Apparently reading comprehension skills are not a requirement to be a Mod.

It's already been mentioned several times that it creates an imbalance between old and new players.

Leaving HCI off the shields would probably benefit most of us more since we already have several shields with HCI which will continue to increase in value.

So your "I want it" statement, much like most of your statements is completely wrong.

Theres always going to be an imbalance between old and new players. A new player cant afford a 100 mil suit so lets just take off all propeties and go back to pre aos then? a 3 mil shield is the thing creating the imbalance though? doesnt make sence

The difference is new players cannot obtain the shields through normal gameplay... people who got it while it was available were able to and there was no reason to remove it.

Sorry, but I have to shoot this statement down. I have said it time and time again that any new player can make at least 5 - 10 mil gold in an night once they find out what to look for and where to look. With 5-10 mil any player can find a shield thats 10 HCI 10 DCI FC1 with reists OR for 2 mil or less they can get a 15 HCI 15 DCI -1 FC SC shield with resists.

I think this shield was added as a comprimise to the issue...and I also still think imbuing will be the next big comprimise. Until the expansion comes out I am going to have to say DONT look to hard for it because there must be some coding issues preventing its reintroduction. (recall the old dupes rerelease lately? this is a good example of bad things that happen when you toy with 11 year old code and dont fully understand it.)

Almost all of this is irrelevant. It's MAGICAL STUFF. MAGIC.

QUOTE=Wallenstein;889613]So true.. I have always wondered this myself. Items in Ultima Online have very odd properties. For example-- like you said-- a ring or bracelet can help you with Hit Chance Increase but a shield cannot. A half apron (Crimson Cincture) can provide you with bonus Dexterity and Hit Point Regeneration. Sandals (Vine Cord; I know they were removed, but the fact is that they were added to the game at one point) can provide resists in all areas..

I guess they are balancing the issue of "well we took out HCI on shields.. now that we realize it's somewhat more realistic this way we'll leave it out, but we won't take HCI off of jewelry since the removal was unintended in the first place. One mistake is better than potentially three."[/QUOTE]

There's a big difference between a Crimson and a HCI shield.

The Crimson can still be gotten through normal gameplay, the HCI shield cannot.

Not everyone wants to buy their stuff from someone else. People do still like to go out and earn their own items.
BUT!! HCI can still be obtained on loot in normal gameplay am I correct? Its not an imbalance its an inconvenience. I can have as much as 70 HCI with out a shield (altho the cap is 45). Wheres the imbalance?

*EDIT* and you wonder why I used the CC as an example? I can buy a 15hci shield with 10dci (flat mods) for as low as 8m vs a spawning item that costs me 14m. So although you complain they arent cheap, you're more willing to waste money on an object that gives you less benefit than the very shield you want thats half the expense.

You fail to grasp the simplest concepts.

The ONLY way for a new player to get a HCI/DCI/FC 1 shield is to buy it from another player.

That same new player can get a Crimson for ZERO gold by simply doing content that is still available.

Um no. UO has a STEEP learning curve. I still do not make 5-10 mil a night (unless I get an artie drop) because I either do not have the time or it is just too tedious to do so. I still think it should be added there has been no legit reason to keep it out at all. As there was no legit reason to take it out.

This is going to be a rather strange response.

First, I would agree that UO has a steep learnign curve. I think it pretty much always has. But, even if a new player cannot get enough money to buy said shield in a day, is that really that big of a deal? The concept of "I have to be able to get anything I want in a day (or even a week)" makes for one boring game. It should take time and effort to get those things you desire. Otherwise, you're bored within a week and cancel the account. And there's nothing good about losing customers.

Second, I'm hopeful that one of the things that imbuing will allow will be adding attributes to weapons and armor that you wouldn't see onthem otherwise, such as HCI on shields. Heck, even be able to add a skill bonus to your helmet if you want. Would make suits further customizable and unique.

Lastly, and this is what makes this response so weird, is that after I've said what was said above, I see no reason why they ever removed HCI from shields and wouldn't mind seeing it back.

Wow that statement was like pulling a rabit out of your ass. Do you not think I cannot grasp that? That I am uncapable of comprehending lame excuses for crying imbalance? Like I said before. Its not imbalance but it is inconvenient for people like you to work for something.

PvPers didn't just have suits. They built them. And its easier now than ever with the abundent amount of armor and items available to anyone. And you think having a single piece of armor (shield) with a set amount of HCI is going to make all the difference? or is it the fact that you just want one because someone else has a piece of armor you dont have? That justifies your wants enough to grief prized market items.

Trying reading the whole thread before making dumb statements like this one.

I already own several shields with HCI, DCI and FC 1.

At least you finally admit to your true intentions. My arguement, unlike yours, is not motivated by greed.

Greed is never justification for anything. It's selfish and nothing less.

There's no good reason why HCI shouldn't be put back in so it's available to everyone to be able to receive as loot from a monster just like everyone else did.

Oh, and I do have several HCI/DCI shields, just in case the question comes up.

I understand UO has a steep learning curve, but all one need do is ask.

When the DF dies in doom keep your char in the room until the body goes all loot. (most ppl dont loot) Using this method alone will net you the gold you or anyone else is looking for. (btw...my friend just quit going down...he made a total of around 300 mil in 4 weeks...going about 1-3 hours at a time...on a newb char...on a new account.)

As far as the *legit reasons* they took it out...at one time it was a serious balance issue according to UO staff. Trouble again about bringing it back can probably be found in the coding...no one really knows what bugs will show up again (or what stuff will break) if this coding gets restarted. If it were as simple as flipping a switch I am positive the coding would have been turned on by now. (as a long time vet you are probably aware that everytime something is *broken to get fixed*...something bad happens...and as much as I want HCI back on shields I dont want another dupe readded.)

Another way to make a dexxer suit for 1 mil that will own a mage with a 100 mil suit. I love it. Lets make all this deXXer gear drop on eetins so a mage will never be able to kill anyone.

You tell me how a bracelet or ring does????????

And besides I can hit you better if I have a good shield to push you out of the way or to hold your sword away while I stab at you..... It can help me hit alot.... keeping me clear from damage and from having to block with my sword to actually USE my sword offensively to hit rather than to parry thereby increasing the frequency that I can use my sword in an offensive manner.... So I think it adding to my chance to hit you is very relevant. Perhaps it's an exceptionally good shield....

Actually if you had a shied large enough to effectively do that all you would be able to do is stab. Even the lightest of shields weighed in on average around 3lbs 3 oz which was a simple wooden buckler which was common in 16th century Italy. To get the effectiveness your talking about you'd need a large pageant shield made of Steel not wood for durability which would weigh between 7 and 11 pounds minimum. If you want to get an idea of what that would feel like go get 2 common red clay bricks and hold them up for about 5-10 minutes.

So if you want to argue HCI on shields based on blocking and restraining ability, you'll need to only have HCI on Tower and Kite Shields in UO. Oh but if that comes back then put a Dex penalty on them and have all weapons except the Fencing class one's deal bludgeoning damage (macing) since people in armor rarely died from slashes and cuts...usually it was broken ribs and concussions. Don't forget anyone with a Composite Bow, Heavy Cross Bow, or Yumi should get automatic Armor ignore..since these we designed to be effective in penetrating armor from long range. Should I go on about how silly trying to equate real life things to a fantasy midevil game setting is?

Still no responses from anyone higher up? If it is a problem in coding well I'd like to at least know and not here some BS reason. Also HCI shields should not be a prize market... and another thing... most people on this site play a lot and know a lot about the game. You think a new casual player will know a df has the highest loot table? Do you think I am talking only about pvp suits? No I just think it is stupid they removed it and I have seen no real reason to keep it off.

Just to clarify...this has been brought up to be a coding issue by the devs on several occasions in the past. Both in Q&A form and post. Wilki I believe was the last one to tackle this question a couple years back.

FYI...I want HCI back too...but I want a dupe/bug free client even more. If leaving HCI out till the advent of imbuing takes care of this...I am a happy camper. (again...I gave you GREAT alternatives to getting gold to buy one...why are you posting here instead of being in Doom looting?)

I have a bunch of awesome shields with HCI. It is jsut something that bugs me. I do agree though if it prevents duping (though how would it?) I do not mind i'd just like a quick response.

It bug me too...but its been 5+ years since this happened.

How would it prevent duping?

Dunno really, but considering how the last dupe was reintroduced...I am willing to say that anything is possible in UO.

Will there be another dupe in UO?

Most certainly, considering nothing is recoded...it is all just *patched*. Consider a game of Jenga, whenever you *patch* you risk toppling your structure. The same idea applies with bugs/dupes whenever old coding is changed or turned off/on (patched).

Will you get a response?

This matter was changed 5+ years ago yes? (I cant put a date to it) I honestly dont think there is anyone who can answer a question dating back that far without citing old material from Wilki for instance. Since neither stratics nor EA/Mythic have the best method for storing old notes...heh...I think you get the drift.
