I always wished for EA to release a true 3d UO world. They made 2 attempts at it and pulled the plug on both for reasons unknown to me. However it was probably a good thing. Today,s advances in game graphics are amazing and a few games out there are utilizing these advances, except for one thing, as far as MMOs and sandbox games out there, the mechanics and free form play do not even match UO.
With that said, I wish EA would take another look into it. Crytech, a EA partner would be a good choice to launch the next generation of UO if they choose to do so. Using cryengine 3 makes development a snap compared to the old c++ arcane programming developers have to go through to unravel each time they make a patch , update and expansions.
I have a lot of time on my hand these days, so I took a crack at cryengine 3 sdk which is free to download and use.
To learn it a bit, I decided to dig up UO's heightmap. Below I took a very small piece of it, the isle of Skara Brah. Edited it with photoshop and imported it into cryengine. Now this is just the first step. I just colored it, shaped it a bit. No textures or anything are added. I will have to go into game and screen shot to get terrain specifics.
So more or less I am doing this for kicks and learning world building and hope some day someone at EA will say, lets do this!!
