House Resizing Issue

Tanager

I have not found anything about this anywhere, so perhaps it is a new issue.

I was under the impression that resizing a home dropped everything in the home to the ground, where anyone could then pick it up.

In two separate instances on Siege, one in each client, a home was resized. The contents appeared briefly under the new sign - and then promptly VANISHED. In one case, what was on the front steps remained. If this is normal, then please ignore this post. If this is a bug, however, I wanted folks to know about it and beware!

A lot was lost.

why would you resize while stuff was in the house? Regardless, yes a couple years back they changed something to where if you place or resize over items most will vanish.

Because you only have one character and their bank box on Siege with which to store items for the resizing. A bloodthirsty friend or two on hand, plus tracking skill, and you need not be concerned with losing anything that falls to the ground.

However, thank you for the information. They need to change the warning gump.

This is news to me too! Did you check the new house sign to see if maybe it went into the moving crate?

One of my tricks is to use boats. Place as many boats as you need and move your belongings from the house to a boat. You might have to move your stuff twice, but hey, it works and it's low risk.

I did check the crate, it was empty. There are many, many ways I could have avoided the loss, yes - if I had known resizing was broken.

However, the reason for resizing in the first place was because a rare and valuable lantern had fallen under the home's foundation while I was decorating. I couldn't pick it up cuz it was out of sight, nor could I lock it down (to retrieve) because it wasn't in the house. Going to customize mode did not kick it to the curb. I tried everything I could think of. Then I spent precious time waiting for a GM before I realized it was Easter Sunday. My shiny new lantern was about to decay right in front of me.

I scrambled to secure most of my possessions. However, I left my com deed box and its crafting contents to relative chance, as well as most of the common decorations. Plants, furniture, the like. I was in a hurry, and decided that taking the time to deed everything up and move it would take too long. The risk of anyone getting away with anything was very minimal. Unlike Trammel, if some one tries to take something they would be hunted down within two steps. You can only send so much to the bank in that time - while you're running. Can't send anything at all if you're trying to hopscotch a massively heavy container. Can't just stand there holding the container either, even if you're hidden. You die. IDOCs on Siege are interesting shard events, often bringing out entire guilds :p

But I digress.

The com box and its contents are replaceable. What got me upset was some rubble that I must have overlooked somewhere that was destroyed by this bug. I'm not complaining about the loss. At the time I was pretty red faced angry at a bug that caused me to lose all my crafting materials and very rare rubble because of a SECOND bug. But I got over it.

I just wanted to let folks know, in case it wasn't common knowledge. Since I was not able to find anything on Google, I decided that it was not, in fact, common knowledge. Don't suppose it matters much except to Siege tho, hah. Don't suppose any other shard would resize a house with stuff in it. So I don't expect this bug to receive any attention whatsoever... specially if it's already been a couple years, according to Scribbles.

But at least there does now exist a recent post on Stratics concerning the issue.

yeah, siege is a tough one. Next time i would try putting everything in some packies and putting the packies some where safe while resizing. Perhaps a boat wouldnt be a bad idea either.

UO has never been great about making posts about changes like this. For the most part its because they didnt realize the change happened. When they change one thing about 20 other things un related change.

Sorry for your loss pal, hope all is well.

Yes - the lantern WAS saved :)

It was snatched up by a friend after the house dropped, but BEFORE I placed the new (same sized resized) one. It was the only valuable thing that I thought was at risk; I hadn't noticed the rubble. SO that's something to add - it is the placing of the new house that actually destroys the items. Interestingly tho, they were moved to under the sign like usual for about a second before vanishing into the ethersphere.

As for not having used packies or boats... yes, that's a given. But there was a time factor here, since I am told items decay MUCH faster now then they used to and I had spent most of that time trying to find an alternative to dropping my entire house for the sake of one lantern.

As I said, I'm not cursing the Devs or anything. UO is old and prone to the faults that old things have. My love of UO forgives all. Besides... it could have been much worse. Most of my stuff WAS moved to a friend's house for safe keeping. I only abandoned resources to chance cuz I felt I was running out of time. The lost rubble was simply overlooked - but should have been savable were it not for this bug. The other fellow who had the same issue a week later (today) lost all his Soul Stones among other things.

But a word of caution to anyone else who resizes: completely empty the house, even of stuff you don't want. It might be hiding or covering something you DO want.

I've always emptied the house. Good to find a friend to drop your stuff at before attempting to resize.

Yes I use to resize like that all the time untill they changed it without notice and I lost a bunch of
good stuff. So yes make sure you empty house before you resize!

I think they changed items getting kicked to beneath the house sign when the house falls around the time that people were complaining that gypsy camps were spawning partially in their houses.

It is one of the old bugs, nobody bothers to fix instead of bringing in stuff nobody wants.
I experience this years ago - demolished a house plot the normal way, to place a castle.
Left the former locked down chests in this house during demolishing. Since there was nothing important in and the spot was very remote, I didn' care about this too much.
Attempted castle placement, succeeded, but not exactly in the spot I wanted it.
Demolished again and placed in the proper spot (that was before immediate demolish was blocked) and found then, that the most of the chests were gone.
No longer sure, in which stage of placement they disappeared.

It does not happen always, but there seem to be conditions such like having the stuff on stairs or below the plot, which makes it happen more often.

If you need some stuff to replace what is lost contact me via ICQ or PM - I have a well filled castle on Siege (although not with the newest stuff) and may be able to help you out.

In the future and for anyone else who wants to resize a house but has limited space all you need to do it place an 18x18 somewhere making the house you want to resize decay. Move everything to the new house then use the resize command on the original house. This makes the newly resized house the primary one causing the new storage 18x18 to decay. Move everything back and demolish the 18x18. This way your stuff doesn't get deleted, decayed, or stolen. The only server this wouldn't work on easily is Atlantic due to space availability.

I think this won't work on the same account, Claudia. Placing a second house brings you into the 7 days placement block period (and it was more hardcore block than placing only one house without owning one before), and since resize placement counts also as placement, you won't be able to bring the house down again at least while owning the temporary storage lot(unless this has changed behind the scenes).

Don't listen to that 18x18 crap that's won't work!! You won't be able to resize!

Have you tried the idea.. Or are you just thinking it won't work?
I have experienced this once in the past, and I do not have any reason to try this again, so it should be considered a friendly warning to avoid an unpleasant surprise, not more.

(First two accounts are now freed from houses and frozen forever as promised after the IDOC changes.)

It's not just an 'idea' I made up and it most certainly works since I've been doing it for years. The resize command circumvents the 7 day timer if you place in the same reserved area. You can technically bounce 2 houses back and forth indefinitely once per hour until the end of UO, but that kinda defeats the purpose of having a house in the first place. It is handy when resizing to bigger houses though.

Careful with resizing more than once. If you have a house on prodo and one on Siege, you can only resize once. After you have to wait 1 week before replacing because the resize code didn't get updated when they introduced the 2nd housing on Siege.

Never happened to me i resized at least six times in a row two days ago. Of course you have the hour.timer between.

I need to test again then.
Was your resize on Siege or Prod? Mine was on Siege.
