Bonded pets going wild in the last day or two...

Just intrigued, since I've had a couple of messages from people about their bonded pets suddenly going wild - yes, we know about feeding levels, commands, mood of the pets and such, it's not a question about why it happens generally, but just a request to the folks here, since they are most likely to notice - has there been an increase in people suffering from or mentioning this happening lately?

I had this happen to be yesterday:

I'm killing Dark Wisp Guardians on level two of Wisp dungeon, GD fighting them off, It had been fed before we left, Its killing them, It gets down to half health, The dark wisps are summoning flesh golems etc and I wanted to get my GD near me to heal it. GD doesn't do anything, I leave my finger on the 'All follow me' button, Saying it, What must have been 50 times. It just walks away..

I go up to it, Its still green, but then suddenly notice its unbonded and gone wild!

I retame it the first time and tell it to follow me, It goes in the opposite direction and goes wild again, I tame it, Feed it, then manage to take it home, feed it again and stable it. Will need to now wait an entire week for it to bond and be usable again.

It really helps if folks can provide details of what kind of pet it was and their real and item adjusted skills, and also what they were doing and whether they'd fed/lored the pet recently.

I wouldn't want to call out a new bug until I had full info from the folks affected, often it's a case of the player misunderstanding the necessary skill to control a pet so I'd like to rule that option out first :)

Mapper, what you describe sounds like a dragon losing loyalty because it wasn't under control, but I'm not sure what you're skills are at to be sure. In future, if a pet refuses a command don't hold down the key :D It's best to stop, lore it and feed it till it comes back under control than keep commanding it. Once loyalty starts dropping, more commands will make it worse.

What some don't seem to realize is if a pet fails a command, it is more likely to fail the next one because of the loyalty loss and it takes a while to regain that loyalty with successful commands if you don't feed it. It isn't too difficult to get in a situation where you've had two or three failed commands close together, and suddenly you're failing most of your commands.

Play with your sound on, know what the failed command pet noises are, and feed them as soon as possible when they fail a command, and immediately if they fail more than one or two close together, or simply stop commanding them until you are in a position to feed them. I see a lot of veteran tamers even that don't do this, so it doesn't surprise me much when I hear about pets going wild.

Having said that, if you are doing all those good things, maybe there is a bug, and thanks for the heads up.

Wenchkin/Llewen,

That's why I'm not exactly calling out a 'bug', it just struck me as odd that three people I know who are pretty experienced UO players all mentioned pet loyalty issues catching them out within a couple of days of the patch, so just wanted to know if others were hearing of a similar increase - more than likely it's just an occasional thing as Mapper describes catching out a few people, but thought I'd ask around and see if there was any 'feeling' that unbonding was more common lately. Had there been such a suspicion, I'd have tested a bit to see if i could find an genuine underlying issue - and it looks like there isn't, and it's just coincidence.

Often it's either a newish tamer who thinks 75% control is good or a tamer who plays without sound or loring their pets regularly. Sometimes folks just forget to feed their pets, even though we know we should - get carried away hunting and before you know it draggy is looking hungry for more than just ribs.

It can also be a vet player who hasn't realised the control calculations changed and they'll be adamant they have enough skill without realising they don't :D I tend to say double check with this that you have enough skill (I'd say 90%+) and if you're feeding and loring a pet and it still goes wild then you may have a bug.

Third scenario is dread mares, because there was a glitch in one of the control calculators that didn't adjust the control chance properly for tamers who had less than the minimum taming skill. There's supposed to be a penalty, but it was missed out. I believe the misunderstanding was that 110/110 skill was enough, when it actually gives you just 87.4% control.

My GD went wild two days ago. Had him for years without issue. Something is a miss or at the minimum slightly different. I've heard of similar situations from others as well. I was able to re-tame, feed, and stable him.

Question.

Where the tamers losing control using "real" skill or just "beefed up" skill with some jewellery, tamer's mask or talisman ?

I am asking because (and I cross my fingers here for it to be true...), it "might" be due to changes involving "beefed up" skills being "less" effective as "real" skill points.....

That is, making a real 120 taming/lore real skill be actually worth more than someone who got there putting on, in no time, some jewellery, mask or talisman of sort..........

But I have no idea, just guessing and wholeheartedly hoping it is because of this........

It seems that as long as I have been playing UO I have been reading threads like this. A bit like insurance bugs. Some of them are probably due to player error, and some of them are just intermittant bugginess with the server or the client software.

I've never personally had it happen, and I use skill jewels. My real skill is something like 105/95, 120/110 with jewels. So I very much doubt it has anything to do with that.

There may be something. I had my dread warhorse go down to 'extremely' several times in quick succession. I never allow more than one refusal bark without feeding it, so it wasn't a real problem, but it was unusual. Piper is a 3 x 120 no jewel dependency tamer.

Interesting. I have one dread that ALWAYS goes quickly down to extremely, and needs constant feeding, another that rarely if ever reaches that condition even without feeding it. Both are on two different tamers, one human, one elf, and are 120/120/120 in Taming/Lore/Vet. FWIW, the elf's dread is the one that is never a problem. Perhaps they prefer elves? lol
