I would assume that's because they'll be releasing those at a later time. They are just "greyed" out for now.

I think you're right... I tried guessing to see if those should be linking up to anything and I didn't hit any content.

I have a little bit of a concern with the flying ability. I'm hoping there's a "takeoff time" associated with going from walking to flying to prevent people from archery dismounting you and then running you down while chaining specials.

hhmmm...

I'm only getting a little story. I don't see additional links to skills and or see any pictures. I see a dark main background, the story within what looks like 2 dark colored walls on either side. I also EA related small links at the top and bottom(WHO and TOS)

I can only assume it's my security settings?

... why do the gargoyles look even LESS like Ultima Gargoyles now? As if it wasn't bad enough that you're apparently dead-set on keeping the female ones, that is.

If you need a good reference for Ultima Gargoyles, just use Ascension. I hate so much about that game, but one of the few things I can't possibly find fault with is the art design.

It's early so I might be wrong and not quite awake... but "there" in the following sentence should be replaced with "their" I think.

"In Fact the only thing they wear that is colorful is "there" jewelry."

http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/uo/uosa/images/conceptart/UOSA_concept-01.jpg

Would like to see it fixed so at least new players will take UO seriously.

editing to add:

Also the ESRB logo at the bottom, the link is off. http://www.uoherald.com/stygianabyss/www.esrb.org
Not to mention "histroy", "pround", "if fact", "jewlery". Seriously, who the heck did not proofread that, it's sad. The remark about neon colored clothing was amusing, although the way it's phrased doesn't quite sound right.

And the ESRB link is a newb web developer mistake, they didn't include the "http://" in the href.

That description depicts gargy attire...

It says that they are hairless and that their horns come in several varieties and are usually left un adorned. That begs the question of gargies loosing a current item slot? I also didn't see anything that could have been a gorget.

Head slot - ?
Neck slot - ?
Chest slot - the shoulder pads? or the upper part of that belt thing? or the whole belt thing?
Legs slot - that belt thing? or just the lower part of the belt thing? or the boots?
Arm slot - the arm bands/shoulder pads?
Hands slot - the bracers?
Foot slot - an item property boot slot since I see a lack of head/neck item property slots?

...just curious...

another question...

The 'story' on the main SA pages descirbed gargies as 'clawed'... might that suggest that gargies with the wrestling skill have a higher wrestling base dmg that current humans/elves?

Since gargoyles are going to have armor unique to their race, they will probably have the same number of slots open for itemization as human/elves. Probably just going to be in different physical locations.

There's a banner on uoherald.com. Although the link from it doesn't work, it still says "WEBSITE NOW LIVE!", so I wouldn't really consider that "jumping the link".

Despite all that, it's inexcusable for grammar and spelling mistakes like that to get through for an expansion that is so important to UO's future. People who are that bad at spelling and grammar usually know it and accept it, and should have others proofread their written work.

the description on that first page says that gargoyles wear very little color and shun bright (ex. glacial blue) colors. The only color they wear is in the jewels they wear.

They remind me more of the one's that came out with Third Dawn, and if you'll remember that era it was mentioned that the gargoyles we fight as monsters are only distantly related to the ones in the city in Ilsh. Maybe the Abyss Gargoyles are yet a 3rd related yet different variety.

The Ultima Gargoyles all CAME from their land on the other side of the Underworld. The ones in 6 which truly introduced the race fictionwise looked like the classic Ultima ones, and you met most of those in said lands.

If anything, the ones in Ilsh and the old lands should be the ones to have their looks changed, since nothing should be different for the Gargoyle lands between UO and the original series.. you can't say it was some "environmental cahnge" on their end caused by the creation of the Underworld, either, since the UO timeline is currently somewhere around the end of Ultima 4, which is when that was made (even if the story is closer to 5), which caused the big changes there. There is NOTHING that should cause those Gargoyles to look any differemt, or suddenly have a second gender.

Quote:

Note "basic competence".
I think it means that Gargoyles will have a minimum of ~40 skill points for free in Throwing, but they will need to spend skill points normally to get higher than that. Similar to Jack-of-all-Trades for humans and free passive Detect for elves.
Same thing for Mysticism.
Actually, from the current list it looks like gargoyles won't be anything special in PvP.
According to Town Hall comments, "Flying" is just a free ethereal mount with a different animation.
"Berserk" just looks like "Divine Fury" with a different name.
And the other two abilities are just free minimum skill points - something that humans and elves also have.
On the other hand, the "Master Artisan" ability as currently described means that nobody is ever going to use a human or elf to enhance or imbue, and every crafter will become gargoyle to stay in business. Unless the real meaning of the ability is this: "the chance for non-catastrophic failure is reduced, but the chance for catastrophic failure chance is still the same". Which means that all races still have the same basic chance to eventually enhance an item successfully, but gargoyles would waste less resources before the ultimate success (or failure...). Which kind of balances out the bonuses for elves and humans in resource gathering.

I dislike the screenshots, they're trying to please all the KR haters by putting in 2D art, except that it looks low res and pixelated beside the (in my opinion) much better KR art. Hopefully we'll continue to have the option to choose, because I dearly want to stick with the (ofcourse, still in my opinion) better KR art.

Don't you mean the KR art looks out of focus and blurry next to the crisp 2D art? Pixelated and identifiable is better than rescaled, blurry, and smudged.

And i'm not a KR hater, either.

I was under the impression that they intended to link it with the SA banner that was at the top of the site. WHen I clicked it, nothing happened, so I started guessing.

Yesterday they said they were releasing the site today. I certainly had no intention of "hacking" their site. I just thought I was presenting a workaround for a dead link.

Those screenshots look much much better to me, I'm not seeing much of any blur on there now. It does take quite a few graphics from 2D, but I'd rather have crisp clean graphics than an oil painting.

I'm pretty sure those screenshots are from the KR client. They're zoomed out and the naked avatar looks KR. Well... I guess it could be the SA client :)

No, I find that the 2D art looks really small, simple and pixelated in comparison to what the KR art looks like. It just looks really low resolution in comparison. Always has been, and it really shows (at least to me) in KR when I put on legacy art - It just doesn't look right, looks kindof flat and simple.

I agree. I'm glad they're doing Stygian Abyss and give them two thumbs up for adding more content, skills, monsters etc.

But the screen shots are not a seller. I hope they improve the graphics even more than what is currently available in the KR client. I came back after years of playing to check out the KR client because of the improved graphics and I love it. If they can get even better graphics I will be even more happy.

But for a selling point I definately think they need to put the best screenshots/graphics they have and not put what is basically Ultima VII circa 1992 graphics.

I want to see screenshots of the SA Client and whether or not there will be an improvement from KR :scholar:

Based on screen shots the new client looks promising. I would have rather seen the KR landscape art stay and the mobs and items reverted to 2d instead but this looks much better than KR currently does.

THIS NEEDS TO BE REPEATED!

* No blur. Get rid of the antialiased blended adges of ALL art. Give us contrast and outlines just like in 2D.

* Complete classic 2D interface. No chat box, classic radar map, no portrait bar, no targetting system, classic containers, loose spell and skill icons that snap together like in old 3D, no hotbars. Classic healthbars that snap together.

* Drakes and brown dragons. (still not in KR?)

* Fix scaling issues, and art size inconsistencies. Pack beetles too large for example.

* Please give me back my cool 2D reptalon. Get rid of the ugly clown nosed one from KR that doesnm't even jump and flap it's wings when running.

* fix the overly smooth floaty movement. Add back the "steps" as in 2D.

Give us what KR should have been, 2D with higher resolution graphics. Not a blurry lower resolution UO with a totally different and generic UI, and where nothing looks or works the way it had for 10 years.

I fear the pics are KR from last year and NOT SA client. All ideas, all skills, all art, still from last year. All CatHat's art?

I'm still waiting to get blown away. I'm kinda excited, but it's like giving a starving man some crumbs.

disagree, KR outdoor landscape looks 1000000X better than 2d, as do the character models. Only thing that's ugly about KR is the blurry buildings/backpack items.

Think how rediculously stupid the 2d landscape will look zoomed in.

I think you better get yourself to the eye doctor as the KR landscape looks like SMEG you can't tell the trees from the grass all one ugly sloppy blur... infact... I think it looks much like a REALLY crappy watercolor all washed out.... Or art by that one fellow that paints with dots.

KRs landscape is varied, its got stuff in it. 2D is sadly, a checkered selection of (for grass - Since that seems to be the issue) black and green dots really. I think what really only needs to be done, is for the focus to be brought in a bit.

From what I've saw in Dev shots and such, they have the ability to do so - But it was probably changed for time/size/performance constraints. Hopefully they'll reintroduce it, since it is nice - And other than nostaglia, you can't say that 2D is at least as varied in its look.

KR terrain art is SOOOOO much better than 2d terrain art.

2d terrain art is too FFIV-FFVI SNES quality... good for its time or on a DS, but not in a next-gen MMOG client.

To revert the KR terrain artwork back to 2d would be a horrible mistake.

I am ... speechless at the dungeon art. That is the old Pre-LBR 3D dungeon art! Dermott might be able to dig something up on this, but I am positive it is extremely close to the original 3D landscape art (which was BEAUTIFUL and very recognizable as being UO ... just touched up :D )

(I don't mind the KR terrain art, but it lacks polish and cripsness in alot of places ... I think this art is an excellent compromise.)

I am not 100% certain, but it LOOKS to me that the screen shots are done in KR using the Legacy Graphics option (the floortiles/terrain are all KR artwork, the iron fencing/gates are 2d as are the walls it looks like) The brick floor I KNOW is KR because I have that's a portion of the floor of my porch that the forge sits on. The mountains are KR as well and have MUCH more color depth than even the original 3d mountains.

It doesn't look to me like they used the early Third Dawn landscaping in these shots, but to be fair, the main portion of that landscape that I really remember (pre-LBR change to 2d artwork) was the grass and a bit of the mountains.

Looking back through my old UOSU screenshots from Third Dawn, I can definitely state that the artwork used is not the original 3d terrain artwork and is KR artwork.

Aw, I know it isnt exact, but it is the basic feel. Some of those floor tiles have a stronger feel of 2D, but I know they are KR. My reference is that it totally brings to mind that nice mix that Third Dawn had before they put in the 2D terrain (which broke my heart!)

BTW ... i am totally jealous that you have screenies from that time. All my 3D screenies are from right before the client was closed ... a couple from that very day.

I have screenshots from April of 2000 forward (not an amazing amount, but some early UO:R stuff, 9/11 in game tribute pics, Early Third Dawn pics, the effects of swapping Landscape artwork into the 2d client (didn't cause any "stump hacks", but it did make the landscape a bit more... interesting), a lot of the hueing changes made from #D beta up to final (when metal wouldn't hue, to when it would, to the first attempts at anti-aliasing) and so on.

The old look of studded leather armor (which was by far some of the best armor art ever created in the 3d client and got ruined by the LBR models) I also have...

Also have a few pics of the early 3d earth elems (when they were piles of moving rocks and not humanoid in shape).

For KR I have a lot of the later beta pics, some of the pics when you could run it in a widescreen aspect, pics with the early tilesets and so on.

Not a huge collection, but a pretty good look back.
