try making a totally fake account with 100 percent fake info. the results are very disturbing. still suggests your actual family and friends in people you may know. data collection is a very scary thing nowadays.
I have a fake fb account actually (I have a seperate email/facebook for signing up for stuff so any spam/pestering is away from my real stuff), and the only friend suggestions it has are friends of my actual account, which is the only friend my fake account has. Before I friended myself it didn't suggest anyone I know as a friend. I do all of my fake accounts on Firefox and my real stuff on Chrome to keep the data separate.
Of course, you don't have to be a facebook member to visit facebook pages, so no worries.
But really, I don't know why this sort of thing bothers anyone. You don't have to interact with it, you don't have to look at ads (let alone click them) you don't have to invite friends, or accept invites. Honestly, when it comes to having your data mined and used to try and improve your experience/sell to you better it's pretty unavoidable unless you take some fairly extreme steps, which would include never using anything but cash to make purchases IRL. Everyone tracks you. It's just how the info age works, and its not even such a bad thing.
I'm sure someone will "set me straight" with a long winded and emotional spiel about how facebook is going to come to my house and punch me in the nuts, and rob me of my way of life, nay my very soul, but whatever.
(to clarify, I have a fb account, but I don't use it, I just keep it up so people I'm not in close contact with can get a hold of me if they need/want to. I used to use it regularly, but I decided it was, like most online experiences, a shallow and sort of depressing exercise in addiction. Much like these forums, which I have several times quit for the same reasons. Despite my dislike for the site, I think people tend to get a bit histrionic when it comes to facebook, usually for no real reason.
