Yes there is a greater purpose for the Items that drop from the generals.
In about two and a half years there will be a summer cleaning event where these items will be worth about 500 points. This will happen right before they Launch SA!!!!!!!

I think your right, BUT it will be 50 points not 500. And you will need 600,000 to get anything good. So all those secures we are wasting, will turn out to be a smart move after all.

However, I've seen the weapons being pretty widely used. So if nothing else it's a means to get a usable weapon for many people.
The spellbooks seem to sell for a decent amount.
One good bet, as others have pointed out, is that the items may come in handy when Imbuing hits.
