Legends just had an event on Saturday and EM Avalon removed that from the Town Criers after the event. The next Event isn't till the 29th and I'm sure she'll update the Town Criers this week as she usually keeps them current.

Sweethearts calm down and breathe. We aren't attacking the EMs, the Dev team, or anything/anyone. What we are unhappy about is the fact we are being referred to FaceBook. Yes, dears we all know about the town crier system. Between my sister and myself we have SEVEN active accounts, all accounts have houses and EVERY house has a Sherry the Mouse locked down in it.

Some people do not take kindly to change, others simply do not like something being forced on them.

Okay you do realize it costs money to have a website even one that is poorly maintained and updated such as UO.com. They have to pay a company to host the website, they have to pay someone to maintain the site security to keep it safe from hackers and so forth. They pay this either monthly or yearly. This ain't a GoDaddy.com 1 dollar a month website. This is a commercial site owned and used for a business. Therefore they pay commercial rates. A rough ballpark estimate would be $200 to $300 dollars per month. okay if they're not even going to use the website for announcements the why not scrap it and put the money into the game.

Okay business accounting states you ALWAYS have labor, materials, and overhead. Some are fixed costs and some are not fixed.

To me it looks like a cheap way to cut some overhead because FaceBook is free.

Let me stop here and state that I do not like being deceived into using it, by being told by the EM that

circumstances beyond my control have dictated we move announcements and other news to facebook

That announcement leads the reader to believe that this came down from Mesanna or someone of authority at Broadsword.

Fine if they want to cut some overhead expenses then yes, please get rid of "Jurassic" UO.com and put the money toward the game its self.

However they are also going alienate parts of their customer base because the primary UO customer base demographic is between the ages of 35-55. While this is the largest part of the population that uses Facebook, we have been conditioned by Origin/EA/Mythic/Bioware/Broadsword that personal info and UO are a taboo. We are now asked to suddenly slam on the brakes and disengage SEVENTEEN YEARS of conditioning.

Think of it like this: For seventeen years you were told if you eat chocolate you will die. Then suddenly the doctor tells you can eat chocolate and you won't die. (Yes I know a bit dramatic but it serves my propose).
You are NOT gonna run out and devour the entire contents of the Lady Godiva Chocolatiers. You will be afraid, hesitant and yes resistant. This is the normal human response when a person is asked to do something that goes against the way they have been conditioned.

I feel UO would be better served to use the in game announcement system, the website and stratics. They should ease the UO population into using Facebook if they want to use it. Start simple contests, post in game screenshots, . . .consistent baby steps.

I stand by what I said, This is an extremely poor management decision on the part of UO management.

That is NOT AN ATTACK. Well known companies have made poor management decisions:

Microsoft: Windows ME and Vista

Apple: The Newton

GM: the ignition switch problem

RadioShack: staying stuck in 1985

I just hate to see UO end up on the "DOH" list as I like to call it.

For the facebook thing my theory is: Mesanna couldn't work it out within Broadsword, so she had resort to her own little thing on facebook. Just as it didnt work out with EA or like it's never working out for the Mythic store and her.

If privacy is an issue with you concerning other people just make a dummy account. Every site has cookies and such (like here) and your info is tracked every step of the way on the internet. Google and all the rest track everything you do. It reminds me of Grandpa not wanting to use that new fangled tv remote or something lol.

I will say all the different sites thing is stupid. There's uo.com, there's facebook, I assume there's still EM sites. You should be able to go to UO.com and say click a legends link to go to for official info. If that takes you to facebook or whatever fine. But there should be one clearly defined way to do this. Clearly UO is distancing themselves from Stratics so we should be brought up to speed on exactly what the deal is and tie it all together at UO.com with links.

My premise is simple. Seems odd to have to constantly leave the game to get information about what is going on in game. There should be better use of in game methods to get upcoming event information out so everyone playing can see it and have time to prepare.

A player shouldn't have to search or know about multiple third party websites, facebook , forums links, back alley conversations, etc... to find out about what is occurring in game.

I can answer both of these at the same time. I have no problem viewing FB, just hate all the scrolling. But it seems that UO has neglected its own web site and to me that should be the #1 priority is to keep its own web site up-to-date. Google Ultima Online and you get UO.com as the first entry. I heard some people talking about Ultima Online and wanted to see it what it was about. OMG this site is garbage, guess they really don't want people playing. Welp on to next game i heard about. Use whatever means you want to to get the word out but DO NOT neglect the other sites that got you here. UO.COM needs lots of love and it is beyond me that Broadsword is working on DAoCs web site and they can't take the time to work on UOs web site.

I liked how EvE Online handled this (back when I played it). You could actually open up a web browser in-game to their knowledge base. Not sure they have the ability to put together anything like that, but I always liked that feature when I had questions.

Other sites don't gather information from you and sell it to anyone and everyone. Other sites don't ruin peoples lives ... Other sites don't make it super easy to tempt and lure children away from homes..... other sites don't make it so easy to track your every move and even find out exactly where you live, work, and go for fun so sick people can find you easily... Other sites haven't taken thousands of jobs away from people. Granted much of the "evils" Facebook has wrought were brought on by their own users stupidity or ignorance... Facebook has cost jobs in many more ways. Taking away the small surveys from families looking for an easy second income... many surveys just aren't done anymore because they can gather all the information they want just by getting it off facebook/twitter... Now the only ones getting paid are the fat cats running facebook... No one gets paid for their opinions much anymore since Facebook pretty much owns your life and everything about you.

But the fact remains that without Facebook much of the destruction would not have been as easy and many lives could have been spared. Now it's almost a chicken and egg thing but honestly Facebook has made criminals lives easier... and has broadened their scope of sickness to new levels. Are you aware that when you post a picture to Facebook from your phone that it imbeds in the picture information from your phone like the location of the picture? Yes that's right if you have your Location turned on on your phone and snap a picture with it ... part of that data for the picture includes the GPS location of exactly where you were standing when you took the picture. So your childrens school, your home, the playground and even your childs bedroom location is imbedded in that picture for perverts to get should they gain access to your account or just find the picture on the web.... and it might not be through your Facebook... someone you know may have copied that picture and posted it somewhere else without you knowing...

Just a heads up, EVERYBODY gathers your information. From your cable or satellite company, your grocery chain, restaurants, your cell phone company, to your ISP. Heck even your bank. Also, with certain aps, even your friends can track you through your phone. Just sayin'.
