I don't see the thought put into the decoration in this plot. The design is alright, everything just looks so thrown together. Those chests right at the entrance? YUCK. What an eyesore. Bravo for going for a more classic look and brownie points for it having an actual roof instead of a "rooftop garden" aka "I can't invest time in learning how to build rooves so I just throw colored flowers (i picked up off the ground @ WBB) up there and call it my rooftop garden".

Nice to finally see a housing article. On the other hand, it would have been nice for the Great Lakes native, first prize winner's home highlighted from UOLedger's contest instead.

Congrats Malag :)

I say nice things about ( in the News ) whomevers house I feature. I think everyone has different taste and are at different stages/levels in decor and design and I prefer to be encouraging and uplifting rather than critical ( that appears to be your job :) ).

Also I think it is refreshing to highlight a players plot that may not have every detail refined....those people win contests often and get recognition.

I liked it myself but if you have seen any of my homes you will understand I know close to nothing about such things .
:sad4:
I enjoy reading the news about any GL: house or event as always .

Seems I've hit a sore spot.

Everybody needs some critisism, especially if somebody finishes their house and goes and brags about it, and people want to see. And decorator/designer is like it's amazing, and then their friends are like eek.. It's like getting somebody's hopes up before Christmas saying you got them something they've wanted for a long time, and it wasn't what they thought it'd be.

Everybody knows I have my own personal tastes as to what I look for in a designed and decorated home. I'm sure you do, as well as anybody else does, slightly interested in the subject. My point in the original post was, I don't see anything original about the decoration. Most of the items and storage are poorly placed. Maybe you need examples of what I'm trying to say?

Why have a porch if you're going to block it just about completely off with statues that don't even go together? That you can't walk on?

Why have this grand entrance with a fountain and I don't even KNOW how many hedges stacked up all to lead to what? 400 stacked chests that aren't even all the same leaving you a one tile path to squeeze through?

You want me to say something nice, I can always find at least ONE thing nice to say about a home. OfLords, I like how you stacked the poppies on top of the lilles under and around your fountain.

We are very different indeed. I would just say the ONE nice thing and refrain from all the negative comments.

It is negative comments like these that make a person think twice before wanting their home featured in the News and makes me think twice too. Not everyone likes to be ripped apart nor has as hard of a shell as you seem to have.

The majority of plots in the game are not to my personal taste but again I focus on the positive and try to give support. Constructive critcism when worded kindly can be helpful. Then again not everyone wants it.
With more and more people leaving GL I feel now more than ever we should be embracing. I know you have shown acts of kindness before as I have witnessed them in game. I have also witnessed poisionous hatred from you.

I highly doubt the first houses you decorated were fab if you went back and had to live with them now. I know my first three ( though I thought they were the bomb at the time ) interior homes ( we could not design our own back then ) where not very good.
In those early days when I thought my interiors rocked and if someone were to say a lot of negative things about it would have bothered me. Older players at the time made polite suggestions in ways my homes could be better and I appreciated it. They were my friends however and it was said in game not on the boards for all to read. It is times like these that I am glad most people read the News from the main page and not the boards.

One must always remember we have a lot of males in this game and often males and females have a different design sensibility. needless to say I have been in amazing homes designed by males but I want to embrace everyones effort in decor and I wish you would also, or at least say the nice things and keep the poison to yourself. I can hope anyways.

I love how you're pretty much saying by giving somebody constructive critisism on a forum, is going to make somebody leave Great Lakes.

Whether or not you feature a home of a player, and I critisize it. We can't make people stay or leave, you know this. You've been around, you know if somebody's going to leave, they're going to leave. Maybe, just MAYBE you can prolong it, but that urge will always be there.

As for my first houses? I won't hijack the thread and post pictures of the earliest pictures I have, but you can see them on my myspace album which I've posted many times before. The earliest I have would be the one that won the Stratics Chesapeake Fall Home Decoration Contest back in oh, 2005 or so? That's pretty much when I started to get into decoration, seeing how everything I thought was fun in the game, was continuously turning to crap.

Also I think it is refreshing to highlight a players plot that may not have every detail refined....those people win contests often and get recognition.
I'm also going to go back to this statement. You're a NEWS reporter. You're all YAY Great Lakes, yay we're getting a population, awe we're losing players. It's your job to report news about our shard. And I'd say 2 out of 3 winners in a contest - clearly in an area you're interested in- would be something you'd report about.

Have a sparkling day! I know I will.

Well, not everyone can be as wonderful, talented, tasteful and great as you are ( even as a young player ).

Now we know why the recent design contest winners appear to be so important to you as you are proud of your previous contest wins and have by your owns words reminded the great people of GL many times of your win.
Well....once again...CONGRATS to you !

Enough on this thread from me. I just hope you refrain from negative comments on future home decor articles.

Me posting had nothing to do with ANY of my houses. I could care less if I win or lose a contest, I decorate because it's fun, and happens to be something I'm slightly good at still. You brought me, and my houses into the picture.

Kind of like your Luna houses, or California-plastic-surgery-lifestyle, eh?

You're right about one thing though, enough with the thread. I've got band practice to get to shortly. tata.

I love how you're pretty much saying by giving somebody constructive critisism on a forum, is going to make somebody leave Great Lakes.

To be fair, while your initial post does include some criticism that could be construed as 'constructive', it is delivered in such a negative tone that it would be difficult for a reader to actually take anything constructive away after having read it.

To offer you some constructive criticism:

You say that you 'don't see the thought put into decoration'. The problem with this statement is that the house is clearly not simply a random collection of items, therefore it is clear that some thought has been placed into the design. Take the kitchen area: The counter design, the 'sudsy' water, the nearby food ready for preparation...there is a clear theme and an attempt to decorate beyond the merely functional. Thus, your statement is contrary to the evidence at hand, and you offer no 'constructive' alternative to your observation. You go on to say that 'everything just looks so thrown together'. A more constructive way to communicate these thoughts would be to say that 'there are several areas of the home that appear cluttered, and that the overall effect distracts the viewer from the design elements and decorations without giving the appearance that the clutter is a 'planned effect'.

Your next substantive statement is an example, I assume, of what you mean by 'thrown together': You do not like the chests at the entrance. This is the most 'constructive' element of your 'criticism' - you have specifically described an element of this home that you find problematic. Unfortunately, you completely cloud up any 'constructive' value in your statement with words like 'YUCK' and 'eyesore'.

Not all criticism is constructive; most, in fact, is simply criticism. Constructive criticism is actually not as easy to offer as most people assume. Overtly negative statements have a tendency to undermine constructive intent.

By the way, you wouldn't like my home. I happen to love rooftop gardens, having spent some of my childhood growing up in a high-rise apartment with a rather elaborate rooftop garden; I also begrudge the loss of living (and decorating!) space necessary to put up a 'traditional' roof.

Somebody needs to tell people the truth, I do. If it's negative, good, it's meant that way. Maybe they'll learn something from it.

Rooftop gardens, when built correctly, and built for such, are quite lovely. But not when they're 18x18 in size.
