I dont mind the ad banners but...
For god sake put some control onto what your advertising!!!!

Just spent an hour explaining about a film called the Human Centipead 2 because my daughter clicked a banner link on here.

For those that dont know about the film...dont ask!! Its disgusting and also X-rated.
Instill some controls or i'll be forced to lock here account.

Ummmm, there are parental control software apps as well, you know.

I do understand how shocking it is for a youngster to hit the wrong thing, but some proactive moves on your part can radically cut down the possibilities.

I looked it up out of curiosity, and honestly it's just a B horror flic, not even that bad of one it looks like (bad as in stuff it shows, it looks like a movie not worth watching however), and it's not X rated as you stated, it's just flat out not rated. (the difference being X rated is basicly porno, and unrated is the director just didnt get a rating for the film, which is common for this type of film from the UK). I don't really think it's inappropriate on a gaming site, if you don't want your kid running across such things though I highly suggest parental filters and adblock plus, and of course simply monitoring her while on the computer until she's old enough.

Regardless of parental controls, I agree with Slayvite in monitoring our own ads.

George with TGN is aware of our google ads issues, trust me :D

I'll send him this thread and your concerns. We're constantly calibrating the balance between google ads and server needs. Anything like this we make sure to forward on to him.

Thank you,

I agree with Karina. Also, I am trying to work toward a better advertising partnership, which will make our ads more predictable than Google Adsense ads.

In the meantime, if you feel that you need to use an ad blocker, that is your prerogative.

I use Seamonkey, if the picture is static, can rt-click, Block/unblock
Also did an add-in, FlashBlock - leaves an icon there in case you actually do want to see what's there. Stops that auto-play stuff

Thanks Airmid, for the most part i don't mind the ad's as they normally relevent to online gaming and i like to trust my daughter to use the internet wisely.
I agree while it isn't the most graphic of a film (you click it and watch the clips) having to have that conversation with your 12 year old daughter is one i'd rather not have had. Not to mention the ammount of grief i'm gonna get off her mum now :whip:

We run Human Centipede ads?
Excuse me while I comment on that outside Stratics...
(...)
Back.
We do apologise.
Please understand it's not something we can monitor 24/7 and it's run by an independent application/partnership whatever.
We will look into this and ask TGN (George) to look into this very closely.

(especially because it makes it hard for us to enforce "family oriented" rules while running such ads... *cough*)

doesn't Google offer a family-oriented (or at least halfway normal) ad product that doesn't have Roman orgies and Human centipede?

I usually disable ad-block on sites on regularly use, but I can't do that here.

The first Human Centipede is up on Netflix instant streaming. When your daughter started asking questions about Human Centipede 2, you should have just told her to go watch the first one on Netflix.

Human Centipede 2 is a lot easier to follow if you've seen the first, and I can understand your daughter's confusion.

Do I laugh? Do I ...cry? Virtually give you a stern eye?

I'm more confused than his daughter now! :rant2:

We really do take this seriously though and Syrus is right when he says we're checking on our options. Our other ad base was just as ample (?) in it's content but we will find the right balance.

The sooner I can get rid of Adsense, the better. Believe me. I'm just waiting on a developer to finish some things . . .

FF 9.x disables AdBlock and the add-on page states AdBlock is incompatible with FF 9.x. Been wanting to block all sorts of junk at work but to no avail.

It's not in the UK catalogue, which fills me with sadness.

Ever notice that some of the non-adult RPG/MMO games we get ads for, crib their ad art (which looks nothing like their game art) from Japanese computer fantasy porn games?

(I swear, I only noticed it because the non-hentai pics from the games make great spots to swipe character pics from for sigs and paper-RPG character sheets... Really....)

The whole online gaming advertising thing is interesting. Evony and Caesary are probably the most famous.

Gotta love the zero-creativity pondlife advert designers who think sex sells is the best way to sell a silly game. Especially one where if you try to start an orgy (Roman or otherwise) you'll probably get banned from their servers.

I imagine some of their new male customers are going to be rather disappointed. "I came for the boobies and all I got was these stupid catapults!"

You kinda wonder what some of them study at college when they all end up copying each other ;)

Like it or not, it's a tried and tested formula.

Ultima has used it also, although probably in more subtle ways.
I think everyone understands it's tried and tested, but a good marketing designer uses different tactics as and when they're appropriate. And there's a huge difference between advertising say lingerie and a game where sexual conduct would probably get you banned ;) And I've seen a lot of lingerie adverts that were totally child friendly and way sexier than the game banners heh.

The goal of advertising is to sell your product. IMHO if your adverts all look the same as everyone else's, tell you nothing about the product and users all block them with AdblockPlus so they don't see them, or your subsequent ad campaigns...I'd consider that to be a pretty conclusive fail :D

Finally got tired of the ads here for various reasons, the content being one of them. But I never put up ad block because since I couldn't pay for stratics anymore, I felt I should be contributing something for the service they provide. I don't have a problem that they make money from doing this (and if I had the time/money I'd be tempted to set up and run my own fan site).

But, it finally got to me and I installed ad block.

The attitude that you can install an adblock is kinda insulting tbh. Yes we could.. BUT we shouldnt have to. These Ad's along with other issues I have with one of the Admin's is the reason why I dont bother using Stratics that much anymore.

There is no excuse for showing adult orintated material on a website thats aimed at family/teen. Rather than wait for some developer to sort it out, how about this.. JUST TURN THE AD'S OFF!!

Or is that kinda too obvious to state?

Syrus has already stated our intent with ad services and what we're working towards. We have also acknowledged that ad block is an option yes but not one we want to fall back on to resolve some of the content.

Thanks for your patience :)
