UO3d dreams with cryengine 3

I always wished for EA to release a true 3d UO world. They made 2 attempts at it and pulled the plug on both for reasons unknown to me. However it was probably a good thing. Today,s advances in game graphics are amazing and a few games out there are utilizing these advances, except for one thing, as far as MMOs and sandbox games out there, the mechanics and free form play do not even match UO.

With that said, I wish EA would take another look into it. Crytech, a EA partner would be a good choice to launch the next generation of UO if they choose to do so. Using cryengine 3 makes development a snap compared to the old c++ arcane programming developers have to go through to unravel each time they make a patch , update and expansions.

I have a lot of time on my hand these days, so I took a crack at cryengine 3 sdk which is free to download and use.

To learn it a bit, I decided to dig up UO's heightmap. Below I took a very small piece of it, the isle of Skara Brah. Edited it with photoshop and imported it into cryengine. Now this is just the first step. I just colored it, shaped it a bit. No textures or anything are added. I will have to go into game and screen shot to get terrain specifics.

So more or less I am doing this for kicks and learning world building and hope some day someone at EA will say, lets do this!!

More likely they'll continue the single player Ultima series than ever get a real client and/or a new UO.

But CryEngine is gorgeous.

Yea it is, many Korean MMOs are made with it. Right now I am looking into World builder, many game titles use it to generate a better looking heightmap for editing , then imported into cryengine. I may be able to import the whole Britainia heightmap in. I just downloaded World builder just a second ago. So in theory after watching a few videos , each area can be edited, instead of cutting pieces up editing and peicing together the land mass.

Well I took the whole world of Britainia and made 16 heightmaps. Below is the area around Yew. Size is 4096 x 4096. I started sculpting the sea bed.

Well that was ages ago, besides later on they went to UOX odyssey. Never the less EA takes us down whichever road it wants, even though it might not be the right decision, but I am not here to debate.

Anyways below is the area that hosts the court of virtue and yew prison I believe. I added wet sand, dry sand and a single grass texture for now.

True.
Shards Online has the potential to become UO 2.0.
SotA has nothing to do with UO (but corresponds to the Ultima Universe).

I´m (pre-)Alpha Testing both.

Shards has isometric view. (And is quite nice so far)
SotA is a full 3d game. (with terrible view/controls if you are used to UO)

And:

The SO devs (Citadel) claim to develop a mix of UO and NWN.

The SotA devs (Portalarioum and LB) have never claimed to develop UO 2.0.
It will be anything but clearly no UO successor.

...

SotA = spiritual successor to the Ultima SERIES (basically the next chapter, just without the name, and will be tied to the new Underworld Ascendant as well).

Shards = inspired by UO and NWN and is more along the lines of UO than SotA.

Both are very well done titles and really are different enough games to support both.

At first I was all over SotA but now after seeing shards online I'm more excited about this.
