Took a break so I'm not sure if they ever came to a conclusion about a pre-AoS / pre-trammel shard.

So eager for a thread lock... yall know the search function doesn't work.

Ah well, i'll let you have your moment since apparently yall desperately need to act important on a website.

I think it's just the fact the topic has been brought up ad nauseum over the years, despite the dev team coming out and saying that it was not going to happen, and the threads always end up degrading into "I'm right, you're wrong" flame wars about rule set preferences and always get locked. Of course having taken a break you probably had no way of knowing any of this, so don't sweat it. :D

Nothing wrong with letting people dream a little, though if it does degrade into a flaming troll fest, of course I'll have to grab another lock out of the drawer.

But yes the Devs have said No on this. The server code has been too modified to roll it all back without basically rewriting the game.

The exact moment after they shut down the 2d nonsense ..................... they will start on the "two steps forward, three steps backward" version of UO.

In short picture the UO code as a gaint bird nest of fishing line on an open real. Try to start undoing the knots and it gets worse elsewhere. Working more on it just makes things tighter and worse in other areas. Best option is to cut everything free and wrap it with a fresh line. Experience has tuaght you how to wrap it. What type of line works best and catches the most fish in your waters. Even might have figured out why the bird nest happened an have an ideal of how to avoid another.

Sadly wiping the slate clean and starting fresh will never happen. All the knock off games to UO proves that fact in .......... never mind, scratch that. To many players have grand issues with giving up their 2001 holiday gifts and other things.

I could go on about a new restricted land area with the best rules time has taught us. Characters can go their butt naked where everyone is on a even ground. Yadda Yadda...........

I believe they call it Seige Perilous. Close as you're every gonna get, if you read you'll see it answered by dev after dev after producer after producer ------- NOOO it's never gonna happen.
?

Other than the lack of insurance, Siege is not one tiny bit like classic UO.
And the lack of insurance really was not at all what made old UO classic anyway imo. The fear of losing items was a factor back then ofc but it was never a game changer. Almost nobody ever quit or threatened to quit back then over losing combat gear. And when we talk about insurance affecting UO I think we are most certainly talking about combat and the gear used for combat. Not rares or collectibles. I do not believe that people are clamoring for a classic shard because they want the scary feeling of carrying around their uninsured rares :)

i would play a classic shard if one were offered.

EA UO is supposedly too broken with the code to offer one, so your best bet would be find a good free shard that offers a more classic feel.

First problem... the answer HAS been given and it has ALWAYS been "No"

Second problem... There is simply ZERO consensus of what defines "Classic Shard". With 16 years of history, there are now so many "point of change" that everyone will have a different definition up to and including choosing one of these points, but adding in "acceptable features" from a later point.

Third problem... assuming the Second Problem is solved and a specific definition is determined and used, then calls to make changes will begin. Someone will NOT like that Skill A is better than Skill B. And exploit may be found (or rediscovered). At this point calls to "change it!" will begin and once the change starts, soon enough the "Classic Shard" is no longer a Classic Shard.

Fourth problem... If Third Problem is avoided by simply throwing the shard up and NEVER giving it any form of updates, after a likely much shorter amount of time, people will get bored/annoyed/driven off the shard and back to a shard that has some sort of official support dwindling the population down to just a few and not the supposed legions wanting to play a Classic Shard.

Yeah, honestly I have a hard time understanding why it would be fun. It was mainly fun in the past because of the novelty. I loved classic UO dearly, and those were by FAR the best days in UO, but they weren't good because of the rule set. I really don't think many people would pay to play a classic shard. PVP would really be all that shard would have, and since pvp was so imbalanced back then (all hally mage/precast all the time) and no one to pk (who would pvm on a classic shard?) would limit the fun dramatically.

If anyone thinks 5 people, at least two of which aren't coders, could recode a "Classic Shard" by hand from scratch (since we've been told by multiple devs that code prior to the move from Redwood Shores simply doesn't exist) while still supporting the normal shards with expected content, I have a bridge on Alpha Centauri-b-III to sell you.

What about making:
One Trammel shard with Trammel rules on all facets. Should there be item insurance and blessed combat stuff other than spellbooks?
One Felucca shard with Felucca rules on all facets. Should there be item insurance and blessed combat stuff other than spellbooks?

Now let players transfer to the shards but only allow them to transfer back one time and only allow them to bring what they wear, pets in stable and their bankbox. Allow them to place a small house, don't allow large houses on the shard.

Now lets see if the shards become a success

Well i would play Siege but it's hard to find people. I've heard that's because everyone is a stealther.

And there's no guarantee that a "classic" shard would be any different. One of my particular interests tho was the RP. I spent a lot of time on shame lvl 2 bridge making people pay the toll.

One idea might be to hire the dark side who already has a working server. I'm not saying whether that's a good or bad idea, but it's been done on other games.

That's an interesting concept, almost an Anti-Siege in theory.

You should look at the latest state of UO video. Mesanna (well, at least the upper half of her head thats wasn't covered behind something) dismissed even looking at things they added to the game by just calling them thieves. Wrapped up the seriousness of that interview pretty well.

I never liked the split the way it was done, I rather saw Fel shards and Trammel shards. There would still be PvP in guildwars and I'm sure the VvV could work in a way suit able for a trammel shard. The Fel shards would be much like Siege but without the limit to char slot, vendors, recall, gating in and out of dungeons and T2A and so on.

Well i wouldn't play them, but anyways...

Some good news from that video tho. I'm excited about a pet revamp. The check issue and more skill masteries should also be good.

A classic shard would be a step backwards. UO should keep going as it is. Sure some of the new content might not appeal to everyone but there have been some great additions recently and I look forward to seeing more.

I recently asked the same and was far from the first to ask, "When?" T2A's debut? (When archers were still king, come to think of it.) Prior to Trammel? Prior to Publish 16?

Even if the old code existed, even if there manpower to , then every l@m3Я would dust off the old cheat programs of the time and/or use exploits so well known. Maybe the code would be after Uzi bows were eliminated (the very reason we have "You must wait to perform another action"), but there would still be plenty of exploits that took a long time to fix, especially the house break-ins that caused many a player to quit in disgust.

And if we go back far enough, who'd want to play without skill locks (late 1999) or stat locks (mid 2003)? There's so much about the game now, from home security to managing a character, which we take for granted.
