Deathwatch Beetle

I am currently in the process of training a deathwatch beetle just because. They only go to a 4 slot and only have poison as a choice for magic training. I found something interesting though while going from a 1-2 slot. They have a poison spit ability that always them to poison from range and it doesn't require them to have poisoning skill. When I finished the training I was able to add poisoning which I haven't done and im not sure im going to. Is this some kind of glitch or bug or maybe just an oversite that he is able to poison without the poisoning skill or more of a weird pet specific quirk?

I haven't fully decided what im going to do with him yet im going to mess around on the test center with him to see how I wanna go further with him. Im also not sure what the range on the poison spit is but it might be useful as a pirating pet in the future. The current lvl of poison it does are "extreme ill" and "stumbles in confusion and pain" which I believe are lvl 2 and 3 but im not completely sure on that. Im curious if I add poisoning skill to him if that will affect the spit at all.

Anyone have any other bits of info on these or their spit?

Interesting find. I have added Deathwatch Beetles to the Bestiary for you to help with planning out your pet (I know you asked awhile ago, sorry it took so long): Trainable Animal Bestiary | uo-cah.com

From what I can tell, the Poison Spit is reactive only (meaning it can trigger when your pet takes damage). You are correct on your poison levels, it is applying Level 2 and Level 3 Poison with the ability. They can also get rune corruption which is nice. Adding the Poisoning Magical does not remove the Poison Spit ability. Unknown if higher Poisoning skill will affect the Poison Spit -- I am currently skilling one, currently at ~58 poisoning and still only level 2/3 poison from the ability.

It is unfortunate they cannot go to 5 slots, their starting intensity is lower than a Giant/Fire beetle. I was sad they were not mountable until I saw what they looked like in the CC, then it made sense... stuff of nightmares.

Does this "poison spit" move show on the lore screen or is this a secret ability? Does it work like venomous bite or poison breath? Or is it single target?

I didn't know they could get RC, shame they only go to 4 slots.

the poison spit doesn't show up on the lore screen so a secret ability from what I can tell. I've never used venomous bite so no idea but im pretty sure its a single target attack.

Interesting. I wonder if any other animals have hidden abilities. Too bad raptors lose their "call" attack post tame. Some people posted a while back that stygian drakes drink potions (you can hear it). Not sure which potion type.

Not a problem I ment to start working on it earlier but with the pirating and saving up cargos for a triton I just didn't have the time to work on him. I actually like the way they look in CC so cute and cuddly.

So got my little Beetle up to 100 Poisoning, it does not affect the potency of the poison spit ability. The ability seems to favor level 2 poison, with a chance at level 3.

It is a reactive ability (fires when enemies attack the beetle) and I was able to get the ability to fire up to 10 tiles away. It is single target only, and does no initial damage, just attempts to apply Level 2/3 Poison. It triggers on debuffs as well as damage. It also does not use any mana when it fires.

There are a few known ones. Ki-Rin will shoot a lightning bolt at nearby enemies if their rider drops below ~30% health. Unicorns are immune to Poisons. Deadmares have "trick". Bane Dragons have their well known poison ability. Stygian Drakes drink potions. Skree will use Magery and Mysticism spells unless you change their magical (only Mysticism shows on lore page as active). Might be some others that I am missing.
