I'm sorry, but three minutes is too long. LOL to spending three minutes running somewhere in UO.

I really don't understand this mentality at all... Most any other MMO out there takes that long to get just about anywhere, really. Whether it's porting between cities or travelling along automated paths like ships or flying transports, getting somewhere in a lot of games I've played can be quite a journey. (EVE anyone?) UO is one of the few games available that lets you instantly teleport to almost anywhere on the map, tile by tile.

Anticipation typically heightens the reward rather than cheapen or lessen it.

Then the MMO genre bids you farewell.

This is your notice. Go sign up for WoW. I reckon you'll melt down and eat your own face as soon as you have to run across an entire zone, on foot, just to complete a quest. I promise it takes much longer than 3 minutes.

The mentality is this... There is no difference with Ilshenar than UO proper. It is all the same content. Ilsh has paragons, UO proper has blackrock infected (less frequent, but same deal).

It's my opinion that the locks on Ilshenar were put in their to avoid a whole series of potential cheats from occurring with non-paid subs accessing the content so their is a line of code that limits entry to the gates.

How old is the content... 5 years, right? The locks don't apply anymore. You gain access with the free UO Gold 14 day trial. Keep the locks on the ML stuff since that is "new," but remove the Ilsh locks. If the player base is concerned about farming, then unlock everything but dungeons.

[I'm not familiar with other MMORPGs. I hope their players are causing an uproar about the time they have to spend just to get somewhere, if it is worse than UO Ilshenar. These game companies need to provide options where you choose options: "Spend 5 minutes running to X." So in the meantime, people can spend 5 minutes folding clothes or brushing their teeth. THat part of the journey is not relevant to me as far as UO ILsh is concerned.]

Anticipations wanes after the first 500 hellkittens.

They're not. This attitude about wanting to be able to farm gold from login to logout with zero travel time is unique to a few posters on UO Stratics and nowhere else.

Look, you just removed me from an entire genre. Just like that. You should be satisfied. My card is in the mail, OK!

My main point still stands... there is no discernible difference from Ilsh and the rest of UO, so allow Kal Ort Por, et. al.

I gave an option for an event that rationalizes the deal (killing Bunkerdorn, the guy that put the curse on Ilshenar).

I mean it makes sense. GP will still be limited from BOS change but the world will be congruent.

The devs can roll with it... after Beetlegorn gets defeated they could say something like "His world is now made accessible, but the far more sinister Mondain has yet to be defeated." So Beetleforn's world's are made available and Mondain's aren't. When Stygiadori comes around, Mondain can be defeated and his world's made available while Stygiadori's are still locked due to his overwhelming power.

What is wrong with that?

WHy do you believe that Kal Ort Por, et. al should be excluded from some/all of Ilsh?

Especially when I caught Skrag in a flat-out misrepresentation of the facts.

I re-enacted his supposed timing of the run.

Running the entire way, mounted, it was 2 minutes to JUST the entrance (on the second try - the first try ran into a paragon efreet that I couldn't ditch, and lost over two minutes killing it, and the buddies that joined in with it.

It was another minute, also running without stop (except to open doors, for a split second, each time) from the entrance to the room in question.

I can buy a 10% difference - but at 50% longer required in my tests, I have to assume his reported time is bogus.

If he'd reported a time closer to my runs, in the first place, I'd probably taken him at his word, and not made an issue of it (3 minutes is still a decent best-case run - not that the best case would happen very often, with the potential for paragon Rotters, Lich Lords, Efreets and Executioners along the way) - but when he gave a time that was flat-out impossible for my route, that made his whole stance unacceptable, even if his time for the ethereal warrior island someone else asked for was reasonably accurate.

Great Lakes. I have a guy on Atlantic too. Name a time and I'll run it right in front of you.

EDIT: Time from entrance to destination room was an even 50 seconds, so close enough given that you probably bumble around stopping to double-click doors instead of just smacking an OpenDoor macro as you approach one. I just did a moderately sloppy run from Luna bank to the dungeon entrance though (lost a few seconds bumbling at the gate menu, getting hung up on corners) and it only took 1:15. So yeah, you're either running off a real slow connection or you're doing something wrong.

EDIT: Did another, slightly less sloppy run from the entrance back to Luna bank, and hit 1:09. Yeah wise-ass, I'm calling you out in front of anyone who happens to read this thread. You're running this alongside me. For the record, here's the route I'll be taking. Let me guess, you were running from Compassion because you're afraid of the scary monsters at Chaos or something. You are the sort of newb who cries about how scorpions and ratmen "piled on" to your fight, dragging it out. lol

"Besides, there's only farming left in PvE"

We must be playing different games. PvE is so much more than just gold farming.

In fact, that's a problem of many games, and not only MMORPGs. In a lot of MMORPG you spend your playtime running. It's particularily shocking when you can toggle between walk and run. Everybody walks in the street in RL, but in a game you're always running or even riding an animal.

There are games where it's not too frustrating, with enough teleports to cover all areas, and a sense in walk mode while killing mobs (there close to each other, your role in the party allows you to stand in the middle of a room...). There's agood example with Oblivion, where you must first explore the map (anticipation) to discover special places where you can teleport to afterwards. As you say, after running the same path again and again, the anticipation wears down.

However it makes sense to have blocks where you can't teleport in. Like a good dungeon. It's leveled in order to make you go from one floor to another.

I'm not fond of recall to everywhere as it makes the world rather strange, like if areas didn't exist. But there are extremes not to reach. And to be able to go hunting the minute you log in, play 15 minutes and recall out to home is something very important in UO that attracts a lot of players.

There's a link with the BoS change because I think time consumption for time consumption is bad. If the game is time consumming in order to teach you something or because it's actually fun all the long, it's ok.

I won't debate on the fact Ilshenar needs to be markable or to be treated as a dungeon, because it's not that long to run there once. Now that's true that if you have to run in and out every 10-15 minutes, it's a bore.
