs why it was necessary to change how disguise kits and hair dyes worked together.
